Chapter 37

Awkward

The looks from people in the packhouse are a mix of confusion and amusement. Moon is sure that most don’t know who she is. They can probably guess after seeing her in Colin’s arms. They went up one flight of stairs to the guest rooms, and Doc found the first open door. An omega has already been there to make sure the room was clean and available for them. The omegas scurrying around the packhouse were a strange concept to Moon even after staying there once.

The omegas move through the house like ghosts most of the time, not afraid but certainly keeping out of sight and out of the way of the other higher-ranking pack members. Moon is sure she wants to change that as soon as she can. Everyone should be seen and heard, not spending their days staying out of sight.

With Moon still in his arms, Colin walked into the room, and Doctor Lewis finally chuckled. “Alpha, you can put her down now, and I’m going to ask you to give us the room.” That did have Colin growling low in protest.

He can’t tell me to leave she’s mine. Farrell protested.

Moon fidgets and wraps her arms around Colin. She had been pouting much like a child. The movement and her arms around his neck seem to break the death stare he was giving the poor Doctor.

Lewis is clearly worried about what Colin might do and knows that making the Alpha leave the room is risky. Lewis only has Moon in mind thinking she may feel better about talking to him without Colin. For a moment, Moon still seemed unsure of what was or wasn’t happening to her.

“Colin, put me down, please, and I would feel a little better being examined without you here growling every time he came near me.” Moon quietly utters in his ear. Colin shivers as her warm breath brushes his skin, and he hates that she is probably right. He would want to rip any part of Lewis off that got too close to her. The bond is growing more potent the longer he is with her. He is fighting to keep from running away with her and keep her all to himself.

If this had been a normal circumstance, they would have run off together and been tangled in each other. Happily learning everything they could about every inch of each other. This, though, is anything but typical, and Colin is having to practice more restraint than any wolf would enjoy.

Colin holds her just a little tighter before setting her on her feet, still glaring at poor Doc Lewis, who swallows hard. Still, he knows he would never get close to Moon, with Colin lurking in the room anyway.

Colin knows they are right, and he could take the moment to call Ben and find out if he spoke to his father and how moving Big Springs pack is going. Colin is going through the list of things he needs to do and people he needs to call, but his mind keeps drifting back to Moon.

Reluctantly he turns to the door. “I will be in the hall.” He practically growls out the words but leaves and even shuts the door. Moon turns to Doc, who has gone a little pale from the exchange.

Moon sits on the bed of the bland but nice little guest room. She can feel the separation from Colin in a way she never thought possible. It’s like her body is missing a piece of itself. She instantly knows that taking things slowly will be more challenging than she thought now that her wolf is far more present in her mind.

Moon is caught wondering if Kiara will stay this time or if she will fade away again and what that will mean if she does. Moon has already noticed that Kiara is struggling to keep her footing in Moon’s mind. Moon feels her less and less with the passing minutes, and once Colin leaves the room, Moon notices the change happening much faster.

Colin paces the hall for a moment, not loving being kicked out of the room. The logical side of his brain did understand it. He wanted to keep everyone from even looking at Moon, and the thought of the Doc touching her made him see red. Colin had much more sympathy for everyone who had ever felt a bond like this.

He decides it is best to distract himself, so he pulls out his phone and scrolls to Ben’s name, hitting the call button. Ben picks up on the second ring and instantly sounds like a worried parent.

“How is she? How is Moon?” Ben blurts out.

“She woke up just before we got back to Twin Falls. She seems fine, but her wolf is more present than it ever has been before.” Colin stops before elaborating further on the pain he is in just being ten feet away from her. How the hell is he ever supposed to leave her side again?

“What, she just woke up? That’s good, right that means she must be okay then?” Ben is relieved, and it sounds like he is finally relaxing.

“My doctor is looking at her now.” Colin has a hard time keeping the growl out of his tone, and he can swear he can hear the smile in Ben’s voice.

“We will be there early tomorrow; also, I called my dad. He didn’t want to say much to me over the phone or even to you. He is coming to see Moon. I think he wants to talk to you in person rather than over the phone or something. He said he can be there by the end of the week.”

Colin rubs his forehead; he hates that he has to wait for answers. Waiting and wondering what will happen next are not something Colin is good at. He takes a breath and tries to calm his emotions. That is another thing he is used to having perfect control over, but right now, every nerve feels exposed.

“Fine, I can understand him wanting to see her and talk to us in person about it, but the end of the week? What day is it anyway?” Colin just realized he has no idea what day it even is.

“Tuesday. Oh, and the mate bond gets better, but only after you well make it official.” Ben is definitely smiling on the other end of the phone now.

“Do I sound that bad?” Colin’s shoulders slump.

“Yeah. You sound pretty rough.” Ben actually snickers a bit, and Colin suppresses the annoyance. Everything is irritating at the moment. He only has one thing on his mind, and focusing on anything else is becoming impossible. At this point, Colin is sure a cold shower won’t even help much. When the door to the room opens and Doc is there, Colin ends the call with Ben.

Moon is standing behind him, and Colin feels like the air has left his lungs just looking at her. She is beautiful, and just seeing her has a calming effect on him. The corner of his mouth twitches, and she smiles at him.

“So?” Colin starts to ask.

“From what I can tell, she seems fine, but I want to see her at the clinic in the morning for some tests I can’t do here. I think today she should just get settled and take it easy.” Doc looks at Colin knowingly, and Colin actually looks uncomfortable, knowing perfectly well what Doc is implying. Moon’s eyes go wide, and she has had enough of all of this.

“Okay, I would like to go to my room now. I need a shower and a change of clothes.” Moon says, brushing past Doc and heading down the hall. Moon is done with all the awkwardness. She just wants space to figure all of this out. Her conversation with Doc had been awkward, and he was encouraging her to stay close to Colin if she thought her wolf was more present with him around. He thought Colin might be just the answer to the problem with her wolf, but Moon couldn’t tell Doc that she didn’t trust herself to rest and take it easy if she was left alone with him too long.
