Pearl

I wake up with a splitting headache. I have never been much of a drinker and I try to avoid alcohol whenever I can but last night was one of those nights where I was genuinely happy and I didn’t see anything wrong with me having a glass of wine which turned into two and then three till I stopped counting.

The bedroom door opens and Leo walks in. He has this troubled look on his face and I am wondering what is wrong.

‘Babe are you okay?’

‘Yes I am.’

He paces a little around the room.

‘No I am not. In fact I don’t want Sasha coming into this house or anywhere near us.’

I sit upright even though I could really use my head being on the pillow right now.

‘Babe what is going on?’

He opens his mouth to say something but closes it. This only happens when he is very upset.

‘Leo honestly I am having a terrible hangover, it’s unfair that I should be begging for information from you. Can you please just tell me what is going on.’

He sighs deeply.

‘I woke up and found Sasha naked in the kitchen.’

‘Excuse me?’

‘Not naked naked, she had on some nasty clothing.’

He pauses

‘You know what, I don’t want her in this house anymore.’

‘Let me talk to her and see what this is about.’

I force myself out of bed. I brush my teeth and wear a robe on top of my night dress. I am about to walk out when I turn around to face him.

‘Babe good morning.’

‘Morning.’ He complains and I just shake my head wanting to laugh at him but I don’t.

The house is awfully quiet. James usually spends nights here on weekends that he comes over to drink with Leo. We have two spare bedrooms so Sasha also spent the night. This is something that Leo and I talked about before allowing her to sleep over so this is coming off as strange.

I go to the living room and it’s quiet. The house help has already cleaned and the diffuser is making the room smell fresh. I go to the kitchen where I find Sasha on her feet, leaning against the kitchen island and drinking what smells like coffee. I take a few seconds to look at the matching lingerie that she is wearing covered with a short lace robe.

‘What the hell Sasha.’

This is the first time I am talking to her like this and I understand Leo’s anger.

‘What?’

‘What do you mean what? You are dressed like a slut and moving around my house like everything is fine. Don’t you have shame?’

She laughs.

‘Your house?’

‘Girl Leo hasn’t put a ring on it so stop giving him wifey vibes. We both know that you are just cohabiting.’

‘Does that take away the fact that he is my man and you need to respect that?’

‘You are worried your man will be moved by my body aren’t you?’

‘Are you listening to yourself Sasha? I am not worried about him being moved by your body. I am embarrassed that as my sister you can be parading yourself like this and if you can’t respect yourself for you at least do it for our sisterhood.’

‘Cousin.’

‘Huh!’

‘You are my cousin Pearl, we are in no way sisters and I will leave your boyfriend’s house and never return. I can tell that he can’t handle a real woman because just looking at small skin he has already chickened out and you think that man will stick with you through the fire?’

‘What are you talking about? I was really hoping that you wore this outfit without any ill thoughts but I guess you had other plans. I should have listened to Leo all along. You are toxic Sasha. And I have held on for so long trying to make excuses for all the things that you do but it looks like you will continue being the evil person that you are.’

‘I will leave. I will never come back here and best believe that I don’t ever want you anywhere near me. I have done so much for you Pearl, I have provided for you when your family couldn’t afford to take care of you. And now because you have found a boyfriend you want to look me in my eye and treat me like an outsider? That man won’t even marry you, when he is done using you I hope you come back to beg and I will be waiting to say I told you so. I will be waiting to watch you plead, I can’t wait for him to break your heart and no matter how long it takes I will be patient because cousin I am going to watch you crumble.’

‘You have said enough Sasha, now leave and stay away from Leo and I. And for the record, we are not perfect but we are going to have a good life together. So good you will wish it were yours.’
