I join Pearl in the living room, she looks disturbed. I heard her talking to Sasha and I would have loved to help her put her cousin in her place but I decided it was better to let her fight this fight. This was bound to happen any time soon and I am glad Pearl made the decision herself to put Sasha in her place.

‘Hey babe.’

‘Hey.’

‘Sasha just left.’ She says taking a deep breathe.

‘How do you feel?’

‘Terrible.’

‘You are only human.’

‘I can’t understand myself Leo. She said some really mean things to me and yet here I am feeling bad that we have a fall out. I wish we didn’t have to end this way you know, I genuinely love her and I have always wanted the best for her.’

‘What about her? Has she always wanted the best for you?’

She sighs deeply and I know I don’t need to ask further.

‘How about we just relax today? We forget that everyone else exists and just be happy?’

‘That sounds better.’

‘Except you need to go and bath, you smell like a bar.’

She laughs lightly and I am glad she is wearing a smile.

‘Let me make you something to eat whilst you shower.’

‘That ungrateful brat.’ I say as I park the car in Lona’s yard.

I am so angry, how can Pearl treat me like that? I have watched that girl grow there is no way she will pick a man over me.

‘You need to get over it.’ Lona says sounding like she just woke up.

‘Don’t tell me you are still sleeping, I told you I was coming.’

‘I am awake.’

‘Lona I am in your yard.’

‘Bestfriend just come in, I am awake.’

‘Whose car is this parked in your yard.’

‘I have so much to tell you, you won’t believe it.’

‘Okay I am coming in.’

I didn’t bother changing my outfit thinking she was alone at home. Last I checked Lona was as single as I was so who is this person that has come to see her this early and why didn’t she mention anything to me?

I walk into the house and hear the sound of water running.

‘In here besty.’ Lona yells.

I walk there and find her wrapped in a short robe.

‘Where are you coming from?’ She asks looking at me from head to toe

‘I should be asking you what you have been up to.’

‘I am very excited. And I know you will be excited for me too.’

‘Okay.’

‘So I met someone yesterday.’

‘You met someone yesterday and already he is sleeping in your house?’

‘I know you are judging me but I don’t care, I am in love with him. We are in love.’

‘Oh wow, if I didn’t know any better I would say this is a more studied version of Pearl. Both of you will have your hearts broken.’

‘Not me and definitely not Pearl. I used to judge her but not anymore, I think I have met the man to marry me.’

‘Oh wow. I should drink to this.’ I say getting myself a bottle of beer from her fridge.

‘Promise me you won’t be mad.’

‘Why?’

‘You know the guy.’

‘Okay.’

‘Babe we connected.’

‘Lona slow down, tell me how all this happened.’

‘So I met him at the club yesterday. At first his face looked too familiar and I was wondering where I had seen him. When he came close and talked to me it still wasn’t ringing a bell until we got talking and he told me where he works.’

I am about to ask her where he works when the gentleman walks into the room.

‘Hey beautiful.’ He says coming to kiss her lightly on the lips.

‘Hey handsome.’ She responds.

‘Meet my best friend Sasha, I told you about her last night.’

‘Oh yeah, now that I have seen her she kind of looks familiar. Which department do you work in?’

‘Compliance.’ I say swallowing hard.

‘You should come and say hi on Monday.’

‘Babe I need to go, I have to prepare for that party tonight. You are coming as my plus one right?’

‘Of course I am.’

‘Let me see you out.’

‘Don’t worry, I can do that on my own.’

‘I insist.’

He finally agrees, says his goodbyes to me and the two walk out together hand in hand. I feel tears build up in my eyes, Lona is my bestfriend. She has always known about my feelings for Gabriel. How could she do this to me? He has been my perfect man, I have done everything possible to make him recognise me and I was so close to having him to myself and then this?

The tears I have been pushing back finally fall and she chooses this same time to walk in.

‘Are you okay?’

‘I am Lona. I am.’

‘Is this about Gabriel? I thought you were just obsessing over him all these years. Is it about him?’

‘It’s not about him.’ I lie wiping the tears away.

‘But are you sure about him?’

‘I have never been surer about anything in my life, he is the man I will be doing life with. I can feel it.’

‘As long as you are happy I am happy.’

‘Thank you bestfriend.’
