55. Something's Wrong

Jack

The whole idea and planning of a meeting had been thrown off the table because Dennis had invited every Alpha to join in on a party, because of his new title.

And because I’m still alive and he probably has announced to every single person, that he has invited, that I’m a criminal, I can’t get in through my own front door without being attacked. And Doreen can’t do that so casually either as she is the supposed Luna who threatened the pack by collaborating with the hunter King.

“So, Maxwell, you take your Beta as your plus one, as Misty is pregnant and we don’t want to get her into trouble because of it. And you will keep open communications with the warriors of your pride as they stand at a safe distance from the east, to attack on my signal.” I explained and he nodded.

“I will sneak up to the back of the pack house, where I know there is a small stairs and a backdoor into the first floor’s kitchen. There, I will get the attention of Bertha’s former waitress, Cindy, and explain her what’s going on. She on her turn will enlighten the others of the situation and make sure to cause a distraction when needed.” I continued.

“Yes, but Cindy will only trust you, if you tell her this.” Bertha came closer and whispered something in my ear. “She’ll slap my face for that!” I yelled at her. “She might, but you’ve just got to deal with that.” She chuckled.

“Well, yeah… whatever.” I rolled my eyes and looked at the map again. “Then, at the right moment I will get into the room, where Dennis will probably gather up all the Alphas and make my statement. Challenging Dennis for the right of my title.” I said.

“And what do I do?” Doreen asked me.

“You stand back, together with Vic and her new mate Thor. He will let you know when you can claim your spot as Queen. And that will only be when everything is safe and secure.” I explained, dreading her reaction as I probably just hit a nerve right there…

“What? You are going to keep me away from all this? I can help! I can fight too!” She stood up from her chair and yelled as I expected she would.

“Yes, I know you can fight, you have a half ashamed leopard in this room to prove that! But even so, you haven’t ever been in a real fight and you can’t shift as fast as we can! Besides, we need you, you are the last relative alive from the royal bloodline, we can’t risk getting you killed. You are our last hope of uniting the packs. As we need all of the packs to fight together against your father and his army of hunters.” I pleaded.

“And what if my father is already there? What if that is going to be Dennis his plan? We still don’t know why Dennis would want to do that, as that is still the information we miss.” She then said, while folding her arms.

“Yes, that is true, we still miss his alibi for all of this. But even so, we know that he is planning for something big, otherwise he wouldn’t have ‘stolen’ the date of our meeting. So, all we can do is prepare for the worst.” I said and she sat down on her seat again.

She tilted her head mildly again, sunken in thoughts. Shit! She is thinking of a way to get herself out of this! I can’t have her sacrifice herself again! She is needed when everything is calm, to show everyone that she can truly shift into a bear. I have to end this meeting now, otherwise she will come up with more ideas for her to give herself a different task. A dangerous one!

“Any questions?” I asked everyone, and they all shook their head. Besides Doreen that is, but I’m not going to wait for her answer.

Doreen

I was still thinking about something to come up with, other than the plan that had been explained by Jack. What if my father is already there? Waiting for us to come in, ready to shoot everyone into oblivion?

My head was starting to hurt, by all the questions I had and all the scenarios that could be possible. I had been going through every idea I could think of, except the right one… And there was still something missing, something of which I had the feeling that I already read it somewhere…. But where??

“And the way he fucked me from behind! Wow!” Vic suddenly yelled to me.

“What?” I asked her, not really hearing what she just said.

“Where are you Doreen? I have been telling you about the best night of my life and you just stare straight through me!” Vic scolded me.

“Yeah, sorry. I’m just having a headache from all the things that could possibly be an alibi for Dennis.” I admitted and Vic sighed.

She smiled lightly and looked me in the eyes.

“What?” I asked her, but she shook her head. “Just tell me!” I yelled.

“I don’t know, it’s like only yesterday that I saw you walk into my motel, after Jack had linked me that you were coming in. And now you have changed so much already, accepting everything that came onto your path and embracing everything that you have been told. Your determination about this, is what makes you going to be the perfect Queen. I’m sure of it!” She smiled.

I blushed by her statement, not knowing what to respond to that.

“But we still have something to do, before I can be a Queen. Do you trust me?” I asked her.

“No.” She replied without hesitation, at which I furrowed my brows. “We are going to fight, aren’t we?” She asked me with a sigh.

I have been training non-stop, for the past few days, and now we were getting ready to leave Maxwell’s pack, on our way home.

But this wasn’t an ordinary ride home, our destination was going to be chaotic, bloody and probably brutal. Yet, we needed to make sure that when a fight would start, that we did it while killing the least amount of pack members. They are still a great part of the life of Jack, and thus also of mine. We just needed to find a way to get Dennis secluded, and to get every pack member that we could put our hands on, out of the packhouse.

We drove away with plenty of cars and small trucks that were loaded with tigers, leopards and a few bears. It took us a few hours of our time to reach the outer lines of Jack’s pack, my pack, and there we stopped. In the distance we saw Maxwell’s car drive by, where he and his Beta were in, getting to the pack house straight away. But we couldn’t do the same. We had to shift, or walk in human form, through the forests, to get closer undetected.

And as we suspected, there were no bears at the borders of the pack, as Dennis was keeping them close by to keep himself guarded. The lousy coward wanted to keep himself secure, surrounding himself with others, because he knew he couldn’t beat Jack on his own.

I went step by step, going through all the things I could remember from all the books that I have read. From all the shifter wars, to their customs and behaviour, to the bloodlines and heritages and what not more. But I couldn’t remember what I had read already, that I wanted to know so desperately.

“Are you alright?” Jack suddenly whispered to me.

“Yes, just a bit anxious.” I replied while carefully stepping over some fallen tree branches.

“It’s okay to be afraid to fight, should it be necessary.” He said.

“Oh, but I’m not afraid of that. I’m just worried that whatever we don’t know about Dennis, is going to be something bigger than we could have imagined on our own.” I explained and he nodded.

Heads up! This is a new person!

Justin

I was hardly able to succeed at my father’s wishes, but it was always just enough to make him happy. He always looked at me like I had been something disgusting, ugly and foul. Like I had been the most despicable creature that he had seen in all of his life. I probably was now, but it hasn’t been like this in the beginning, not until I had turned six.

My life had been with more downs than ups, but still it didn’t make me fall down my place. My father always urged me on to heighten my agility and strength, and I was glad to succeed in everything that he wanted me to do, so far. But he always told me to never show my true self, as that would take over my human brain. And it had been difficult not to, as my mind had been practically forcing me to shift into this primal creature a few times over. But I knew I shouldn’t comply to my mind’s wishes, as bad things would happen then. Just like that one time…

“You ready, my boy? This is the day that I have been waiting for, for a long time! Get ready to fight, Justin.” My father said with a grin and I sighed.

I guess this was going to be one of his more difficult missions, because every time he would need me for one of his assassinations, it would only be because his hunters couldn’t succeed in it. He knew that I could kill without using much of my strength, so he used me whenever it was necessary in his eyes. Of course, it would never be without any danger, but he didn’t care, he knew that I would do anything for him, for the slightest moment of approval.

Besides, I might look like a twenty-year-old, with my height, muscles and tattoos, but in fact I’m only turning sixteen by the end of this month, so I needed him. I can’t turn my back on someone that took care of my life, ever since my mother had given up on me. He was the only one that fed me, clothed me, trained me and what not more. A few years ago, he even gave me my own room, with the newest game consoles and everything I could ever wish for. So, working for him, for a mission here or there, wasn’t something that I could decline on, easily. Even though I just wanted to be able to have a normal conversation with my father, instead of all the training, fighting and killing, that I had to face.

“You know the drill, right?” He asked me when I had come downstairs, to the armory he had built in the basement.

“Yes, don’t give in to my mind’s wishes, otherwise I will turn into a mindless creature.” I said completely bored.

“Don’t use that tone to me, boy!” He scolded me and slapped me across the face. It didn’t hurt me at all, but the fact that he did that, made me aware that he was pretty angry. And the fact that he is the King of all the hunters, gave him the right to demand respect from all of the people around him.

“Sorry father, you know I won’t let myself be taken over, to become just like all those other creatures that I have killed already.” I told him and he smiled.

“Yes, you are right. I haven’t been training you to give in to becoming something like that!” He said to me, like he had done to me for over a million times already.

I hated those stinking mutts, while they are living across this planet, all carefree! And because I am one, just like them, I partially hated myself too. Which, I guess, is the reason that my father never showed me any love either. My mother had been defiling me with this curse that I have, this curse of becoming a rabid beast, should I ever give in to my anger. But I wasn’t going to give in to it, and I was going to make sure that there weren’t many of the same creatures alive to continue to spread this… disease!
