Memories That Holds Us Together

Amy's POV

We started to walk towards the back side of the house we were in. After saying goodbye to my mom we were on our own. First, it was a little awkward between us cause it was almost months I didn’t see him and he was obviously angry at me for leaving his house without any notice.

“So how are you?” The question halted my walk and I turned around. I thought I’d see him avoiding my eyes like he usually did before but this time he held his eye contact. I missed seeing his golden eyes. I didn’t know what to say. Was I OK? I was still trying to process what has happened in these months without him. We both stood there looking at each other like that’ll answer our question.

“I’m not OK, that's sure. But I'll be fine. Now let’s just find something.” I can’t help but avoid looking at him. What happened to us? We used to at least talk without this awkwardness between us. Yeah, insults and hateful cusses were thrown around a lot but this...I don't like this wall between us. Glancing at him again I noticed that he was battling with himself.

“OK...but after that you’re telling me why you ran away from my house without telling me.” He looked at me concerned and I nodded, wanting to start walking already. But can I really trust him again? He has helped me before that for sure. But that time his sister was in line but this time? Why he’ll lose his life for someone like me who he’ll have to kill eventually?

“Are you alright? We can stop and take a breath if you like?" Out of nowhere he stopped and turned towards me.

"No, it's fine. The faster we can find something the better." I was already walking ahead when I was stopped by a grip on my arm.

"Can we talk?" Danny asked quietly and I nodded. I was afraid to look at him. To see the disappointment in his eyes. He told me to stay. He begged me.

I didn't listen...

"Amy, what happened to you?" The intensity of his question left me more damaged than I ever thought.

What happened to me?

"You were a wild girl. Even in an asylum, you didn't take crap from anyone. You yelled, screamed but now...you won't say a word. Hell, you can't even look at me!" He took a hold of my chin and made me look at his freaking hazel eyes. "What happened to us?"

“There wasn't an us,” With one sentence I ruined everything. My eyes widened hearing my own voice and at that moment I did a mistake to look at Danny.

His stare intensified but the hope in his eyes completely died. His eyes were empty like I saw mine in the mirror for the past couple of months. I hated it. I hated to see him like this. But then again, we can never work.

"Danny-"

"Stop." He cut me off with a cold tone. I would never forget the look he gave me. "Please just stop. I understand. We need to leave soon."

With that, he started to walk ahead without waiting for me. I also join him but the cold tone in his voice haunted me all the way I walked. Did he understand the despair in my voice? Did he understand that I wanted to be with him badly?

I didn't think so.

There weren’t too many people I’ve seen today and it couldn’t be just luck. Suddenly my body stopped functioning. There, just a little ahead was a one-story house and if I’m right all the chattering were coming from that room. I didn’t want to go farther but what was my other option?

“You stay here; I’ll check that place out.” He said and tried to walk but I also knew it was suicide. You don’t get to want the wrong side of Sage. If provoked he could call his big bad minions which will kill us instantly even before we can take a blink. Before he could kill both of us I halted Danny by grabbing his arm from behind.

“Just go together OK? We don’t need the same thing that happened to us before.” I reminded him the cruelty that we faced before and we both visibly flinched.

Flashbacks

It was the day we were going to leave that hellhole known as the asylum. We already had everything planned out. Danny and I hadn’t talked about our situation as to where we stand now. In fact, he only talked to me when that was needed. Other than that we were nothing but strangers. We knew the asylum like the back of our hands. We knew where every nurse, doctors, guards work, what time, everything.

We were extra conscious today as there were some rumors going on like some girl has been killed. Danny came at extract 11 with some knives and we had our little precaution like Iva had a pocket knife and spoon. I took some nurses soul before to decrease the number and increase my strength.

Before I could walk out of the door deadly feelings crushed down on me. All the pain, sufferings this place has given me made me turn around and look into the mirror. I’m not the same girl that came here. The girl staring at me was someone else and this was all their fault. I have to make a threat to them. At least they deserved some threat from me cause if I find a chance I’ll destroy their roots. Danny glanced at my side but said nothing. After he left, I started to curve the words in my blood. When all the walls were painted in my blood, being satisfied, I waited for Iva and Danny to return.

All the while I was pacing and when I saw that both of them were almost outside I turned left and froze. There were at least 50 guards trying to catch us. We were going to die...Iva was already outside of the asylum via the small tunnel that can take us outside. We discovered this only spot a few days ago. But if I or Danny tried to run we were going to give ourselves to them. Dammit! That wasn’t supposed to happen! Closing my eyes and taking a deep breath I looked at him and he had the same idea. We had to take right and take the stairs. I needed to stay strong. I opened my eyes and together we ran. They were coming closure but we were already up in a desolate room.

He said nothing at first. I looked at him to see he was already looking at me.

“You know...you could’ve run after your sister. Why didn’t you?” It was eating me alive to know that he could save his ass if he wanted to. Yes...that would mean I was going to suffer but why didn’t he?

We stood there together for a long time. I waited for him to say something. A word. Yelling at me like other times. But nothing. I took a deep breath and pulled away from him. Maybe it’s best if I keep my mouth shut. He didn’t want anything to do with me.

“I couldn’t. Heck! I tried but I couldn’t! I couldn’t bring myself to hurt you! I’m sorry...I should’ve been more careful and we could’ve out of the asylum by now.” He was ranting but I knew just then he cared. Hate me or not he cared enough to save me. But he suddenly stood up and looked at me like its hurt for him to see me or something like that.

"I'm going to try something. Don't stop me, please." It was the first time he has said something gently. He took my hands to him and looked at my eyes for permission. As soon as I nodded he kissed me. His lips were the same I tasted when we last kissed. And this time I kissed him back. It was a needed kiss. We could get caught heck! We could be even dead. He was sacred. He was scared he couldn’t save me as he promised.

Before I could reassure him the guards began to move in our direction. His grip tightening around my hand he said, "Come and don’t let go of me.” I nodded and he pulled me with him. We hightailed it down the opposite direction. We picked up the speed as we went. And by the time we were at the bottom of another set of doors we halted. He started down the basement.

“Wait here. I’m going to check to make sure we won’t get caught.” I nodded again. Where were my powers when I needed them? I waited for him to return but to my horror I blinked, trying to take in what I was seeing. My mind was reeling with panic. This can’t be happening, how is this happening!?

There was a girl maybe a little older than me storming in my direction but she was obviously dead. Her eyes didn’t hold any life. She looked at me and pointed at the close door. She was a guardian spirit. She wasn’t here to hurt us. I took a breath of relief. And that’s when the angry guards appeared around the corner. I scrambled out the door looking frantic not knowing where to go. When I stood there frozen he shoved me behind him and yelled, “Move!”

They were going to catch us. I was only going to be a burden. So I ignored his yelling to walk towards the guards running at me.

"Amy, what the fuck are you doing!? Come back!" I heard Danny's voice shook as I was almost near them. Looking back, I wasn't ready to see the look on his face.

"Trust me, Amy. Please stay." He begged, staring at me dead in the eye. All I had to say was yes and we would run together. But I knew my track records of losing people. If I let him in, he would be dead too. And I can't do that to him.

My voice broke when I shook my head. "I can't."

But even before he could do something the dead girl pushed him to the room again and this time I ran. I knew what I had to do. I had to do the unthinkable to make this escape. I knew as our plan, if we could escape we’ll be going to Danny’s home. Danny was safe. I knew it. That spirit was meant to be protecting him but I had to protect myself. Looking for something or anything I took notice of the drums of gasoline lining up in a corner.

Taking a deep breath I opened all the cans and started to pour the liquid into the ground. The people living in here was not on this side of the asylum. If people will get hurt it’ll only be the guards. With the last look at the asylum, I started the fire. I ran away from that awful screams that’ll belong to the crowds. But the worst part? I didn’t care. Survival instincts had made me numb. in the end, I’ve destroyed their roots after all. I knew I may never see him again. But he’ll look for me; I knew it by the heart.

Whatever it takes.

Present

“I remember how you ran away. It was my fault though.” He frowned at the memory. I never knew how he survived but it wasn’t the right time. As if reading my mind without saying anything he started to walk towards the house.

Joining him I tried to peer through the small window and my jaw dropped at the sight in front of me. Sage and his minions were getting ready for something big but Danny’s eyes were glued to Sage.

“Hey, are you OK?” I poked him so his trance could break.

“Is that-” He stopped breathing heavily so I tried to give him the details as he knew none of them.

“That’s Sage. He’s the one who-” But my words dried down as his next words made their way in my ears.

“He’s a Seeker. Just like me.”
