Twisted Ties of Love
Chapter 255

No doubt, Brett had a handsome face, with deep eyes that upturned at the corners. When he gazed at you, it was easy to fall for the illusion that he was madly in love with you.

Despite having a flirtatious face, his lips were thin, and she once saw this type of lip shape online, saying that people with such lips were naturally fickle and unloyal, even able to turn their hearts away from their loved ones.

When she told him that he looked best in a white shirt, Brett's hand holding the newspaper shrank a bit, "I look even better in a white shirt?"

Izabella nodded in affirmation.

He smiled slightly, "Then I'll only wear white shirts from now on."

Brett had many custom-tailored shirts, with more of them being darker colors, which he preferred more. But when Izabella mentioned how good he looked in white, he couldn't help but think back to when he first met Ryker, who always wore white clothes.

After breakfast, Izabella found the pet backpack, and as soon as she unzipped it, Niki curiously crawled in. Izabella seized the opportunity to close the zipper immediately.

At first, Niki was not used to the pet backpack, and meowed uncontrollably. It wasn't until Izabella opened the side zipper and gave it some cat treats that it gradually calmed down.

"I'll carry it," Brett offered, as the once small kitten had grown quite a bit in over forty days.

"You sure?" Izabella looked at him skeptically.

Brett simply reached out and took the pet backpack from her while she giggled at the sight of him carrying the cat, which seemed quite mismatching. She happily followed his pace. Brett walked ahead and, without even looking back, effortlessly took Izabella's hand as they went downstairs.

The two went to the Windham Group together, and Izabella noticed that the female employees' outfits had changed significantly. They all wore long clothes, and the occasional pencil skirt was knee-length.

At the reception desk, Izabella saw Janet, who also looked more conservative and wore less makeup. Janet glanced at her and then quickly lowered her head, as if unwilling to make eye contact. Izabella only gave her a brief look before following Brett into the private elevator. His office was huge, with a separate resting area for sleeping and even a partitioned space for bathing and grooming, probably prepared for his overtime work.

While Brett was working outside, Izabella stayed indoors watching TV and petting the cat. She was also brought fruit, nuts, and juice from the secretary.

She tried her best to keep a low profile, refraining from disturbing his work unless he called her.

However, she could still hear his conversations even with the partitions, including discussions of company secrets.

Izabella felt a dry throat, her stomach issues and throat inflammation seemed to be getting worse, her throat felt like it was on fire. Not wanting to bother others, she got up and went out with a cup.

Liam was discussing the minerals under Starry Brilliance Island with Brett, an essential factor in conquering the local market in J City. They were considering which area to allocate the minerals, but once they had them, it wouldn't be hard to find partners.

"President Windham, I think we should go for area C..." Liam was still talking when he heard a commotion behind him. Izabella came out with a cup, and he eyed her warily. The atmosphere became tense, almost awkward.

"Come here," Brett called her over.

Izabella obediently walked over, "Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt your talk. I'm a little thirsty and wanted to drink some water. I'll leave in a bit."

"No need, you can stay here." There happened to be a cup of water on Brett's desk, just the right temperature. When he heard she was thirsty, he immediately handed her the water.

Izabella took several sips, but the dryness in her throat lingered.

"Niki is still inside, I'll go back first."

Brett didn't stop her.

Liam watched as Izabella went back inside, unsure of how to continue. In a low voice, he said, "President Windham, why did you bring your wife in again?"

"What do you mean 'again'?" If he could, he would bind Izabella to himself, so they could always be together.

Liam pursed his lips for a long moment, "President Windham, we're talking about confidential matters here. Maybe we should go somewhere else."

"You talk too much today; just spit it out."

His attitude seemed to show no concern about company secrets getting leaked. In reality, even if these secrets were revealed in front of Izabella in her current state, she wouldn't understand any of it. But just in case, what if her memory came back?

Liam was well aware of how much Izabella had hated Brett before. If her memory suddenly returned, she could use these secrets to take revenge on Brett.

It was better to be safe than sorry. Izabella was like a ticking time bomb.

Yet Brett didn't seem to care at all, allowing Liam to reveal everything in front of Izabella.

It was May 21st, and Izabella was unaware of the significance of this day. In the early hours, she woke up feeling a chill around her wrist. She opened her eyes to find an exquisite bracelet on her wrist. The bracelet had a simple design with diamonds embedded in it. The most eye-catching part was a small lock.

She lifted her wrist, and the diamonds on the bracelet sparkled under the light.

"What is this?"

"Your birthday present." This unique bracelet was designed and crafted in about a month.

The bracelet's length was just right, simple and elegant, perfectly suiting Izabella's taste.

Brett held her slender white wrist, "Do you like it?"

Izabella didn't react for a while, "Today is my birthday?"

"Yes, May 21st is your birthday."

Izabella was still a bit puzzled, somehow feeling familiar with the date but also a bit resistant. However, she was pretty stoked that Brett remembered her birthday and had already prepared a birthday gift for her.

Despite her lack of nails, the bracelet looked amazing on Izabella's wrist, making her hand look even more slender, fair, and elegant.

"I like it," she said softly, looking at her ugly fingertips.

Brett caught her gaze, reached out, and held her hand, fingers intertwined. "It looks great."

Izabella wasn't as bothered by her fingertips as before. She recently bought a ton of nail stickers online that looked just like the real thing and were pretty cute.

"Go on a date with me tomorrow?"

Izabella agreed without a second thought.

Brett planned their day. They went to an amusement park and bought loads of tasty treats. Brett even bought her a strawberry cake.

Izabella worried it'd be too sticky, so she kept the cake in its box.

She wore a red ankle-length dress, her hair tied back. Izabella also put on some light makeup for the date, looking so radiant and stunning it was hard for people to look away from her. People often took pictures when they walked on the street, but Brett forcibly stopped them and demanded the photos be deleted.

After putting on makeup, Izabella's complexion had improved, and under the sun, you could see the fine fuzz on her face, although her neck veins were more visible.

The couple steered clear of thrilling rides at the amusement park. One reason was Izabella's dress, and the other was her not-so-great mental state.

They stuck to simple attractions but still spent quite a bit of time before heading to a specific restaurant for dinner.

They were like a normal couple. After lunch, they went to see a movie. While watching, Izabella couldn't help but unwrap the cake box.

Not paying much attention to the movie, Izabella got distracted by the cake in her hand. Suddenly she felt itchiness all over and wanted to scratch, but her hand was sticky. "I need to go to the bathroom," she whispered in Brett's ear.

"I'll go with you."

The movie theater was dim, and they had to climb stairs as they were sitting in the back row. Worried Izabella might fall, Brett held her hand tightly.

Brett waited outside the restroom, holding Izabella's unfinished cake.

Once inside, Izabella washed her hands with soap and started to scratch. The itching began on her back then spread to her hands and neck.

She looked at the rash on her hands and felt a sudden tightness in her chest. She leaned against the wall, with her hand on the sink, but she still couldn't support herself.

In just a short time, she started to feel feverish and nauseous.

The symptoms pointed to an allergic reaction. All the food she'd eaten that day was stuff she usually ate, except for the cake.

Was she allergic to strawberries?

A vague image flashed in her mind, she tried to focus on details but couldn't. A sharp pain followed in her head.

The pain wasn't something too extreme, but the lingering discomfort felt like her brain was slowly filled with something.

Hand on her head, the other on the sink, Izabella turned on the faucet, the sound of the water flowing.

She involuntarily retched, blood spewing from her throat. Her mouth was filled with various tastes, but it eventually ended with a fishy sweetness. Someone walked in to touch up their makeup and saw Izabella leaning against the wall, as pale as a ghost, and asked, "Are you alright?"

As soon as the words left her mouth, Izabella collapsed onto the floor.

The woman, horrified at the sight of blood coming from Izabella's mouth, screamed in panic. Brett was waiting outside for Izabella, five minutes had passed, but she hadn't come out yet. Women usually take longer in the bathroom, but not so long without a single stir.
