Twisted Ties of Love
Chapter 169

Izabella was running low on money, and Amelia asked her, "Do you want to see him after his surgery?"

Izabella said, "Nah, I better not." Lucas probably didn't want to see her right now.

She didn't want to upset him when he was at his most vulnerable after surgery.

Izabella said, "Just help me find him a careful caretaker. As for the medical bills, I won't pay for him if he has money on him." Lucas had just gotten ten million from Heckter last week, so he probably hadn't spent it all yet.

Izabella said, "If he doesn't have money, give me a call."

Amelia nodded and asked with concern, "Are you feeling better now?"

Izabella said, "Hmm, thank you, Amelia." If it wasn't for Amelia, she might have gotten stuck in a dead-end this time.

Izabella glanced at her medical report again and put it back in the file bag, "I'll leave this with you for now. I'll head home." Amelia said, "Get some rest. The trial starts the day after tomorrow. Be in good spirits and don't let Brett underestimate you."

Carrying a bag of medicine, Izabella deviated from her direct path home and made her way to the end of the hallway. There, a wide window stood open, inviting her gaze towards the towering buildings outside. Perched on the fifth floor of the hospital, the autumn wind carried a distinct chill, noticeable even from within. The brisk breeze gently caressed her face, causing her pores to contract. A shiver ran down Izabella's spine, momentarily jolting her awake from her reverie.

She took out her phone from her bag and called Brett.

She was so familiar with Brett's phone number that she didn't even need to search for it. Looking at the familiar number, Izabella pursed her lips and hesitated before pressing it.

The call went through, and after five rings, the other side leisurely picked up.

"The trial starts the day after tomorrow, and you're calling me now. If you're withdrawing the lawsuit, I'll pretend nothing happened and treat you well like before," Brett said confidently over the phone. Izabella's grip tightened around her phone as she unconsciously retorted, her tone laced with sarcasm, "Oh, just like before? Slapping me in the face, or treating me like a lover at night and then expecting me to serve you like a maid during the day?"

Brett was taken aback, his expression betraying his astonishment. After a prolonged silence, he finally mustered a response, "Izabella, I genuinely saw you as my wife, you know. Don't be ungrateful." Izabella's eyes brimmed with heavy sarcasm as she scoffed, "Well, why don't you just make Kaley your wife then?" Her question carried the weight of accusation, as she continued, "Was it you who severed Lucas' hand?"

Brett remained silent, but Izabella interpreted his lack of response as an admission of guilt. Within her heart, she held a scale, and every misfortune that befell those around her seemed to confirm Brett's culpability.

"I greatly underestimated the depths to which you would sink, Brett," Izabella remarked with a mixture of disappointment and disgust. "You're willing to do anything to manipulate me, but you've completely misunderstood. I already told you that Lucas and I have nothing between us. Even if you took his life, I would never turn back to you." With resolve, Izabella placed her phone down, fixed her gaze on the call duration displayed on the screen, and swore to herself, "I am absolutely getting this divorce!"

With that, she hung up the call, straightened her expression, and went back to the elevator. The elevator doors were reflective, and Izabella looked at her pale reflection in the mirror. She didn't know if it was because of the cold wind or her emotional ups and downs, but her head started to ache.

Brett was sitting in the chair, looking exceptionally annoyed. A wave of anger surged up in his heart. He casually threw his phone onto the table, a light motion that made a loud noise.

Liam brought some documents to the president's office and heard a sentence from inside.

"I don't know what nonsense she's talking about. Stupid and gutsy!"

Liam was quite frightened, sensing that Brett was in a terrible mood now, and thought he should avoid him.

Just as he was about to sneak away and pretend nothing had happened, Brett's voice suddenly came from behind him.

"Bring the documents over."

Liam went over and put the documents on the table, not knowing whether to stay or leave.

Brett's expression was still awful, and as he flipped through a few pages of the documents, his displeasure only grew. He threw them on the floor and shouted, "Have them redo it!" These days, Brett's terrible mood had been making everyone in the company miserable.

"Yes, I'll arrange it right away." Liam picked up the "pile of waste paper" from the floor but was suddenly stopped by Brett.

"Did you know that Izabella's brother Lucas had his hand cut off?"

Liam was taken aback, "What? How did that happen?"

"Izabella just called me, and she thinks I cut off her brother's hand."

Now Liam understood why Brett was in such a bad mood - he was being falsely accused by Izabella.

But it wasn't her fault for accusing him because he'd done those things and said those words before. Didn't he know that?

"Isn't this because of all the things you've done before? You're the one who's wrongly accused her," Liam muttered.

Brett heard him and frowned, "Are you speaking up for her?"
