Ivar

I led my mate through the old stone walls of the basement. She had mentioned more than once that I lived in a castle, but most of the rooms inside had been renovated to feel more “homey” as Trinity had put it. Down here though, it definitely looked like a medieval fortress. The old torch posts on the wall certainly didn’t help.

“Are you locking me in the dungeon?” Sam asked as I guided her. “If you want to get freaky, that’s fine, but this is a little ominous.”

I chuckled.

“No. I thought you wanted in on the big secret,” I said.

“I do,” she responded quickly. “I thought it would be more along the lines of a spill-sesh rather than show and tell.”

“Spill-sesh?” I asked, amused.

“Like just telling me,” she explained.

“Right,” I laughed. “It’s just easier to show you.”

Our feet tapped along the old stone floor as we passed computer monitors and then the weapons room. Finally, we came to the metal door and keypad. I scanned my thumb print and a buzz sounded as the latch opened.

We walked into the room where the metal gate stood. I looked over to find Sam’s brow furrowed.

“What are you keeping locked up?” She asked.

“Locked out,” I corrected her.

She looked at me with her head tilted waiting for an explanation.

“When it was clear Tatiana was on the losing side of things, she opened a portal,” I explained.

“A portal?” Sam shook her head in disbelief. “To where?”

“To be honest, we don’t really know. It could be another planet or another dimension. We haven’t quite been able to figure it out.”

“Okay,” she said, slowly. “But you’ve been there?”

“Sort of. Each side has a setup similar to this.” I gestured around the room. “They’ve never been past that door and we’ve never been past theirs.”

“Who’s there?”

I stayed quiet for a moment, finding it hard to explain.

“From the beings that we’ve met, it seems like they are all dark magic based species. We’ve met elves who seem to be the equivalent of dark witches as well as centaurs. They speak of others, but we haven’t met them.

“To be fair, we’ve led them to believe our world is filled with creatures as powerful and long living as myself, Trinity, and the immortal werewolves who live here. They could be bluffing as well.”

“Why lie to them?” She asked.

“Tatiana promised them dominion over our world. She wanted them to help her eliminate the light species and told them it would be an easy task. It was Trinity and I who changed their minds,” I told her, remembering the war.

“So you made them back down,” Sam reiterated. “Why is the gate still here? And why is it such a secret?”

“We haven’t found a way to close the portal, so we added the gate for protection. We don’t trust the beings on the other side and they certainly don’t trust us. Every now and then, a creature somehow ends up on the wrong side and it always ends in talks of war. We aren’t sure how it happens.”

She nodded.

“And if Tatiana were able to get access to the portal she could open the way for soldiers to flood through,” she reasoned.

“Tatiana or any creature wanting to create chaos,” I clarified.

“That’s how you hold the balance,” Sam realized. “You protect the gate.”
