HIS ENDING

“Kobus, am I a bad person?”, he asks his all-time best friend, his eyes never leaving the flames.

“Lucius, we are all bad people at some point”, Kobus answers, "but no, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to see people who do wrong pay for their sins”.

He sits down in the maroon chair, a small table sits between him and Kobus as they both sip from the glasses enjoying the moments.

Lucius stares off into the fire, thinking about everything that has transpired and has led to this moment, “you know Kobus, the reason I could never look you in the eyes was that”, he says turning to the male whose vivid purple eyes stare back at him, "they always found a way to change my mind but unfortunately this time it’s too late”.

He finishes the sentence as he watches the purple eyes get watery, and Kobus looks at him in confusion before he hisses and clutches his chest tightly in pain.

Lucius turns back to the flames, ignoring the way his friend’s body hits the floor with a thud, ignoring the constant weaving and heaving as Kobus tries to catch his breath.

“This reminds me of this little bird I met this other morning, such a sweet thing. It had a broken wing and its leg was all mangled and infected. The poor thing didn’t have a chance in the real world and I fell for it because I can bet you I’m not the first person to see its pain but I was the only one to put it out of its misery,” he says taking the last sip from the glass.

The taste of bourbon is strong and sweet but tinged with sourness at the same time.

“But then again if I had just nurtured it back to health, it would have been just fine. I guess I had my reasons, what were yours?”.

He says placing the glass back on the table and watching how his friend mouths the words to help him over and over. Lucius only stared at him, the thoughts of his mother now before him clearly, how she must have been in pain, how she must have begged for help knowing that she was dying.

He turns back to the flames, "And you’re right. I’m not a bad person, I just like to see justice served and I could do that better now, after all, I am King”.
