Before I learned to wield a sword, the sight of blood filled me with revulsion. It stained the polished steel, a grim reminder of the violence it accompanied, and seemed to pulse ominously even in the darkness.

Now, as I beheld Henrietta, blood-soaked and trembling, I felt a different kind of dread settle over me.

The air cra ckled with tension as I surveyed the aftermath of the battle, the scent of blood and ash hanging heavy in the air. Moonlight filtered through the stained-glass windows, casting eerie shadows across the chamber’s marble floor.

In a matter of seconds, I subdued the two other vampires who were attacking Aran and Aiden. Snapping their necks, I let them fall to the floor and immediately went to Henrietta, who was huddled in the corner, trembling. In the dim light, I could see the flicker of consciousness in Henrietta’s eyes, a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos.

I looked at the vampire. The piece of wood on its heart was enough to take the vampire’s life. Its face started to pale and then started to burn on itself until he was nothing but a pile of ash. As if on cue, Dreyfus arrived, seeing the whole mess.

“Is he… dead?” he asked, his voice grave. “Did you kill him? You promised there would be no deaths.”

“It was not me,” I answered and looked at Henrietta who was trembling in the corner. Her handmaiden was on the floor across from her, her limbs dislocated and broken. But she was healing faster than Henrietta was. Understanding then hit Dreyfus’ features as he beheld the handmaiden brutally injured.

I

“Henrietta,” I murmured, drawing her attention. She looked at me, her eyes clouded with pain and exhaustion. Blood stained her dress, a stark contrast against her pallid complexion.

As realization struck, I knew her wounds were grave, capable of claiming even a half-werewolf’s life.

She tried to reach me but her hands were too weak.

At that moment of clarity, I knew what it meant. She may have not been bitten but her wounds were grave enough to take a half-werewolf’s life.

“What’s happening to her?” grunted Aiden as he woke up from being unconscious. But when he turned to look at

me, his eyes widened at what I was about to do. At that moment, I couldn’t care less about my surroundings. I lost care about everything. At that moment, I only wanted to cure Henrietta and relieve her from the pain she

was suffering.

Without hesitation, I sunk my teeth into my wrist and made Henrietta drink from it. Under my breath, I kept on mumbling–praying she drinks it. Otherwise, I don’t know any other way to save her.

The warmth of her mouth closed in on my wound and she started drinking from it like it was her last meal. She took big gulps and I sighed as I saw how her wounds started to heal faster than earlier.

When she’s had her fill, she pulled away, her eyes closed as she savored my blood. I watched in relief as I sat on the floor, sighing. Blood still covered her torso and I know it was a mixture of her blood and of the vampire she just killed. I could smell it on her. However, for some reason, I could smell something else.

She was panting as she sat on the floor. Blood–my blood–stained the corners of her mouth. Then she let out a deep breath, exposing her fangs.

The relief in me disappeared.

Her hands started to move to her neck, down her body and I instantly knew the aphrodisiac effects of my blood were starting to affect her.

I grabbed her hand to stop her from it but then she opened her eyes and I froze.

There was lust on her face, the need, the hunger, and the desperation were all there in her eyes. And yet the color of her eyes and the sight of her fangs proved that something had changed in her.

Without hesitating, I made her sleep just so nobody else would see her in that state. She fell into my arms, and I gently laid her on the floor.

Wordlessly, I went over to where Niana was. The majority of her injuries were already healed. With her being a pureblood, injuries like this won’t last. However, she also saw something that she should not have seen.

“What did you just do?” Dreyfus asked. “You…Only special vampires can do what you just did.”

The whole room was silent. My back was on them, and Niana was looking at me in wonder as well. There was no point hiding the truth from them now. I did not intend to keep this a secret for long. After what they did to help me tonight, I know I could trust Aran and Dreyfus.

I gave Dreyfus a look before I crouched in front of Niana, letting them see what I was about to do.

“Look into my eyes,” I ordered and she followed. “You have not seen what transpired in this room tonight. You came here and found there are thieves but they managed to escape through the window, hence why they were

broken.”

Niana stared blankly at me and nodded, repeating my words under her breath.

It was then that I faced them, their surprise was even more evident now as they stared at me.

“You-” Dreyfus stammered, couldn’t seem to find the words to say. I sighed.

“We have more pressing matters to deal with tonight,” I said.

Aiden stepped forward. “We’re going to capture the ones who escaped,” he announced and I went to where

Henrietta was.

“Bring all of them to the catacombs.” I carried her into my arms and faced them again. “I will explain everything later. For now, those vampires are disguising themselves as the Royal Guards. Capture them before they find. another victim and before Philip gets to them.”

Even as they were confused, Dreyfus and Aran nodded, their eyes filled with determination.

And then the next moment, the three of them were gone, bringing with them the vampires we defeated in

Henrietta’s chamber.

I stared at Henrietta who was peacefully sleeping. However, there is another storm in me that needs to be

answered as well.

When she opened her eyes earlier, they were of a different color. It is natural for vampires and wolves to have changing eye color. Wolves have a distinct eye color and I was certain that what I saw earlier was not supposed to be the color of her eyes.

However, I decided to set it aside first and went to where the handmaiden was.

Niana still looked like she was in a trance- still under the influence of my compulsion.

I crouched in front of her. “You can go back to your quarters.”

She nodded blankly and stood, walking towards the door until it was just me and Henrietta left. I locked the doors and took a deep breath, trying to process what had happened so far.

Henrietta drank my blood twice before and this has never happened. What changed?

Why did she have fangs and the eye color of a vampire like me?
