Tracker

Zack found Colin’s clothes by a tree, and from there, it was easy for the wolves to track him, fanning out into the trees and making a wide line of wolves. As they ran, they linked one another from time to time, following the path colin took. Zach was in the lead only slightly. He is the pack’s best tracker, and Chris knows if anyone can find Colin, it’s Zach.

Jess links the group, I found Billy, and he’s dead. I can’t see Jessie.

Keep a sharp eye out. Chris says to the group.

There. Zach says as he stops and looks at the ground, his wolf sniffing the air. He was right here, and he fell here. A men walked up from that direction. Zach snaps his head in the direction he sees tracks from. As the other wolves fan out, circling as they search, Chris heads that way.

Zach joins Chris. One was up this tree for sure. Zack links Chris looking at the deep scuffs and gouges in the tree.

Can you follow Colin’s sent past here? Chris asks Zack.

I’ll try, but I think they masked his sent with something. It’s making it hard to find. I’ll keep trying. Zach feels like he’s letting Chris down and hates the feeling. He tries to find the scent again, but even the tracks are hard to find now. They did a decent job hiding the direction they took. Zach is relatively confident that he when finds a slight disturbance in the path that they went that way. He heads that way picking up faint hints of Colin, but it’s difficult. Eventually, the trail goes cold again.

I’m sorry, Chris, I lost it again. Zach is frustrated with himself.

It’s okay. Just keep looking. There has to be something. Chris links the group, everyone searching for any sign of Colin or Jamie.

Umm, Chris, incoming. Jess barely links him. When he hears her, he turns to see Moon race out of the trees.

Moon is relieved the shifting stops the more she runs after the group of wolves, and she starts to think she will never catch up to them. She is also getting sick of having to run after everyone. When they stop, she almost catches up to them. She could hear them rustling in the leaf litter. If she stopped and thought about it, she could hear everything, and she can clearly smell Colin even over the smell of the other wolves. His scent is as clear to her as a neon sign. Moon is delighted when the wolves stop again, and she catches up to them, panting a bit.

Chris and his wolf Zander stand in front of Moon, glaring. They can’t link her, but she gets the message loud and clear they are unhappy with her.

“What? I told you I was going, and I can help. Why did you all stop?” Moon looks at the shaggy wolf as he tilts his head.

“I can smell him; I can smell everything, it seems. But he definitely went that way.” Moon doesn’t hide her own surprise as she points and starts heading the opposite way Zach was about to try.

Well, I guess we follow Moon now. Chris links, and Zach puffs air out his nose. His wolf was less than thrilled with being replaced by her. Zach convinces his wolf that if she can help them find Colin, then that’s really all that matters. His wolf Zane grumbles about it, but he agrees that finding the Alpha is all that is important.

Moon can hear the voice muttering in her head, but it’s a confusing garble she can’t understand. She can make out Colin’s name sometimes, but that’s about it. The thing Moon is struggling with the most is keeping herself calm. If she gets worked up, she can feel her heart race and like her body wants to shift, and after the last time, she is afraid of what might happen.

As she continues walking, she can almost feel that she’s getting closer, and she looks at Chris, his large wolf form walking next to her. His massive head is at eye level with hers, his modeled gray fur bristles a little, and Moon starts looking around, unaware of what he senses, and he can’t tell her.

When she smells something different, she doesn’t know what it is. Most of the sents she has smelled she doesn’t know because she never noticed them before, but whatever it is has Chris brisling and moving closer to her as his muscles tense.

If she could hear the wolves linking one another, she would have known they were getting close to a small hunting cabin but had left her pack’s territory and were now in David’s. If she could hear Chris, she would have heard in swearing and spitting Jamie’s name. She could hear him start to growl and see wolves running ahead of her.

Moon scrunched her nose as a man stepped out from a tree several yards away, but she knew instantly who it is, Jamie. He smiles at her arrogantly, slicking back his hair.

“Sorry, cutie, but if I’m not mistaken, you are on the wrong side of the border. I also happen to know that Alpha David will see that as a breach in your agreements about crossing pack lines without permission and all.”

Moon glares at him, but he isn’t wrong technically; it would be a breach of their agreement if her pack crosses pack lines without David’s permission, but Moon has a thought.

“Well, good thing no one here is a Big Springs Pack member,” Moon announces loudly, and if wolves could laugh, that is the sound Chris makes next to her.

“You are,” Jamie argues.

“Nope; as of this afternoon, we signed the pack to Colin. We are all Twin Falls pack members now if you want to get technical about it. But you should know that, shouldn’t you? Unless you have made a change, we don’t know about?” Moon doesn’t hide her anger. She knows he must have joined David’s pack last night, or he would have known the plan. For her pack to join Colin’s pack and her. Chris shifts and is standing next to Moon. She moves just a little bit away from him and all his nakedness.

“David won’t have a problem with Twin Falls members looking for their Alpha, will he? I think in cases of emergency, we are permitted. And why the sudden switch? Jamie, I’m hurt you didn’t even say goodbye.” The venom in Chris’s words is unlike the kind and easygoing man Moon knows.

“Well, I was never respected at Twin Falls, and David offered me a position I couldn’t refuse, so I left.” Jamie shrugs. “But your Alpha isn’t here, and you have no proof or cause to search his lands, so leave.”
