Chapter 55

Llanne said goodnight to Zane and went back.

When she was a few meters away from the wooden building, she heard a woman's soft sobs from the side.

They were in the deep mountains, and it was the middle of the night. With the leaves rustling from the wind and the woman's cries, these elements together could make a typical horror movie. Lianne's scalp went numb with fright, and she had goosebumps all over her body. She was about to run away, but out of curiosity, she glanced at the source of the sobs.

Not far away, Lianne saw a weeping woman sitting under a tree. The faint light shone on her through the branches.

Lianne recognized this woman. It was Layla, Maddox Queen's wife. She was a typical Jameiran beauty. She was cute and soft when she spoke and smiled gently and sweetly. She was the kind of woman that would make people feel very protective of her.

Why was she crying outside and alone in the middle of the night? Did Maddox not care about her? "Stop crying. Your tears are useless." Maddox's deep voice came from the shadows.

It turned out that Maddox was right next to the tree trunk. The light was too dim, so Lianne had not seen him at first.

The tone he used to speak to his wife was even colder than that of a stranger. He was completely different from the man who doted on his wife during the day.

Layla wiped away her tears and mustered up her courage. "Maddox, let's get a divorce!"

"Divorce?" Maddox sneered. He pinched Layla's chin to raise her head slightly so she could meet his gaze. "Layla, do you think you have a say in ending this marriage? From the moment you married into my family, you can only die as my wife!"

What a domineering man!

Lianne sighed quietly and sneaked away.

Earlier that afternoon, Lianne had been envious seeing how sweet the couple was. Who knew that they were arguing about divorce behind the scenes?

There were more and more divorced people in society, so why did so many people still want to get married?

Lianne did not sleep well that night and only woke up at noon the next day. She had big dark. circles under her eyes.

One of the reasons was that Eugene and Rosa next door were too energetic. The couple fooled around until midnight, which seriously affected Lianne's sleep.

However, Eugene, one of the culprits, was still in high spirits. He was smiling and joking. "Ms. Simpson, what's the matter with your dark circles?" Lianne was speechless.

What was the matter? Did he not have a clue?

Eugene looked at Zane again. "Zane, I'm afraid you're not a celibate, huh?"

Zane wanted to ignore him. "You'd better keep your mouth shut."

Eugene raised his hand as a sign of surrender. "Okay, okay. I won't say anything. However, if your two were so tired last night, you should've let Ms. Simpson sleep a little longer. Why did you want to get up so early?"

What he implied was obvious. If Lianne kept silent, it would be difficult to prove her innocence. when this matter spread. "Mr. Fuller, I am merely Mr. Atlas's assistant, so please be mindful of your words." Unexpectedly, Zane spoke almost at the same time as Lianne. His voice was deep, powerful, and serious as he said, "Eugene, don't make such jokes about girls."

"You two really don't have the kind of relationship I think you have?" Eugene did not believe that nothing was going on between the two. Even if they were not a couple at the moment, something would definitely come up in the future.

Eugene had known Zane for so many years, and he had never seen Zane's gaze stay on any woman for more than three seconds.

The way Zane looked at Lianne was so gentle and affectionate. However, he probably did not realize it himself. After all, Zane was emotionally unavailable.

A joke was only funny if both parties found it amusing, so Eugene apologized in time. "I'm sorry, Ms. Simpson!"

Lianne did not want to talk to him anymore. She did not care if he was a big shot.

Rosa took Lianne aside and was apologetic. "Lianne, I'd like to apologize to you on behalf of Eugene. He doesn't usually joke with people he's not close to. Since Mr. Atlas brought you here, Eugene thought you two were a couple. That's why he joked like that."

"It's okay, Mrs. Fuller." Lianne knew very well what kind of party this was. She should not have come, and no one else was to blame.

If she had known Zane would bring her to this kind of private gathering, Lianne would have rather not taken that triple pay.
