Chapter 561 

Agnes has known for a long time that the Thomas brothers, Cilian and Berlin, have been sticking together like glue, living under the same roof for decades. Cilian spoiled his little brother rotten.

Word on the street is that it’s because their parents died when they were young, so they had to rely on each other.

Even though Berlin wasn’t exactly a capable person, Cilian still cut him in on a significant chunk of the shares, keeping him living large.

And it’s precisely because of Cilian’s soft spot for his brother that the name Berlin held a lot of weight in the circle of the filthy rich.

After they stepped into the mansion, Laura gave them a brief introduction.

The mansion is massive, with over a hundred rooms from top to bottom.

Laura said, “Even though this mansion is huge, most of it is the Thomas family’s turf. Don’t get too nosy, there are some no–go zones here. Cilian often goes out for business trips, so he’s not home most of the time, only popping in for a few days every now and then. But his two sons, Raleign Thomas and Kevin Thomas, are permanently living here, and these two have a bit of a bad reputation, so you’d better stay away from them.”

All of this was noticed by Beatrice, who had just gone upstairs.

She saw Hammer taking advantage of her mom again.

In this household, Hammer was the one person Beatrice couldn’t stand the most.

Hammer has been the butler for the Thomas family for twenty years, having the run of the place.

Cilian trust him implicitly, even Berlin had to give him some respect in this house.

Beatrice had no idea when her mom started getting closer with him.

Beatrice confronted Laura about it once, and Laura just said she was doing it to make life in this house a bit easier, but Beatrice thought it was downright uncomfortable.

Every time she saw Hammer’s eyes full of desire for Laura, she felt sick to her stomach.

But because of Laura, Hammer always treated her like a queen in this house.

Suddenly, Beatrice had an idea.

Hammer asked Agnes to wait in the living room while he went to arrange the guest room.

Just as Hammer was about to head upstairs, Beatrice called him back, “Hammer, I need a favor.”

Hammer was surprised, “Ms. Beatrice, whatever you need, just say the word. I’m your butler, I’ll make sure it gets done.”

Beatrice has always been cold to him, mainly because she discovered his relationship with Laura.

Even though he’s been trying to butter her up, it doesn’t seem to have any effect.

But today, she’s coming to him for a favor, which is a rare sight.

Beatrice suddenly walked up to him and whispered something in Hammer’s ear.

A conflicted look appeared on Hammer’s face, “But, Mrs. Berlin just told me to…”

“My mom cares a lot about our reputation, you have no idea what this woman did to her in the past. She’s a cold–blooded woman, otherwise why didn’t my mom get a single penny after my dad’s death, even though she was his legal wife. All the company and properties were taken over by my sister. Over the past years, my mom has had a hard time because of her.”

Agnes waited in the living room for a while.

Hammer came in, “Ms Agnes, your room is ready. Please follow me” 

Agnes got up and followed Hammer upstairs.

He led her to an attic at the top of the house.

The moment he opened the door, a musty smell hit her.

It didn’t look like a guest room at all. There was nothing but a bed, and the ceiling sloped down so steeply that you could hardly stand upright on the bed.

For a mansion with hundreds of rooms, they took her to an attic?

Hammer seemed to pick up on Agnes‘ confusion.

He said with a smile, “I’m sorry. You mentioned you need a firm bed, and this is the only room in the mansion with a firm bed. It’s late now, and it’s not convenient to move the bed. You can stay here for tonight, and I’ll arrange something else tomorrow.”

Agnes took a look at him, so this is Kevin, who has been pursuing Justin, but never successfully.

Kevin propped his head with one hand, lifted his eyelids, and glanced in Agnes‘ direction.

Then he teased, “Beatrice, your plastic surgery is done well. I finally saw the template today. Beatrice, you got your face done to look like your sister, huh?” 

Hearing this, Beatrice’s face turned dark with anger. “Kevin, you should stick to your own business. Besides, I only had minor surgery, how do you know she didn’t have any?” 

Kevin replied carelessly, “I can tell at a glance if someone’s had plastic surgery. But even with surgery, Beatrice, you’re still not as good–looking as the original.”

Beatrice was so angry that she slammed her utensils and stormed out of the dining room.

As she passed Agnes, she glared at her fiercely, as if she could eat her alive.

At breakfast, Laura asked, “Agnes, what are your plans for today?”

Agnes pretended to rub her head, “Ms. Laura, I think I caught a cold last night, my head hurts a bit now, I want to rest during the day.”

Raleign, sitting next to Agnes, suddenly reached out and touched her forehead, then said, “You have a fever, you’re so hot, I’ll take you to the hospital.”

Kevin gave Agnes the once–over, “What were you doing in Laura’s room?” 

Agnes smiled, “I came to see Ms. Laura, but she wasn’t in.”

Kevin chuckled, “I noticed you go in. You were in there for 12 minutes. Did it really take you that long to figure out no one was there?”

Agnes frowned, “Are you spying on me?”

“Not spying, just curious.”

After a moment of silence, Agnes broke into a grin, “Kevin, you would keep this secret for me, right? We’re friends after all.” 

Kevin raised an eyebrow, “We just met yesterday, Ms. Agnes.”

Agnes kept on smiling, “I’m friends with Justin, and given your relationship with Justin, we can be friends too.”

Mentioning Justin, Kevin’s face changed instantly, “You know Justin?” 

“We’re pretty tight. I even know his private cell number.”

Agnes thought to herself, “Sorry Justin, I had to throw you under the bus.” 

Kevin was silent for a moment, then said, “Deal.”

Agnes didn’t propose any deal, but they both knew the score.

Kevin’s gaze softened a bit, “If you’re looking for something valuable, Ms. Laura keeps all her important stuff in her office safe, not here.”

Kevin was sharp, he had guessed her intention.

Agnes said, “Thanks for the tip.”

After parting with Kevin, Agnes planned to head back to her room.

Her cold seemed to have gotten worse, her head was buzzing.

She didn’t find what she wanted, she couldn’t stir up more trouble.

Just as she reached her room, Beatrice came out of hers.

Ironically, for the past ten years, when she was at the Pritchard family villa, her room was opposite Beatrice’s.

And now, Beatrice’s room was opposite her guest room.

Just then, Hammer came up, “Ms. Beatrice, has Ms. Agnes upset you again?”

Beatrice replied, “I don’t want to see Agnes in this house tomorrow. I don’t care how you do it, but she needs to be gone.”

With that, Beatrice headed downstairs.

Agnes, in her room, was half–asleep, waking up late in the evening, awakened by one of the house’s servants.

She woke up with a headache.

This damn cold.

As Agnes opened her door, the servant stood there, saying, “Hammer wants to replace Ms. Agnes‘ bed with a new wooden one. We don’t have any hard beds in the villa, but there are a few wooden ones in the side building. Hammer asked Ms. Agnes to come with me to pick one, so we can switch it to the guest room.” 

Agnes waved her hand dismissively, “It’s okay, no need to change it.” 

“But I can’t do that, it’s my job to follow Hammer’s orders. If I don’t do it right, Hammer will fire me.” The servant pleaded and insisted.

Not wanting to be a pain, Agnes followed the servant to the side building.

She initially just wanted to pick any random bed, but this servant insisted on showing her every room.

With a throbbing headache, Agnes reluctantly followed.

But at some point, she turned around to find the servant gone.

Agnes was a bit lost.

Just then, the servant burst into the room.

Seeing Agnes browsing the documents, she exclaimed, “Ms. Agnes, you can’t just touch those files!”

At that moment, Hammer walked in, “Ms. Agnes, this is the research lab of the Thomas family’s third young master, an off–limits area in this villa. Please leave immediately.”

Agnes quickly put down the files and followed Hammer back to the main villa.

It’s dinner time, everyone had returned.

Beatrice sat at the dinner table, a slight smile playing on her lips.

Ryder got up, poured a glass of water, and handed her the medicine.

Agnes was still a bit weak, but she definitely felt a lot better than before.

Agnes threw back the covers, looked around, “Where am I?”

“My room.”

Agnes frowned, “Why did you bring me to your room? What if someone misunderstands? I should be in the guest room.”

“You’ve been sleeping here for two hours. If someone was going to misunderstand, they would have done it already.”

Agnes sat on the bed, feeling a bit helpless.

But she really shouldn’t worry about it, since she was going to leave soon anyway.

Agnes was quiet for a moment, then suddenly asked, “Why did you come back all of a sudden?”

Ryder said, “I came back to take care of some business. What about you? Why are you here?”

He took out a digital thermometer and checked her temperature again, “Your fever’s gone down a little. Are you still feeling dizzy?”

Agnes didn’t have the energy to talk, she felt weak and sore all over.

After Agnes lay down and closed her eyes, she suddenly opened them again, asking, “If I’m sleeping in your room, where are you sleeping?”

“Don’t worry about me. There are over a hundred rooms here, I have plenty of places to crash.”

Agnes thought that made sense.

But she didn’t expect to wake up the next morning and find Ryder sleeping on the couch.

The couch was small and Ryder was a big guy, there was no way he could stretch out comfortably.

Despite the warmth of the room, it was still winter and Ryder didn’t have a single blanket on him.

Agnes sighed.

She picked up the blanket from the bed and walked over to the couch.

Then she gently laid the blanket over Ryder.

Before she even finished, Ryder called out, grabbing her arm and suddenly opening his eyes.

“Did I wake you?” Agnes asked.

Ryder closed his eyes again, sat up, and rubbed his nose, “No, just had a nightmare.”

“Why did you call my name in your nightmare? What did you dream about?”

Ryder looked up at Agnes, his expression cold, “I dreamt we got married.”

Agnes was just joking, but she didn’t expect Ryder to say something like that.

Over the years, they had kept in touch and met regularly.

But they never talked about personal feelings and always deliberately kept a certain distance.

The maid nervously glanced at Mr. Ryder.

Mr. Ryder looked indifferent, just saying to Agnes, “Let’s go.”

Beatrice was sarcastic on the side, “With Ryder taking care of you, I bet you’ll recover faster than anyone else. Look at his dark circles, you two must’ve had a rough night, huh?”

Beatrice deliberately made their relationship sound ambiguous.

Raleign laughed and said, “Ryder, you should’ve told us if you got a girlfriend. Your dad would be thrilled.”

Ryder responded, “It’s nothing like that.”

Ryder’s voice was cold, but his tone casual, but people weren’t easily convinced.

Taking a girl to his room? How could that be a misunderstanding?
