Upon hearing this, Kevin instantly fell silent.

Agnes thought Ryder was being overly worried. As a doctor, he often imagined a common cold as a precursor to various other diseases.

Agnes got up and said, “Let’s go.”

Agnes‘ room was on the third floor, and the dining room was on the second floor.

After leaving the room, they still had to cross a long corridor.

Below the stairs was a large, bright hall.

When Agnes reached the top of the stairs, she sneezed.

Ryder frowned.

He said, “I’ll get you a coat, wait here for a moment.” 

Ryder turned and left.

Agnès stood on the stairs waiting.

Agnes had thought that there was a slim chance Jared might show up.

She told herself, even if Jared did appear, she could handle it cool and collected. But, when she saw that icy figure, her heart squeezed, and breathing became difficult. Especially when she saw that tall and beautiful woman–Valeria–standing next to him.

They were talking, but when Jared looked up, his body stiffened. He had seen Agnes. It felt like the air had turned to ice. Jared’s gaze was like a sharp sword, cutting through the ice. Facing him, Agnes felt tense.

But Jared’s eyes were calm, as still as water, looking at Agnes, without a hint of emotion..

Yeah, he knew all along that Agnes was here. Agnes stood there, watching Jared leave Valeria and walk towards her. She knew, one day she would have to face him. Agnes had only been back for a few days and couldn’t avoid Jared. She even suspected that Jared had come here on purpose.

With each step Jared took closer, they kept their eyes on each other. Agnes didn’t know what he was going to do, but just the thought of it was exhausting, she didn’t want to have to fight him every time.

Suddenly, Agnes felt warmth on her shoulder. A men’s trench coat was draped over her. She turned her head and saw Ryder. “I couldn’t find your coat, so wear mine for now,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jared stopped in his tracks and Ryder looked towards the staircase. Their gazes met, one cold, the other even colder.

Ryder was the first to speak, “Uncle.”

Jared walked towards them, his eyes icy, but he didn’t look at Agnes. He asked Ryder, “When did you get back?” Ryder answered casually, “Yesterday.” And then there was no more interaction between them.

Jared’s gaze fell on Agnes‘ face. She saw disbelief and suspicion in his eyes. Jared, the sharp–minded man, had definitely figured out something. But Agnes didn’t know how much he had figured out, and what he was thinking.

Valeria came upstairs and seemed surprised to see Agnes. “Ms. Agnes, I didn’t expect to see you here.” Agnes smiled, “Ms. Thomas, it’s been a while.” Valeria suddenly realized something, “They said Ryder came back today to bring his girlfriend home, is his girlfriend Ms. Agnes?

Valeria expressed her confusion openly.

Agnes was about to deny it, but heard Ryder’s affirmative answer, “Yes.”

Hearing this, Agnes was slightly taken aback.

Why would Ryder say that?

Jared’s face looked really gloomy.

Valeria also raised an eyebrow, saying, “Four years have passed. You two have changed more than I expected. But, let me congratulate you two first.”

Agnes felt her head spinning, struggling to comprehend the situation.

She thought, “What on earth is Ryder doing? Why would he claim me as his girlfriend, especially in front of Jared?”

Jared’s gaze bore into Agnes, his voice frosty. “Is he the boyfriend you mentioned before?”

Agnes suddenly remembered that she had once told Jared she had a boyfriend.

Before she could respond, Ryder had already draped his arm over her shoulder. “Uncle, I’m sorry for not telling you this earlier, but Agnes and I, we’ve already reconnected three years ago.”

Jared felt like he’d been shoved into a freezer, a chill radiating from him.

Agnes was in Manhattan. Ryder was in Manhattan.

Jared remembered the first time he met Agnes in Manhattan, at a crossroad near Ryder’s hospital.

Jared suddenly wanted to laugh.

The irony was just too much.

He had been searching for Agnes for four years, creating a massive information network.

Yet, Ryder had known her whereabouts all along and never said a word.

What’s even more ironic was that Agnes always said she broke off their marriage because she couldn’t let go of the resentment between Alyssa and her mother, because Alyssa was his family.

Jared had always comforted himself with this reason over the years.

At least Agnes didn’t stop loving him.

But now it seemed that was all a lie! All of Agnes‘ words were just excuses!

Because Ryder was Alyssa’s son.

How could she put aside her resentment to be his girlfriend?

Jared had never felt so ridiculous, this was the most absurd thing in the world.

And he did laugh, but the curve of his lips was chilling to behold.

He seemed still in disbelief, asking Agnes, “So, you two reconnected three years ago?” 

Agnes clenched her teeth, raised her head, her calm gaze meeting Jared’s cold eyes. “Yes, I ran into Ryder not long after I moved to Manhattan. Over the years, my workplace was very close to his hospital.”

“Good, very good, Agnes, Ryder… how wonderful.”

Jared turned and headed upstairs, his steps steady.

Valeria cast a meaningful glance at Agnes and Ryder before following him.

Agnes stood in place for a long time.

Her fingers on the railing, feeling the cold seeping into her fingertips.

“Ryder, why did you say that?” Agnes finally asked.

Ryder put his hand over Agnes‘, holding it lightly, “Agnes, in the past, I didn’t have the resources to compete with my uncle. I was always a step behind him, but now, I want to strike first.”

Agnes pulled her hand out of Ryder’s, “Ryder, I appreciate what you did for Nocturne, but you should know, there’s no chance for anything to happen between us. The obstacles between Jared and me are also there between you and me.”

Ryder responded, “I understand, you mean my mother is the culprit of your mother’s misfortune. But Agnes, isn’t the reason why you came back to investigate this? My mother may make mistakes, but she would never use such despicable means. I have faith in this. So, I will help you find out the truth. If things are really as you said, I will still wait for you, whether it’s ten years or a lifetime, I will make up for my mother’s sins.”

Chapter 574 

Agnes stared straight at Ryder.

Ryder was completely calm and collected.

He was no longer that boy they used to call Prince Frost back in school.

Now, he was more reserved and steady, a rising star in the medical field.

And gone were the patience, confusion, and conflicts in his eyes.

At this moment, what Agnes saw in him was a firm belief and a hint of passion.

Unconsciously, Agnes averted her gaze.

“Making amends for Alyssa” was something Jared used to say.

Even though they were both Alyssa’s biological children, Agnes didn’t have the same struggle and conflict towards Ryder as she did towards Jared.

Agnes flatly rejected him, “Ryder, regardless of whether there’s more to the story, we can’t be together. Not just because of our complicated past, but the Whitfield family wouldn’t approve of us either.”

Her and Ryder, it was just too absurd.

Ryder said, “You don’t need to worry about my grandpa and mom.”

Agnes responded, “I’m not worried about them, Ryder. I won’t fall in love with anyone again. I just want to live a peaceful life with Nocturne. Love isn’t necessary for me, it just brings problems. I appreciate your care and efforts for Nocturne, but Ryder, you’re a smart guy, you should know, that’s not love. There’s no chance between us.”

Agnes wanted to make everything clear in one go.

Her past relationship with Ryder had already caused a lot of trouble, just thinking about it made Agnes feel tired.

She didn’t want to go back to the past, and she didn’t care what others thought.

But because of Nocturne, Agnes knew she needed to maintain contact with Ryder.

She didn’t want this contact to give Ryder any hope.

Ryder saw the determination in Agnes‘ face and laughed, “Alright, you don’t need to reject me in a rush, there’s plenty of time in the future. Let’s go, time to have dinner.”

Ryder was so much like Jared.

Cilian Thomas was back, sitting at the head of the table.

His public reputation was high, with some even saying he had superhuman abilities.”

But when Agnes saw him in person, he was different from what she imagined.

The first time she saw him, she thought he was a “handsome and well–mannered middle–aged man“.

Indeed, Cilian was known as a heartthrob in the finance world when he was young.

Even though he was middle–aged now, he still retained his good looks and his demeanor was still gentlemanly.

Speaking of Cilian’s three sons, none of them were like him.

Ryder kept it short and simple, only introducing Agnes by name. But everyone was curious about the relationship between him and the girl living in his room. They had no idea how far along these two had come.

Agnes politely greeted Cilian, “Mr. Thomas, I’ve always admired you.”

Cilian replied, “Please sit, we can chat over dinner.”

Once Agnes took her seat, she noticed Jared across from her, looking a bit under the weather. He hadn’t glanced her way since she walked in.

A little later, Beatrice strolled into the dining room, heading straight for Jared, “Mr. Whitfield, you’re back.”

Kevin joked from the side, “Beatrice, I remember you usually call him brother–in–law, why the switch to Mr. Whitfield now?”

Beatrice used to call him brother–in–law because Jared didn’t mind. She knew Jared enjoyed it. But now, with Agnes around, the address had to change. And none of the Thomas family even knew who Agnes was.

Little did they know, Beatrice had been calling him brother–in–law way before Jared had met Valeria. Now, she can’t do that anymore in front of Agnes. Beatrice shot Kevin a look and didn’t say anything, just sat down next to Jared.

Agnes watched all this, finding it rather ironic. Jared seemed perfectly at ease, with Valeria on his left and Beatrice on his right.

Cilian turned to chat with Agnes, “Valeria just told me, you and Ryder have known each other for three years in Manhattan?”

Agnes replied, “We’ve known each other much longer than that.”

In fact, many people present, including Valeria, knew about her past. Would their attitude towards her change if Cilian knew she was Jared’s ex–wife, or Ryder’s aunt?

However, throughout dinner, Cilian didn’t overly focus on her relationship with Ryder. He just asked about her work and life as usual, as if she were just an ordinary guest of the Thomas family.

But everyone knew that in Cilian’s mind, Agnes was already Ryder’s girlfriend. He just didn’t want to make a big deal out of their relationship to avoid putting pressure on them.

Throughout dinner, Jared didn’t say a word, just kept drinking.

Valeria couldn’t bear it, advising him, “Your stomach hasn’t recovered yet. You better lay off the booze.”

Raleign joked, “Valeria, you’re already nagging about Jared’s drinking before you’re even married. I’ve had quite a bit myself, how come you’re not worried about me?” 

Valeria retorted, “Don’t make fun of me. You’ve built up your alcohol tolerance on the social circuit, I don’t need to worry about you. You have plenty of friends, they can take care of you.” 

Raleign said, “Look at Valeria, so sharp–tongued. I was going to respect Mr. Whitfield, but I’m a bit scared now.”

Kevin chimed in leisurely, “Jared’s her fiancé, you as a cousin can’t compare, don’t embarrass yourself here.”

Cilian, hearing their banter, casually asked, “By the way, you two have also been together for so many years. Since you’ve already announced your engagement, when do you plan to hold the ceremony?”

All eyes were on Jared and Valeria.

Agnes was eating her soup when she heard Cilian’s words, and she couldn’t help but pause, her fingers frozen mid–air.

Valeria glanced at Jared and said with a chuckle, “We haven’t nailed down the date yet.”

Jared announced, “Valeria and I are getting engaged next month at Caesar International Hospital in Willowbrook Town. We hope you guys can take a break from your busy schedules and join us.”

Cilian responded with a warm smile, “I see Valeria as my own daughter. I will definitely attend her engagement party, and I’ll bring a decent gift too.” A hint of sadness crept into Agnes‘ heart.

Even though she knew it was true, hearing it straight from them made her feel a mix of emotions.

Beatrice finally lost it and blurted out, “Jared, you’re really getting engaged?”

Beatrice’s face was filled with disbelief, and there was a hint of tears in her eyes.

Her outburst seemed a bit random.

Rumor had it that she and Jared were having a fling.

Especially after Jared went all out helping Beatrice at her birthday party a few days ago.

Now, the word on the street was that Beatrice was Jared’s fiancée.

Everyone’s gaze fell on Beatrice.

Kevin teased, “Beatrice, it’s your sister getting engaged, but why are you so emotional?”

Laura frowned and said, “Beatrice, sit down, stop making a scene.”

Beatrice was furious.

She had always believed that the engagement news was fake news, that Jared couldn’t possibly like Valeria.

But now Jared had admitted it, right in front of Agnes.

It was a fact she couldn’t change.

Beatrice said, “You guys can’t get engaged.”

Cilian frowned and said, “Beatrice, do you realize what you’re doing? Valeria and Jared’s engagement is their business, why are you butting in?” 

Beatrice knew that by doing this, she was risking breaking her image she had built over the years, but all she wanted was to stop Valeria and Jared from getting engaged.

If that woman became Jared’s wife, she would lose all chances.

Beatrice blurted out, “Do you guys know why I used to call him brother–in–law? It’s not because of Valeria, but because Jared was supposed to be my brother–in–law. He and my sister got separated because of a misunderstanding, and now they’re both here. I know he still cares about my sister the most, so I can’t stand by and watch them miss each other again because of their stubbornness.”

Everyone was puzzled, but they quickly caught her drift.

Beatrice was saying that Jared was supposed to be her brother-in–law, and now they were both here…

Everyone knew that Jared had been married once, and this Ms. Agnes was Beatrice’s sister…

Their relationships were getting messier.

Raleign said, “Ms. Agnes, were you once married to Mr. Whitfield?”

But Beatrice wouldn’t budge. She said to Valeria, “Valeria, you know my brother–in–law doesn’t love you. Why do you still want to marry him? Will you be happy marrying someone who doesn’t love you?”

Valeria suddenly stood up, and with a chilling, sarcastic smile, she said, “Beatrice; you’re stirring up trouble here just for yourself. What’s the point of mimicking your sister all these years? You want to sabotage my engagement, and you’re using your sister as a shield. Do you think you can get away freely? Do you think Jared doesn’t know about your pretend memory loss and mimicry of your sister? He hasn’t exposed you only because he doesn’t want to. To us, your actions have always been nothing more than a pathetic clown show.” 

Valeria didn’t hold back against Beatrice, and she exposed Beatrice right in front of Laura.

Over the years, Valeria has been busy with work and hardly came home.

But she never took Laura and Beatrice seriously.

Jared gave Agnes across from him a cold look and said, “Who are you to say that I’ve been holding onto her in my heart all these years? I’ve long forgotten about the past. I had a brief marriage with Ms. Agnes, but after the divorce, we had nothing to do with each other. As for you, I won’t develop anything with you, I hope you can respect yourself.”

Beatrice couldn’t accept it, he was lying, he must be lying.

Beatrice grabbed Jared’s arm, “Jared, you do have feelings for me, right? At the birthday party, you spent over 20 million to help me out.”

Agnes didn’t even lift her eyelids to look at Jared.

Beatrice, on the other hand, collapsed in her seat.

Jared had cut off all ties with her, even said he was disgusted by her.

He even said he helped her out to not affect Valeria?

Could she have been wrong, did Jared only care about Valeria?

Beatrice couldn’t say a word, but tears kept streaming down her face.

Seeing her like this, Laura grabbed her arm, “Are you crazy? I’ll take you back to your room to think about your actions.”

With that, she called over Hammer.

Agnes said anxiously, “I think there’s a point there. Am I too dependent on you, Jared? Don’t be too nice to me anymore. I’m scared that if I leave you, I won’t be able to survive.”

Jared pinned her down, pinched her face, and answered, “Leave me? Where do you think you’re going, Agnes? I’m telling you, you’re not getting away from me in this lifetime.”

Back then, Agnes really thought they would never part.

Cilian finally broke his silence, “Everyone has a past. I can understand you guys, but let’s not dig up old stuff. Since both of you have started new lives, just let the past be past.”

Cilian raised his glass, everyone else followed suit.
