He Is Not Alone
Chapter 17

It is time for a phone call to Washington. Over the weekend, we head to Anchorage and purchase a throwaway phone for cash. Monday morning, I call the FBI in Washington, DC. It takes a few tries, but I finally get to talk to the Director.

“Mr. Comely, Will Smythe. I got your message, so to speak, with the visit from the agents in Denver. What do you want?”

Mr. Comely has his secretary start a trace on the phone call while getting a hold of his assistant director. The call is also recorded.

“Mr. Smythe or should I call you Mr. Smith? Either way, you are wanted by the government for crimes against the President and Secretary of State, not to mention the deaths of two FBI agents in FL and the hospitalization of Susan Johnson. I would suggest that you turn yourself in immediately. The next time I send agents to get you will not be simply to arrest you. They will be ordered to bring you in dead or alive. Do I make myself clear?”

Mr. Comely’s secretary lets him know that the phone call is coming from a cell phone in Anchorage, AK.

“I’ll call you next week. I need to think about this and looks like I need to find a lawyer. Goodbye.”

Will hangs up and turns to Amy.

“Well, at least now I know why they want me. Question is what to do about it. From what I can see there are two options. One, I turn myself in and use the powers to change their minds and let me go. The other option is to turn myself in, go to trial and let the courts prove that my powers do not exist and that the FBI Director was on a vendetta, be found not guilty and set free.”

“Will, I don’t like either of those options. So many things could go wrong. Why not move to Canada or South America or someplace? As long as we are together, that is the important thing.”

“America is our home. I don’t want to be forced to leave it and not be able to come back, always looking over my shoulder for trouble. If they decide to get me out of the picture, a sniper could do it from a mile away and I would never know about it. You would be left alone and we would never have a family. Is that what you want?”

“No.”

“First thing I need to do is find a good lawyer. Sandy was a lawyer before she died. Maybe Lou, her boss, will be able to help.”

Will calls Lou.
