Chapter 8 Misunderstanding 

Amy paused for a moment upon hearing Wesley’s words, but then she nodded and said, “Wesley, you’re very thoughtful.” 

“Let’s go. I’ll take you home.” 

“Okay.” 

Then, Layla heard the sound of the car driving away. 

Only after twenty minutes had passed since the car’s departure did Layla manage to regain her composure and leave the parking lot. 

Layla walked down the street, looking like a ragged doll. 

After leaving the parking lot, Layla glanced at the time and realized it was almost 10 o’clock at night. She calculated that if she took the subway now, she would definitely miss the last connecting bus. 

After some consideration, Layla realized she had no choice but to hail a taxi. 

After waiting for five minutes, she finally saw an empty taxi. Layla raised her hand to flag it down, but her phone suddenly rang at that moment. 

It was an unknown number. 

Just as Layla was hesitating whether to answer it, a white car 

“Yes,” Layla answered cautiously, looking at the driver and asking, “Who are you?” 

The driver made a phone call, and Layla’s phone started ringing. 

The driver waved his phone toward Layla and said, “Mr. Harrington arranged this car for you. He instructed me to pick you up from this location.” 

Upon hearing the name Mr. Harrington, Layla instinctively took a step back. 

The driver enthusiastically gave his relationship advice, saying, “Ms. Edwards, just get in the car. It’s normal for couples to have arguments, but it’s late now, and it might not be safe for you to take the subway and then transfer to a bus.” 

“How do you…” Layla wanted to ask the driver how he knew her transportation plans, but she was cut off by the driver. 

“Your boyfriend told me everything. He said your home is far from here and asked me to ensure your safety.” 

With the driver’s words, Layla felt that she shouldn’t refuse 

anymore. 

Besides, Layla knew she had no authority to decline what Wesley had arranged. 

“Where did he ask you to take me?” 

The driver stated an address. Layla confirmed it was her home and then got into the car. 

After Layla got in the car, the driver started talking incessantly. 

Layla was absent–minded, responding half–heartedly to the driver’s chatter. 

When they were just a few minutes away from the destination, the driver suddenly said with great sincerity, “Ms. Edwards, I think your boyfriend is really a good lad. I’ve been driving a taxi for many years, and it’s the first time I’ve seen a man who can be so caring and considerate toward his girlfriend after an argument. He’s really a keeper.” 

Layla remained silent. 

Seeing that she remained silent, the driver continued, “I’ve been driving a taxi for eight years. Throughout all these years, I have often picked up girls who were left behind by their boyfriends after arguments…” 

“Sir, you’ve misunderstood,” Layla interrupted and said, “Mr. Harrington and I are not in a romantic relationship.” 

The driver was momentarily stunned upon hearing this, but then he smiled and said, “Ms. Edwards, you’re just joking, right? If you’re not in a romantic relationship, how could he know you so well?” 

“Sir, I’m telling the truth. He and I are really not involved romantically.” 

Seeing Layla’s expression in the rearview mirror, the driver realized that she might be telling the truth, and he awkwardly fell silent.

but the driver heard it clearly. 

“There’s nothing impossible in this world,” the driver said, 

pointing to her lips and asking, “Did he cause the wound on your lips?” 

Layla froze for a moment, then covered her lips. 

Seeing her reaction, the driver smiled knowingly and drove 

away. 

Layła unconsciously touched the corner of her lips. Standing under a streetlight, she took out her phone, opened the camera app, and under the yellowish light, she saw her lips swollen and bruised.
