Chapter 44: Sahara’s Reawakening

“We need to get out of here. Neither of us have had anything to eat or drink all day. What if they never come back to let us out? Are we supposed to just wait here and hope that someone comes to rescue us? You told me the last of Joshua’s wives who was placed in this chamber of atonement died. I’m not anxious to suffer that fate,” Sahara said, anxiously.

“Joshua says suffering leads us closer to redemption. We shouldn’t have tried to escape. It is because we tried to go against the will of God that we must now suffer for our sins,” Bridget responded, still under Joshua’s spell.

“You’re hopeless. What about what you said before, that you don’t want your child to suffer like you have? I think that you’re just afraid.”

“Of course I’m afraid. You should be too,” Bridget said, as her eyes began to well up with tears.

“Don’t you remember how scared I was when I was first brought here? When I got here I was the one crying and you were the strong one. I’m tired of living in fear. If we want to be free were going to have to fight for it. If you’re comfortable being a slave the rest of your life, then be my guest,” Sahara said, trying to mask her own fear.

“You still have a family out there, but I don’t. At least when I’m here I’m a part of something, and I have a purpose. If I leave here I’ll have nothing and my life will be pointless.”

“Your life will only be pointless if you want it to be. You’re welcome to join my family if you want, if not stay here, but I haven’t given up. The second I get a chance I’m gone!”

“Good luck. How do you expect to get out of here? There is no other way out besides the door, and Bartholomew’s got the only key.”
