Zen's War: Captivity
Chapter 9: Wasted Time

Opening the door, Hector was plunged into darkness. Zen followed close behind Hector. Zen then remembered that Hector had a flare in his backpack, he then quickly asked for it. Taking the flare in his hand, Zen pulled the cap off and ignited it. All that could be seen was the dancing red flame of the flare. Slowly small details of the room came into focus.

To the left there was a small porcelain sink. Above it was a wooden medicine cabinet with a mirror to its right. To the right of the doorway was an old fashioned porcelain tub with clawed feet. Proceeding further into the room Zen noticed a toilet with many cracks in it to his left. Entire pieces of the toilet were missing, lying strewn around the tiled floor.

Derek and Aurora were becoming impatient and a little worried. It had been at least fifteen minutes since Hector and Zen had gone. In reality it had probably only been five minutes, but it seemed much longer. Aurora had always been prone to worrying.

Hector and Zen had been wasting valuable time. So far they had found nothing of value. Time was a luxury they didn’t have. With every passing moment Sahara’s fate was being decided.

They left the bathroom then went back down the hallway. Zen realized he did not need the flare lit any longer. He took the flare and rubbed it out against the wall.

They continued back towards the room they had entered the house from. Slowly the light increased. Again their eyes slowly adjusted to the light. Derek and Aurora were both becoming concerned. When they both realized that Zen and Hector had returned, they were both greatly relieved.

“Did you guys find any evidence that Sahara has been here?” Aurora asked, as soon as she saw them.

“We found no sign of Sahara, and no evidence that she’s been here,” Zen replied disappointedly.

“You guys didn’t find any food or water at all, did you?” Derek asked.

“We didn’t find anything of value. All we’re doing is wasting time,” Zen answered, the look of disappointment on his face.
