Words Unspoken
Chapter Six

My eyes widened as I stared up at the person who appeared out of nowhere. It was Noah. I sighed in relief. He kept his gaze fixated on me, tilting his head slightly, observing and watching my facial expressions. I could already tell I looked a little insane, my eyebrows furrowing as one of my eyes twitched a few times.

"You alright?" Noah asked, his hands stuffed in his pockets. I cleared my throat, nodding my head and quickly looked around once more.

"Yeah, yeah." I replied. "I'm fine...You scared the hell out of me.." I added as I turned my attention back to him, He seemed unfazed by my choice of words, like he was used to it, or completely okay with it. I blinked a few times and just waited for him to answer.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." He said with a soft chuckle as he stuffed his hands in his pockets.

"What are you doing out in the middle of the street? I mean it's not that late but still.." He asked as he kept his eyes on me, almost like he was reading my mind. I kept my mouth shut. I didn't know if I should tell him the truth or make up some lie. My mind was completely scrambled, from the graffiti I saw, my mother and I yelling and the passage I read from the book in the library. I had no idea what to say to him, my head just shook as I kept my mouth shut.

"Alright, well uh, how about we go grab something to eat." He suggested. "My treat." He added with a smile. I shifted slightly and turned my head to look up at him. I just nodded my head and he motioned to follow him.

We made our way down the street, walking side by side, not saying a word. Soon we arrived at the local diner, Daisy's. It was fairly small, like a hole in the wall. Noah opened the door and the two of us stepped inside the half empty diner. Two people were sitting at the counter. There were booths to our left and a few to the right. Noah greeted one of the waiters and the two of us were seated at one of the booths. The waiter handed us a menu.

"I'll bring you guys some water." He said as he walked away leaving us alone. I looked up to see Noah set the menu down, my guess is that he already decided. After a minute I put my menu down and the waiter walked back with our waters.

"Alright, what can I get for the two of you?" He asked, holding his little notepad and a pen looking between the two of us.

"We'll start off with some fries to share and a milkshake, to share as well. Two straws." Noah told the waiter as he held up two fingers. The waiter nodded his head, wrote down and walked off to behind the counter placing the order to the chef.

I turned back around to Noah and raised an eyebrow slightly. "To share?" I asked and leaned back in my seat, arms crossed over my chest.

"Yeah, I figured you weren't gonna eat as much." He said as he folded his hands together and placed them on the table. "You look distressed, and when someone's distressed they usually lose their appetite-"

"Or get a big appetite." I said, interrupting him. He smiled at me and nodded his head. "But you looked like the not eating distressed type."

"You don't know me at all." I said furrowing my eyebrows, keeping my gaze fixated on him. We stared at each other for what felt like hours but was only two minutes and he finally spoke up, breaking the silence between us.

"I'm good at reading people." He said with a sly smirk, raising his eyebrow at me. I rolled my eyes and turned my head away, looking around the diner. There were old vintage posters hanging on the walls and a stereo placed on our left side with a bunch of cd's on a variety of music. Yes, we still have music but music that was appropriate was only allowed. Such as no music with innapropriate language. At the moment though, no music was playing.

My thoughts were wrapped around the mini fight I had with my mother. I can't go back now, they had to have called the authorities by now. I may be their daughter, but when it comes to the rules and laws, my parents followed it to the tea. Raising me and my brother in this world, making sure we were safe no matter what. To follow the rules of this century and not get involved with the wrong crowd.

"Tell me I'm wrong." Noah spoke once again, interrupting my thoughts. I was quiet, he was right and I didn't want to say it.

"Yeah I knew it." He said, his smile widening as our waiter came back with a plate of hot fresh fries and a vanilla milkshake.

"Two straws." He said, pulling out the straws from his apron pocket and handing them to us. "Enjoy." The waiter added as he walked off to help two other customers that walked in.

"Whatever." I mumbled under my breath as I reached over to grab a fry. Even though I wasn't hungry, I decided to eat something anyways. Everything that happened in the span of these past few days have been spinning inside my head and I couldn't get them out. I sat there debating whether I should go home or not. If I went home, I knew the cops were gonna be there ready to take me to prison. But if I didn't go home, where would I go? There was nowhere to really go. I didn't really have any friends, except for my boss Jill, and Susan the librarian. I knew if I asked they wouldn't mind but they would tell me to go home eventually, cause it's the right thing to do. But it wasn't the right thing, living like this wasn't right.

The world used to be free and different and just amazing. Now it's like living in a time loop. Wearing the same thing everyday, speaking the same way...this isn't how humans are supposed to live. It felt like we were stuck in a cage, being told what to do with our lives rather than live it ourselves, the way we want, not what the stupid government and stupid president want.

It had been quiet for a while, neither of us speaking. Just the sounds of forks on plates and the clock on the wall ticking. My gaze flickered over to Noah who took a sip of the milkshake, our eyes met and just looked at each other for a moment.

"Listen I'm sorry, if I said anything to upset you." He said, finally speaking. I let out a small sigh shaking my head, brushing a strand of loose hair away from my face.

"Don't worry about it, you were right." I said truthfully. "It's just been a weird couple of days." I said as I looked down at the table playing with my fingers. I debated once more to myself whether I should tell him what I was thinking or keep it to myself.

"Weird how?" He asked. I didn't look up at him but I knew he was watching me, waiting for me to say something. I took a deep breath before finally making eye contact with him.

"Okay, so have you ever felt like this isn't the type of world you wanna be living in? Like you're just stuck?" I asked him, waiting for a reply. Noah raised an eyebrow as he thought for a moment before speaking.

"Honestly? Yeah, I have."

I let out a sigh of relief. "So I'm not the only one."

"No you're definitely not." Noah said with a chuckle. "But there's more you wanna tell me."

"I know I just met you, but you gotta swear to me, you won't say anything to anyone." I said, keeping my eyes on him. Noah nodded his head as he reached over holding his pinky out. "I pinky swear." He said with a smile. I hesitated for a moment before reaching over and interlocking my pinky with his.

After letting go, I finally told him what was on my mind. From the graffiti I saw the other night, to the passage I read at the library, to the mysterious figure spray painting on the house to cursing at my mother. After explaining it all I slung my head and looked down at my hands not wanting to make eye contact with him. Here we go, call the authorities, do it, just get me the hell out of here. I thought to myself

Noah hadn't said anything for a while and when he hadn't I lifted my head to look at him and he just smiled at me.

"What?" I asked with a raised eyebrow.

"Nothing...I'm just..glad I met you." He said with a nod as he took a sip of the milkshake. I nodded my head in return as I leaned back in my seat, arms crossed over my chest. Noah got up from his seat and I watched him walk over to the stereo. Raising my eyebrow, curious to see what he was doing, he was looking through the CD's. I looked around the diner but it was empty now.

"What are you doing?" I asked as Noah put a CD in the stereo. He clicked the button a few times and turned around to look at me as a song started playing, Come Away With Me by Norah Jones, a very old song. He held his hand out to me and smiled. I raised my eyebrow at him, not getting up.

"Oh come on, dance with me." He said with a chuckle taking a step closer to me. I hesitated for a bit as I looked around the diner once again.

"We're not gonna get in trouble for dancing or listening to music." He said to me, noticing the hesitation and fear in my eyes. Finally I reached up and took his hand in mine as he helped me up and lead me to the space between our booth and the stereo. There wasn't much space for us to dance. I had my hands wrapped around his neck, his hands holding my waist as the two of us swayed to the music

"Come with me." He said as he looked down at me, pulling my body closer to his.

"What? Why would I do that?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Because you have no where to go. Besides, you said so yourself. You don't wanna go home. After what happened." He said as I bit the inside of my cheek, nodding my head.

"You're not alone in all this." He added as he gazed down at me. His eyes flickered around the room before turning back to me.

"We will not be silenced." He whispered. My eyes widened at what he said. Those words that I've seen. It was him, the one spray painting. Was he part of the rebellion group? The music finally stopped and our feet stopped moving. We stared at each other for a few minutes. I took in a deep breath, nodding my head slowly.

"Okay" I replied.
