Chapter 24

Callum’s button fly wasn’t any trouble for Amber to undo. The da mn piece parted like a breeze when she tugged at the fastener. He lifted, giving her access and aiding her in her task. She knew it wouldn’t take much to reveal his straining erection. He hadn’t bothered with underwear. A couple of well-timed tugs and his c ock would be free. And once he removed her jeans, nothing would stand in their way. She’d urge him to take her hard and fast, needing to feel him plunging into her over and over again.

Realization poured over her and her fingers stilled

“Oh s hit! We need a condom,” she blurted, her cheeks heating when his silken flesh slapped into her hand, reminding her of how crazy she’d almost been.

Callum gazed at her, confusion in his eyes. “What?”

“I’m not on a pill.”

“You don’t have to worry about that. He pinched her nipples, causing her to gasp, pa**ion and sexual hunger attempting to overcome reason. Trust me.”

She did trust him, more than he knew but when it came to this, the ramifications were too severe. The cost was too high. Just look at her mother.

“I do,” she said, denying her traitorous body which was begging for her to shut up and let him feel her up. The feeling of his cock prodding her thigh wasn’t helping matters either. She had to steel herself not to respond when he circled his fingers around the pointed peaks covered by her clothing.

“It’s not your time to conceive. If it was, I’d know.”

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I do” He rose above her, his irises like bottled whiskey tempered by fire. “I am part wolf, baby,”

No arguing that.

He was equal parts animal and man, a perfect and sinful combination

Unexpectedly his pocket buzzed again, teasing her fingers through the thin layer of denim. She frowned, manipulating her hand and making out the shape of a phone. She was about to ask who was calling when everything changed, throwing her off balance, and confusing the hell out of her. She didn’t have a chance to brace herself. Callum suddenly disappeared, leaving her gazing at the open sky feeling cold and bereft.

Who knew he could move so fast?

She hadn’t even seen him pull away.

Flipping onto her stopách, she tried to look in his direction. Where had he gone and why? A loud snarl pierced the air. horrifying in a way. When she finally saw Callum her breath caught, sexual heat swiftly turning to alarm.

He was croupfied a few feet in front of her, his hands steady on the ground, resting his weight on his toes. She couldn’t see his face but the tense line of his shoulders told her something was off. He was focused on something in the distance she couldn’t ser.

“Callum?” she asked cautiously, unnerved by his behavior and the awareness that bloomed inside her. He was putting himself between her and what he perceived as a threat.

“Don’t move,” he commanded, his voice deeper than usual, and she felt his power slam into her to reinforce his will “Stay there, Amber. That’s an order.”

There was no time to question him. He leaped from his crouch, moving so quickly that he vanished into the line of trees in

blink. She held her breath, heart pounding in her chest, palms stinging from the pine needles that had dug into her skin.

Seconds ticked by. She wanted to stand but couldn’t. Despite willing her limbs to move, she stayed exactly as he’d left her. Something inside her obeyed Callum’s command, taking it as gospel.

What the hell?

A loud snarl came from the trees, then another. She heard Callum, growling something she couldn’t make out. Silenced followed

She waited, her stomach uneasy.

What had he found out there?

Werewolves weren’t supposed to be frightened of anything. Judging by Callum’s behavior he’d been more than concerned about what he’d sensed, he’d been pi ssed. She hadn’t thought anything could rattle the man. Knowing something had the power to put him on alert like that, taking him from a demanding lover to a hard-edged wolf, made her nervous.

Loud snapping sounds and branches breaking under force interrupted the soft melody of nature. She watched, unable to do anything else, eyes lingering on the space between two trees. More snaps followed and she realized the noises were footsteps. Then she heard Callum’s deep baritone. He was speaking softly, a warning, evident by his tone. When he appeared he was holding another man-no, not a man, a vampire, by the back of the neck.

“You’re on

one stu pid so n of a bi tch”

“I can’t tell my master no, the vampire responded. “I only came to confirm the rumor. I didn’t mean you any harm.”

“The hell you didn’t, Callum snarled, giving the man a firm shake. “You came to spy on me and my f ucking mate, with shit y intentions. So in my book, you meant lots and lots of harm. Now, if you want to leave here in one piece, you’ll tell me who you are and who your master is.”

“I can’t-

“I don’t think you want to say that to me, bloodsucker. I’m trying hard not to kill you. Don’t pi ss me off with lies. I’ve got enough sh it to deal with without you wasting my time.

Nodding, the vampire swallowed. “My name is Anthony and I work for The Messenger Amber watched the vampire speak and noticed his green eyes widening the longer he stared at her. It was as though seeing her more clearly was making him realize something he hadn’t before, putting two and two together. She wasn’t sure what he was seeing or why he looked so spo oked. He lowered his gaze, swallowing.

“It’s okay, baby,” she heard Callum say as she tore her mind from the man. “Go ahead and get up. You’re safe.”

Just like that, whatever spell he’d used to keep her in place broke.

Blood tricked from slices in Anthony’s skin, created by Callum’s claws. She studied the vicious-looking things, shocked by how long and sharp they were even though the vampire’s wound was slowly beginning to heal. When she’d gotten a glimpse of Callum’s fangs earlier, while they’d been having sex, she’d been turned on. This, however, made her feel something else entirely.

Something that sounded like a stampede came from behind her, forcing her to rip her eyes from the claws at Anthony’s throat. She turned in time to see the man from the parlor, Grant, qunning like the devil was on his a ss. He slowed when he saw them, hiyface a mask of agitation. He continued crossing the distance, fury radiating from him, his eyes a bright shade of gold.

“I see I didn’t make it in time.” He lifted his hand, revealing a phone. “Next time, answer your f ucking cell.”

“Tell me what you know, Callum barked without an apology. He was within a few feet of her now, forcing Anthony to walk slightly in front of him.

Without missing a beat, Grant dived in, “Holden found out I was asking questions.”

Callum grimaced. “How?” Callum knew there was a possibility his rival pack Alpha would notice Grant snitting around for information. What he hadn’t counted on was the Alpha doing so that quickly. “I know how good you are. So how come he

found out so quickly!”

Grant sighed, sending Callum an apologetic frown. “Shirley. He found out from Shirley.”

“Shirt” Callum cursed. Now this was a response he hadn’t foreseen.
