Every single being at times makes decisions that are not the smartest. When that happens, I always tell myself that those decisions are never wrong. All leads to a lesson learned. Every heartache leads to strengthening. Every broken promise leads to new opportunities.

At the time, I didn’t even realize that my actions had hurt more than one person, including Alex’s ex-girlfriend, who was his rejected mate.

I mentioned that I did not have extensive experience with the opposite sex, yet I was neither a prudish nor a virgin. I was an Alpha werewolf, with my own urges and needs, and I was crafted by nature to be sexually active and reproduce new life.

Spending the night with Alex was a completely spontaneous and unscheduled event. After the kiss, we went to his house for another drink. His apartment was empty since his friends were still out doing who knows what with who knows who, and that time nobody interrupted us.

I had not thought about the consequences, it just happened.

The following days were tremendously busy, with schoolwork and hospital volunteering. I had spent my time mainly with Teresa, taking care of the children, and luckily no one had had any serious complications. Nobody died, which was a victory.

And as for Alex, he had texted me a few times, but I hadn’t found time to reply nor see him again.

It was a week like any other. But on my way to the library, in that foggy afternoon, I was in a mood that somehow resembled the weather. And I had no real reason for it.

It had nothing to do with the fact that I had received a certain text, that same morning, from a certain male....

As I walked among the mass of students with blurred faces, I checked my phone for the umpteenth time.

Zero messages.

Instead of replying to Alex’s two unread texts, I reread the latest conversation with Rudolph.

After the date with Alex, I had texted Rudy but he hadn’t answered. For three days straight... Until this morning.

And to say that what I had read took me by surprise was an understatement:

‘Hey Ivy. Been busy the last few days. I found my mate.’

That explained why he hadn’t called or texted anymore, I guess.

I should have been happy for him, for having found his other half, but then I could not justify that peg on my chest and my heavy heart.

With my gloomy thoughts, I met Amaia in the library to prepare for our ‘Wereball Aid Program’. We had been asked to volunteer in some of the games of the season, mostly to treat injured players, and because of that, we had to attend the Yearly Wereball Conference happening soon.

Amaia had noticed my mood and hugged me for a while, without saying a word, and offered me her homemade organic tea. According to her, it was a super anti-cancer, consisting of boiled ginger, lemon juice, orange peel and honey.

Immersed in work, kicking out unwanted thoughts invading my brain, I frowned when someone crushed me from behind.

“Tizzy! What are you doing here?”

“I’m just checking that you kids are okay, of course,” He semi-whispered, winking at the boy responsible for keeping silence in the library.

“So, have you done some dirty business in our sexy Tutor’s personal office yet?”

I chuckled and kissed him on the cheek. “No, and I won’t-” My reply was followed by a gasp, as I realized his current state. “Why are you covered in green and black and have grass in your hair?”

My cheeky friend looked like a soldier who had tried to camouflage, just returned from a war mission. And my speculation wasn’t far from reality.

“Dark Diamond won a game a few days ago,” Tiziano winced as if he’d just drunk poison, “and we had to make sure we remind them who the real Alpha team is.”

“So, you and your minions went to their pack and played pranks like bored teenagers?” Amaia asked sarcastically, not moving her eyes from the mountain of papers in front of her.

“No, we didn’t.” He grimaced. “Although we wanted to.” He added, with a pout.

“But then why-?”

“Didn’t you hear?” Tizzy interrupted me, rising his eyebrows, and I shook my head.

“When we went nearby their pack, there was chaos!”

Oh.

It certainly wasn’t what I expected to hear.

“Uprooted trees in the middle of the road, scattered pieces of cars everywhere, several injured wolves. The place was upside down.”

“No way! What do you think happened?”

“Someone from another wereball team maybe?” Amaia proposed.

“I don’t think so. Wereball doesn’t reach those destructive levels. It’s mostly healthy hooliganism.”

“Sure” I mocked, rolling my eyes. “Maybe a group of rogues?”

We frowned, considering that rogues attacks were a rarity ... as there were no rogues in our territories.

Without thinking, ignoring Tiziano and Amaia’s conspiracy theories, I typed a text to Rudolph, swallowing the lump of pride, since he had not replied to my congratulations texts for having found his mate.

‘Hey, I heard that something happened in your pack, I just wanted to check that you were okay.’

Of course no reply came, and it was not a surprise. Meeting a soulmate would make any werewolf busy.

Finally, I smiled, genuinely happy for Rudolph, telling myself that I would also meet my soulmate one day.

The rest of the day went on peacefully and uneventful, until the middle of the night, when at exactly 3 o’ clock my phone started ringing.

“Hello?” I mumbled with sleep lacing my voice.

“Well, well, weeeell! Isn’t the little Highlander chick.” It all sounded too loud for the time of night.

“Rudy! So you are alive.” I sat down and rubbed my face.

“Miss me already?” I was about to say yes but he sounded different. There was something wrong with him.

“Why do you text me so much? Hum? Are you that bored there? Or maybe your date was a total shitty shit?”

I wasn’t sure what to say to all those questions, neither if I was following, and I was starting to realise he was being rude. Ok, one at the time.

I ignored the inquiry about my date since it was not none of his business.

“I am a caring person, unlike someone else” I said, “I was worried about you, considering the news-”

“Yeah, yeah, I’m super fine, I use the toilet regularly. Never been better. Why shouldn’t I? And why do you care?”

I pondered my answer for a second and tried to figure out why he seemed off, but my sleepy mind didn’t help. “Well, I heard there was an accident in your pack...” I stopped, fiddling with the blanket.

“And how would you know that, Miss I-Know-It-All?”

I sensed some negativity, his voice becoming more aggressive by the second. Shouldn’t he be happy that he found his mate? Or calmer, at peace? Maybe she had turned him down or something? Or maybe she was under age?

“I’ve heard of it. We are in 2020, news flies.”

“Oh, by news you mean your losers friends that were going to do something to us? You can tell them that I had sniffed them all.” He drawled, his voice raucous... it reminded me of Caius, a few nights ago...BINGO! Rudolph was drunk!

“And how do you know they wanted to plan something?” I sighed, not wanting to talk to an angry drunkard with love problems.

“We do the same. But much worse and more innovative than your retard pack members, Ivana.”

I clenched my jaw so hard my teeth grinded together. “Ok, sorry to check up on you. I didn’t want to d-” but the immature prick cut me off, “Apologies accepted.”

Anger flared at how primitive he was.

“You’re drunk, Lucien" I said firmly. “Go to sleep, we talk another day.” Or never.

“As smart as ever, my fierce rabbit” He retorted with a flat voice.

Something in his words, perhaps the sarcasm, or perhaps the fact that he had interrupted my sleep for the umpteenth time, made me snap. “I’m not a rabbit and I’m not yours, Rudolph! You have found your mate, remember? So why don’t you go torment her instead of calling me? Huh?”

A growl came from the other side. “I’ll do just that then.”

“Sure, give her my condolences!”

“Fine!” He snarled.

“Fine!” I growled in return and slammed my fingers into the phone to end the call. Though I wished it were his face instead.

Damn Rudolph/ Lucien that had the power to piss me off with a snap of his fingers...or mouth, in his case.
