Today in St Louis the President announced the long-awaited United States Traveller project.

“Mississippi Traveller might at first sound like a book by Mark Twain but is actually when the US will send researchers back one thousand years to visit America almost five-hundred years before Columbus” he said.

The project will be overseen by the MIT’s Professor William Cowen, who explained. “Mississippi Traveller will visit the time scholars describe as the ‘Early Mississippi period’. This is a time when native populations are in transition from a hunter-gatherer way of life to developed settlements and agriculture.

“Across Central and Eastern United States, these peoples, who were ancestors to many Native Americans today, built massive earthworks and burial mounds and became quite numerous but they left no written records. We know so very little about them.

“This is a very dangerous era. With the lessons of New Zealand Traveller learned, researchers will use the latest equipment to monitor local populations without underestimating the potential violence the locals may direct to strangers.

St Louis Mayor, Frances Lay, welcomed the decision to base Mississippi Traveller in St Louis. “St Louis is a great city and we look forward to the knowledge and, we are sure, the jobs this project will bring.”

“We welcome members of the scientific and military communities to our fair city. They’ll be working closely with members of our university, both faculty and students. We invite all of you to stay a while. Build your homes here. Saint Louis is a great place for families, for your families, to grow.”

The White House announced that the selection of Travellers for Mississippi Traveller is already underway and will include famous American veterans of the British-based Saxon Traveller project.

We spoke to a few locals for their opinions on the news that a Traveller project will take place in their backyard:

“Wow! Traveller, here in St Louis! Nothing cool ever happens here in St Louis. Maybe we’ll see one of the original Travellers. I hope so!”

Oh man! My favourite is Paul Anderson, the Ranger who cut that Viking in two. I mean, man! That guy is bad-ass to the core.”

“I’m excited to have the Traveller project here because it gets the young people interested in learning again. Whenever a Traveller project is in progress, all of the students just want to learn about where Travellers are and what they’re doing. This is great news. I’m very excited.”

“The Traveller project coming to St Louis is good news. We need jobs here and need to give our young people hope. Yes sir, this is good news for all of the people of Missouri.”

“I’m concerned about how they treat the locals. I mean, from what the news tells us, they sure shot up a lot of New Zealand natives and, well, I certainly wouldn’t want that to happen here in our project. I mean, it’s their home, right? We have to respect them and do things peacefully.”

Details of the team members are yet to be disclosed but fans, history buffs and especially the people of St Louis eagerly await more news about this, America’s very own Mississippi Traveller.
