Chapter 23 Fiasco

‘He and his mistress got struck by lightning, and the whole city saw them completely naked. He’s too embarrassed to return. Now, the entire city is on the lookout for him. Unfortunately, he shielded his face when he fled, so no one caught a glimpse of him.

Zhang Ling furrowed her brow tightly, sensing her daughter’s innocence tainted.

“You should spend more time serving Mingrui at home. He works tirelessly for the family all year round, rarely taking a break. What’s the point of being a woman if you can’t support a man?” Old Madam Yang caught wind of Zhang Ling’s sarcasm and felt somewhat displeased.

“And don’t get involved with the matters pertaining to your family. It could lead to serious consequences.” Old Madam Yang shot her a stem glance.

Zhang Ling straightened up.

“What are your thoughts on this, Lord Yang?” Zhang Ling asked calmly.

Yang Mingrui glanced at her. “Naturally, I feel sorry for your father, but His Majesty is really angry, and he won’t listen to anyone. I can only do my best to safeguard our family. My love, you’re sensible. Don’t cause trouble for the family.”

He paused.

“As for Taojian’s matter, don’t be upset. He’s had a stroke of bad luck, and Miss Zhao is quite famous in the Capital. It wouldn’t be fair to hold her back.” His eyes flickered, raising Zhang Ling’s suspicions. How does he benefit from breaking off the engagement?

As Taojian’s father, shouldn’t he be humiliated?

Zhang Ling couldn’t accept this.

“Hold her back?” Zhang Ling chuckled softly, setting down her teacup.

“Taojian almost drowned due to exhaustion because of her. After being rescued, she hid into the mountains, delaying Taojian’s rescue. When Taojian was pulled out he was barely breathing and suffered brain damage, which handicapped him. Marquess Yang, Taojian was a bright child, praised by everyone in the Capital! How could you say such things? He was a prodigy!” Zhang Ling felt indignant for her son.

“The girl didn’t fall into the water intentionally, and she hid out of fear. Taojian’s fate is sealed; should we start a feud with our peers over this? My love, I’m facing difficulties in the palace. You should consider my situation too.”

After their marriage, Zhang Ling felt neglected by Yang Mingrui, so she often pushed Yang Taojian to study.

Taojian, at a young age, felt sorry for his mother, so he studied late into the night with red eyes just to make his father proud.

Zhang Ling’s lips drooped. “No one has the right to forgive anyone on Taojian’s behalf.

Yang Mingrui frowned slightly, noticing the change in his once gentle and virtuous wife,

She no longer held him in high esteem.

Perhaps, during this time of neglect, she harboured resentment and was intentionally seeking his

attention.

Yang Mingrui glanced at his displeased mother and shook his head gently.

“Fine, my love. If you won’t forgive them, then we’ll do as you say. He gave Zhang Ling’s hand a gentle pat

Shortly after, Zhang Ling used Yang Yuting’s need for milk as an excuse to leave.

As she was about to depart, she overheard a soft voice from inside the room.

“She insisted on you going there, and you ended up in a fiasco. Were my grandchildren startled?” Old Madam Yang’s words carried affection and concern.

Even a rare hint of discontent emerged..

Zhang Ling’s steps faltered slightly, and Hu Yue also caught wind of the words, her eyes reddening with

anger.

“Master Taojian is still lying in the mansion, and they’re concerned about the children outside

“Mind your words!” Zhang Ling glanced around, and Hu Yue reluctantly fell silent.
