Chapter 37: End of the road

Sliding smoothly and coming to a halt, Tom lifted his fist in the air. The place was filled with cheers from the soldiers. Theresa was frozen stuck to Tom, and she slowly lifted her head. She could not believe her eyes, they made it

“Toooooooom” she screamed and kissed him on the cheek

As the men cheered a van went past them at top speed, it was Victor, he was not going to go down without a fight. As it approached the cliff silence prevailed

“Son of a bitch, commander Victor truly is Rugal’s blood” commented Jacob

The jeep took off higher than Tom’s bike. There was no sign of fear on Victor’s face but what emanated from him was a blood lust like none other.

“Shit” Tom saw the jeep taking off and sped away

As he went he heard a loud speaker yell a name he had almost forgotten

“Long live El Diablo the Speed demon” and there were cheering from behind the speaker

Hearing this made his adrenaline kick in, he grinned and clocked the gauge. He turned to look and Victor’s van was coming on hard. He finally made it to the main road. Car after car, zombie after zombie her evaded them like they weren’t even there. Slowly Theresa loosened up and began to enjoy the ride.

Tears flowed out of her eyes as her heart melted.

How can someone I met a few months ago risk everything to save me, I love you Tom she hugged him tighter

“Here remove the pin, count to ten and throw it” Tom said handing Theresa a grenade

“But Tom”

“Just do it!” he yelled

She removed the pin, counted to 10 and threw the grenade. The bomb exploded impact but Victor evaded it. It sent the broken down cars flying into the air and tumbling outside the road. His blood boiled as he recollected the events that happened back at the camp. Tom turned and saw nothing was going to stop Victor.

Damn this guy is persistent he smiled and sped up

Theresa tried throwing the grenades but he was so good he evaded them all.Tom increased his speed and as they thought they were almost in the clear their gas ran out.

Boy you have earned my at most respect, finally a worth opponent the death I have been waiting for. If we go down today, we go down together he smiled and sped up

His car bulldozed through the undead in his way. Limbs and rotting flesh splattered everywhere. Tom’s bike started beeping as a sign of low fuel

Damnit,

“Shit, we were fucked” he said and slid the bike to stop it “get off, lets run”

Victor watched them stop and by the speed he was going, they were not going to make it. He could already imagine their destroyed bodies after impact. Tom held Theresa and threw her to the side of the road. It was just him and Victor’s approaching car. He opened his vest and smiled

“Check mate” Victor smiled

Tom seeing how there was no way out, stood awaiting his inevitable demise.

“Noooooo Toooooom” Theresa shrieked

The life of the most important person in her life was going to end right in front of her eyes. Tom prepared for impact and just as the car was about to reach them, it was slammed out of the road with such force it almost seemed weightless. It hit against tree with a bang.

“Miss me” Tanya smiled as she pulled down the window from the military armored jeep

“Phew that was a close one” Tom smiled

Theresa felt dizzy and collapsed in shock. Tom ran and carried her to the armored van. Just as they were about to celebrate they heard the engine of a car roaring and looked ahead, Victor was injured but still alive. His van seemed to also have been an armored vehicle so it sustained minimal damage. Tanya reversed and took off. Victor’s van followed them. They were chased for a long distance, Tanya was good with the steering. She evaded the broken down cars like they weren’t there. Victor’s van finally ran out of fuel and stopped, the tank had been licking.

“Make a U turn and go round back” he instructed

Victor sat on his hood taking a smoke. He felt at peace, it was almost like he had won. The sound of a jeep coming from behind turned his flat expression into a smile

“I knew you would come back”

He got of the hood and walked to the back of his van. From the woods emerged Tanya’s van. It stopped in the distance and Tom walked out and began to approach Victor.

“Woah thats enough distance, I wouldn’t want you to get caught up” he said and coughed blood

“Say it” Tom said with a dark expression on his face

“My brother Rugal, he got us into this mess. Please do me a favor and take him out for me. My last request” Victor said

“Why would I do anything for you after all you did for us?” Tom snapped

“A warrior can only grow when their cornered”

“What?” Tom asked confused

“You’ll understand when the time comes, goodbye soldier” Victor stood at attention and saluted

He smiled and dropped his cigarette. It ignited the leaking fuel upon impact and caught on to the car. The vehicles burst into flames killing Victor along with it. Tanya ran out of the van to Tom with a walkie talkie

“This is for you” she handed it to him

“Hello whose this?” he said

“Kid the move you made is a bold one but......it has put you and your loved ones in danger. I am telling you this because you earned our commander’s respect and ours along with it. Sleep with one eye open, you've made enemies in the wrong places”

“I'm listening?” Tom said boldly

“Watch your back kid, leave the country its no longer safe for you” said a voice from the talkie

“What do you mean? I don’t understand, who is coming for me?” Tom asked in confusion

“Ceaser”

“Who is that, I don’t understand” he protested

“You’ll understand when the time comes.” and the walkie went quiet

What the hell is going on? He thought and looked back at the destroyed van if only we had met under different circumstances rest in peace. You too have earned my respect as well

After paying his respects he went back to the van where Theresa stood facing down from shame and regret. After how much she had betrayed Tom leading to Jane’s death, it was over for her, Tom would never trust her again.

"Theresa" Tom said

“I know, I'm sorry it had to get to this. Thank you for coming after me I love you Tom. Goodbye” she said and began walking away when she felt a hand yank her back

Her body went and slammed into Tom's chest. He embraced her and said

“I love you too and I’ll never let anyone take you away from me again”

Her heart skipped a beat and a single tear escaped from her right eye.......
