The Purge
Chapter 28: Conleth

“I wanted to hurt him. To defend myself. To get revenge. To escape. But I didn’t just hurt him. I made sure that he will never again lift a finger against me.”

The Young Elites; Marie Lu

She doesn’t belong with him.

I know I was forcing myself too much to believe that she loves him and she will choose him. But I felt differently when she kissed me. It was the kind of force that knocked me off my feet and had kept my heart burning for hours.

She shouldn’t have given me that kiss. Now, the memory stung worse than a bee. Her kiss hangs on my lips like the gallows of a haunted place. It kept my mind busy. I’ve been awake for hours now—I think. It was a beautiful nightmare. So I got out of bed and I headed to the balcony of the Training Room’s third floor. The stars met me like an old friend. They smiled down like prickly diamonds, twinkling whenever they please.

I wanted to shut Bri out of my head, to just sleep and think of the war instead. But my thoughts were betraying me back to her. I saw that fear in her eyes when she said goodbye. Perhaps, she doesn’t want to be with me. Yet I still yearned for her. My heart ached to be with her.

I felt someone’s presence in the balcony. I turned around to find Fygun standing at the doorway. His eyes sharpened into thin slits of piercing blades right at me.

He finally has this moment to get me alone.

“You got lost, Captain?” I taunted but the air between us only became heavy.

“No. I’m exactly where I want to be.” He said. His voice was as blunt as thick glass. I looked down at his hands and they were a pair of balled stones.

The brims of his eyes were tainted in red. He wore his skin like ice; he was pale in the moonlight. He looked destructive and alarming. A demented wild animal set to kill.

“If you’re here to confront me again to stay away from Bri, I will fight you.” I said. I tried to harden my gaze at him. “I love her and I will never give her up.”

I know I shouldn’t be talking when danger lurks in the form of Fygun Hawke. But I will be true to my word. I will not give up Bri that easily. That’s what love is, right? When you want it, you have to fight for it. Or maybe I’m turning into one of those lovesick fools. Reckless and imprudent.

He sneered at me. “You talk like you own her. You piece of shit. She’s mine.” She growled. He’s using his broadness to intimidate me. But I refused to feel so low. I’m not the kind who easily backs down.

I felt my hands burn. That’s when I realized, I unconsciously balled my hands into burning fists. My palms glowed like embers as I tried to contain my stigma. If I’m going to fight him here, I’m going to fight him fair and square.

“Bri has the right to choose whoever she wants to be with.” I said as we started to move in circles, calculating each other’s move.

“She will choose me. She will always choose me.” he swung his arm at me. I ducked and punched him right in the stomach. I didn’t give him the chance to recover. I charged with a perfect uppercut and he staggered back. Blood oozed out of his mouth. He spit it out as he glared at me.

A mad grin crossed his face as he charged once more. I tried to avoid him but he was too bulky. He crashed into me and I landed on the floor with my head dangling on the edge of the balcony.

“You will never have her, fire boy.” He snarled as he choked me. The air slowly slipped out of my body. Bri’s face went in and out of my vision. All that I could think of was her smiling face, the one she had when we were on the ship’s bow. She was the last person I wanted to see in the last moments of my life.

“Bri’s mine.” Fygun said. I stared back at his bloodshot eyes. They were burning with anger.

Burning.

I reached for his arm, I gripped hard on his wrist and I burned his skin to the point he started shrieking and he lets me go. I healed and composed myself as fast as I could. In his rage, he charged at me. But I was faster. I kicked his gut. Once he stumbled back, I side swept his ankle and he lost his equilibrium.

Bri’s mine.

In my own rage, that’s what I thought.

Later then I realized what I’ve done. Fygun Hawke lost his equilibrium and he fell to his death.

I watched his body fall out of the balcony and shatter to the ground.

In my own rage…

I killed him.
