Angel was perfect.

I feel guilt at how I missed out on the birth of Rex and Elspeth. I thought being there for Angel’s would bring me some peace about it.

But it didn’t, it makes me feel more guilty. But not in a bad way. Because I know it means I want to do the best by them, by them all.

“Both.” Elspeth tries.

“You can’t have both.” I roll my eyes, but actually also feeling hungry enough for both too.

“But daddy I’m starving…”

“I can go, I need to get some petrol anyway.” Nate offers, as he sits on the armchair watching the kids film with us.

“You sure?”

“I’ll leave now, text me the orders and I have them by the time I arrive.”

“Alright thanks Nate.”

Nate heads out to get some food, which I was grateful for.

I was exhausted but I dare not admit it. What right have I to be tired when Evelyn had been so strong today.

Even with the new house built, I was still struggling to sleep. Dark thoughts enter my mind as soon as I fall asleep.

Dark memories.

Since the cave, it felt as if something was trying to get a hold of me… something was trying to claw at me from within. I won’t let it, my wolf already on defence mode.

I text Nate the food order, before placing my phone on the coffee table. I pull both Rex and Elspeth into me, tucking them under my wing.

“I’m sorry I wasn’t there at the beginning for you both like I’ll be there for Angel. But I want you both to know I love you all exactly the same.

That you’ve been the ones to bring me back to life. That I’d do anything to protect you all, to keep you safe.”

“Daddy you’re squishing me.” Elspeth chuckles as she rests her head in my chest.

“Sorry darling.” I stroke the back of her hair as she continues to watch the film.

“That’s okay Daddy. Don’t worry Rex and I feel quite lucky to have both you and Daddy Noah. We know that when he and Cassandra have their own baby, that baby won’t be ours like Angel is. But we will also love that baby just as much. If you were here we wouldn’t have daddy Noah also…” That was true, the moon goddess can act in odd ways sometimes.

“Yeah, it’s okay Dad. You don’t need to worry about it. A lot has happened since then.” Rex says as he places his feet in my legs. He wasn’t wrong m, a lot had happened indeed.

How did I get so lucky? I fucked up in the past, my own wife rejecting me and then dying in an attack on her pack.

Then four years later, I find not only is she alive but she’s given birth to two of my children. She had every right to hate me for the rest of her life. To spread that hate on to our children. But she didn’t. She never once passed that on to them. She always said that one day they would meet me and could get to know me. That she would support them with that.

I don’t think I would ever have been that gracious. I was a better man because of her, because of them.

How strong exactly was my mate? How perfect?

I know I don’t deserve her, deserve them.

But I’ll spend the rest of my life proving to them that I will never take their forgiveness for granted. This second chance they have given me.
