The Hunting
Chapter 1

Layana and Kia are twins, both turning eighteen tomorrow, however they look nothing alike, you'd think that they shouldn't be sisters, but surprisingly each took to one of their parents. Layana is tall, more curvy and has blonde hair with blueish grey eyes like their mother and Kia is shorter, slender, with deep red hair and green eyes, freckles cover her nose and upper cheeks, looking like the more feminine, softer version of her father.

"What do you think it'll be like?" Lay asked.

"I don't know Lay." said Kia.

"You think you'll find your mate in there?" Lay asked as she made herself comfortable on Kia's bed.

"I really don't care. I don't want a mate." Kia said irritably.

Layana gave a mock gasp. "You don't mean that."

Layana knew her sister very well, she also knew her sister was the complete opposite of her. Where Layana believed in love and soulmates, Kia was the more realistic one, always practical and cold. She took so much after their father, aside from the obvious height difference. Their father, Clayton, is a large muscular man, with curly red hair, a shaggy beard that hides most of his freckles and hard green eyes. He rarely ever smiled, except for at his mate and his daughters. He's the Beta of the Riverdale pack, second in charge and also the pack's Enforcer.

Which suited him, he was a strong and cold man to the eyes of the world. Only the girls and their mother knew of his softer side. Layana was soft spoken, calm and loving like their mother, Eliana.

"You know that I do." Kia said as she threw Layana with a pillow.

They both laughed despite the growing anxiety inside of them.

Tomorrow everything changes and they both have prepared for the future in such different ways.

Kia has always been around her father. She has followed him around since she was five, learning about his work, training with him. He taught her how to fight, how to kill. She was small but she was deadly. Layana never had the stomach for that, she tried a few times but always ended up sick or seriously injured. The fighting never stuck and she gave up and decided rather to just accept what comes her way, placing her trust in the moon Goddess to give her, her mate or at least a loving replacement.

At a knock on the door the girls both looked up.

"Come in" they said together, as they did most of the time with everything.

Their father stepped inside, bending over a bit to get in under the door frame.

"Hey daddy." Layana greeted with a smile. Kia only gave him a nod.

"My beautiful girls..." he said as he bent down in front of them.

"How are you feeling?" he asked.

"Fine. We've got nothing to worry about." Lay said in her usual cheerful way which earned her one of Clay's rare smiles.

He gave Kia a wary glance.

"I want you two to look out for each other in there, okay?" he said, his eyes lingering on Kia.

She knew he meant that she had to look out for Layana. Since Layana couldn't do anything to protect herself from anything or anyone.

Kia met her father's eyes and gave him a nod of acknowledgement and he smiled with approval.

"Give 'em hell!" he said before getting up and leaving them alone again.

Down the hall they could hear their mother crying softly, their fathers soft spoken soothing words of comfort.

"Everything's going to be fine." Lay whispered, uncertainty lacing her voice as she gave Kia a nervous look.

"You bet it will." Kia said, squeezing her sisters hand.

She knew she'd never let anything happen to Layana. They may be different, but Lay was her life and she wouldn't be able to live with herself if she let anything happen to her. She was going to protect her at all costs, even if it meant she had to die in the process.

They both finished packing up their stuff in silence, Kia could feel Lay's wolf pacing around in her mind, she was restless.

"Is Nora okay?" Kia asked her.

"She's just nervous." Lay said, giving her an encouraging smile.

Kia nod her head. "Yeah Niri is too." she lied. Her wolf was perfectly calm, sitting in a corner unmoving, watching the events in front of her unfold.

It was quite a shock to them when they found out that their wolves were also twins. Both of them being a golden color with one blue eye and one green eye. You could only tell them apart by their eyes, Nora had a green left eye and a blue right eye and Niri had the opposite, blue left and green right.

They both also shifted two years earlier than they were supposed to, on their fourteenth birthdays. Their father was over the moon with pride, since his daughters shifted before all of the boys and other girls. The wolves were strong too, being the fastest runners in the pack and the best trackers, which only added to their fathers pride.

When they finished packing they both sat down on the floor, side by side against Kia's bed. Lay leaned her head on Kia's shoulder and let out a sigh.

"I'm going to miss this." she said.

"Yeah." Kia said.

Lay got up and into bed first, turning her bedside lamp off. After a few more minutes Kia got up too, turning her light off and dropping down into bed.

"We've got this." Niri said in her mind.

"I know. I'm worried about Lay." Kia answered

"I know..." Niri said with a grim tone.

They were both nervous for their sisters. Sadly Nora took to Lay's personality a lot. They were both too soft and trusting. Nora was a strong wolf and she knew how to handle herself, but often or not she'd choose the merciful way instead of doing what was needed, placing herself in danger more.

"We'll protect them Niri." Kia encouraged.

Niri howled in her head and gave a threatening growl.

"Give 'em hell." Niri said, repeating the words Clayton has said to her so many times before.

Count on it. Kia thought as she fell asleep.
