Chapter 22: A man and a boy

Avery

*One month later*

“Thank you everyone for coming to the Christmas party!” I shouted.

“I’m tired. We are gonna go to bed.” Lilly said yawning while Katie followed her up the stairs.

I smiled. “You know. I feel like she ditched me for Katie.” I teased to Jake.

“I’m fine with it. I get you all to myself now.” He smiled as he ran up to me.

“Ah!” I yelped as he picked me up. “Put me down.”

“Nah.” He chuckled as he kissed my mark.

I felt a shiver go up my spine and I know he felt it because I could feel him smirk.

“Ew!” My mom laughed.

I stuck my tongue out at her. “We need to find you a man.”

She shook her head. “I’m too old for that.”

“Mom. No you’re not.” I said sternly trying to hold back a smile.

“Whatever. I’m going to bed.” She waved to us and walked up the stairs.

I rolled my eyes and felt myself being lifted up again. “What are you doing?”

“Taking us up to my room. What does it look like?” He smiled and pecked me on the lips.

“Kidnapping me again.” I teased.

“Aren’t you happy I kidnapped you?”

“Uhh.” I paused and looked around our room as he set me down. “Look at the lovely weather outside.”

“Ha ha. Very funny Avery.”

“I thought it was.” I laughed.

He rolled his eyes. “I’m gonna take a shower.”

I nodded and jumped into bed.

About 20 minutes later, I felt my eyes closing and the darkness coming over. But before that fully happened, I felt the bed dip.

I felt tingles and instantly knew it was Jake. He pulled me closer to him and put my head on his chest.

I pretended to be fully asleep even though I was pretty close to it.

I heard Jake sigh and he was playing with the ends of my hair. “I-I love you Avery. I always have and I always will. I was so tempted to say it after I marked you, but I was scared. I was scared that you didn’t feel the same the way, and I was scared you were going to reject me. I’m only telling you this now because I know you’re asleep and it was easier to get it off my chest. I don’t know what I would if you actually heard me say this. But I just wanted to say that I truly love you. I love everything about you. I love how you challenge me the first day I met you, how you ran away from me, how you stuck up for yourself. I’ve always loves you from day one. Please love me back some day.” He loves me?!

That’s all I heard before I passed out.

I woke up and noticed Jake was still asleep, so I carefully got out of bed and took a shower. Because of my singing, I lost track of time and got out of the shower.

After getting dressed and foci my hair, I walked out and noticed still sleeping.

“Sleepy head.” I mumbled and walked out of the room.

When I got down stairs, no one was up.

“Where is everyone?” I asked out loud.

I looks in the kitchen and saw the oven clock say 6:27 A.M.

Ohhhh.

‘Why are we up so early?’ Red asked yawning.

‘I don’t know. I just couldn’t go back to sleep.’ I said shrugging.

Mine as well go get some Starbucks coffee for everyone. I don’t feel like making anything.

‘Why couldn’t you go back to sleep?’

I shrugged. ‘I got like this weird gut feeling. Like something is gonna happen and my body wouldn’t let me go back to sleep.’

‘You are so weird.’ She laughed.

‘Well you’re apart of me. So you are equally as weird as I am.’

‘Pfft. I knew that. But you are more weird.’

I shook my head at her and grabbed Jake’s truck keys. Ford truck here I come!

I turned on the radio and I Want by One Direction came on.

“This is my jam!” I screamed and turned up the volume all the way.

‘Wow. Her thanks Red. Feeling the love.’ I mumbled to her.

A couple song later, I finally arrived to my destination. Starbucks. Coffee!

I hopped out of the truck and ran inside. I smelled the air. Oh how I love the smell of coffee in the morning.

“May I help you?” The boy at the counter asked.

I nodded and ordered for me and everyone else at the pack house. It’s a good thing I took Jake’s card before I left. I’ll pay him back though. Some how.

“Okay. I’ll call your name when everything is read.” He said with a wink.

“Okay? Thanks.” I said awkward and ran to a booth. Creeper.

As I was waiting, I looked out the window and saw a man and a little boy walking. They clothes were kind of dirty and the man had a scratch above his left eye.

The man had dark brown hair and brown eyes while the blot had light blonde hair and crystal blue eyes. The little boy looked kinda young, maybe 8 or 9 and the man looked like he was in his early 40s.

I saw their lips moving, but couldn’t hear anything.

‘Red?’ I asked.

‘Got it.’ She responded.

I stretched my hearing out and they sat at a bench that was a couple feet away from the window I was sitting by.

“I’m hungry.” The boy said holding his stomach.

“I know Tony. When we get a chance, I’ll get us some food. But we have to keep moving. We can’t let anyone know we are here. It’s not our territory.” The man said.

My eyes widen when he said territory. Are they werewolves?

I sniffed the air and I did in fact smell werewolves.

I shot up from seat and out of there before they got away.

“Hello? Excuse me?” I asked standing in front of the man and Tony.

The man pulled Tony behind him. I wonder if he noticed my scent is stronger than a humans? I learned that my scent is kind of the same as a human, but you can smell fresh rain mixed in with it. It’s probably because that’s when we found Red, was when it was raining. So it confuses many werewolves.

“Yes? Can I help you?” The man asked.

“Hi. I’m Avery. I over heard you guys talking. Are you guys hungry?”

Tony gave me a gracious smile and the man looked at me weird. “It’s fine. We were just leaving.” He said.

‘We can’t really let them leave because they are considered rogues.’ Red said. She’s got a point.

I crossed my arms and gave him a smile. “I don’t care. You guys look hungry so I’m not taking no as answer.”

The man let out a chuckle and finally nodded. “Okay.”

“Good. Let’s go.”

I lead them back into Starbucks.

“Luna. They are rogues.” A pack member pulled me back and growled slightly.

“Shh. I don’t care. Leave them be. Let me talk to them.” I said.

“But Luna-“

“Go.” I said sternly. He nodded and walked off but I could still see him watching them carefully.

I got them both waters and muffins to eat.

“So what are your names?”

“My name is Tony.” The boy smiled. “I’m 9.”

“I’m Avery. I’m 18.” I said as we shook hands.

I turned to the man and he sighed. “I’m Carlos.”

“Nice to meet you.” I smiled again and this time, he gave me a big warm smile.

Mine as well do it now. Rip the bandage off quickly.

“So why are two on my land?” I asked leaning back in the both.

They both choked on their muffins.

“Wait. Your land?” Carlos asked.

“You mean. Luna?” Tony asked terrified.

I nodded. They both looked at each other and looked like they were about to run.

“You run, I call my pack members. So please make this easy on both of us and stay in the booth and tell me what happened?” I said.

They sighed and nodded, but Carlos gave me a funny look. “Wait. You can use the pack link?” I nodded. “How?”

“Let’s just say I’m not human.”

“But you smell one.” Tony said.

“Ya. What else do you smell?” I asked knowing they had to smell the rain.

“You smell like fresh rain.” Carlos said titling his head in a confused manner.

I nodded again. “You are correct.”

“Then what are you?”

“I can’t tell. It’s a pack secret. Sorry. But we can start by telling me how you came on our land?”

“Of course Luna.”

I shook my head. “Please call me Avery.”

They both smiled and nodded. Carlos took a deep breathe. “Well. Where can I begin?”

“The beginning always nice.” I laughed.

He gave me a chucked and nodded. “Well. Tony and I come from the same pack. I was the beta and his dad was the Third in command. About a month ago, we were celebrating my daughter’s 18th birthday party when we were attacks by rogues. It happened too fast. None of us were prepared for it. And they killed our alpha. Our pack wasn’t big at all, so once they killed the alpha, everyone else just followed.

But my daughter and I made it out alive. We ran into the woods and we went into the middle of another rogue attack. We got split up and that’s when I found Tony hiding in a tree. So I took him with me. Our families were really close and his parents died in the attack along with my wife.” He stopped and looked down at his muffin while Tony had tears in his eyes.

“You don’t have to continue.” I said grabbing his hand.

I shook his head. “That’s pretty much it. We have been wandering from territory to territory trying to find my daughter. And we can’t find her anywhere.”

“What pack are you from?” I asked.

For some odd reason, this story sound very familiar.

“White Dawn Pack.” He said.

My eyes went wide. No, it can’t be..

“What’s….your daughter’s name?” I asked carefully.

What if it’s. No. She said she couldn’t find he dad. That he might not have made it.

“Ashe.” He said.
