Chapter 8

Return to Normal

Colin and his Beta left the next day, returning to their pack. Ben assures them that the first order of lumber will be delivered in under a month. Moon is just glad that they are leaving. At least that’s what she tells Ben when he mentions to her that Colin and Chris are going. Part of her is a little confused about Colin. Moon just wants things to return to normal. Now with the extra wolves from Colin’s Pack to help patrol, the Big Springs Pack has a chance to survive, and she feels like things can get back to normal.

The forty extra wolves would seem like nothing to any other pack, but to this small pack, the additional wolves seem like they are twice as many. The men and women that Colin sent are all unmated. A lucky few even managed to find their mate in the Big Springs pack. All the new people provide a rush of new life and new hope for the whole pack.

Moon is more than delighted to see the uplift in her pack, and so is Ben. He is far more relaxed than he has been in months. The attacks on the pack soon dwindle off as the rogues learn that the little pack has found help from somewhere.

The warriors even help take over some of the training of Moon’s pack members. While the new wolves haven’t joined the pack, they fit in well. Moon is just as relieved as Ben. Moon had been a little worried that they would all be as cold as Colin, but every one of them are warm and friendly. Things are slowly returning to normal, and it almost feels like the pack is back to where it was when Alpha Mark was alive. It makes Moon happy to see everything working out the way she had hoped it would.

“Hey, Moon, come in here,” Ben says as Moon tries to sneak past the office door.

“Oh well, I was just going out to… ” Moon was trying to think of a good lie, looking up at the ceiling, but she wasn’t fast enough.

“Nice try. I told you, you need to go oversee the delivery.” Ben crosses his arms, and Moon feels like a scolded child again. She is really getting tired of it.

“Why do I have to? Why can’t one of Henry’s men do it?” Moon is trying not to pout like a child, but she has no interest in going to Colin’s pack. She likes to stay home with her pack; at least they don’t call her wofless to her face. Ben just looks at her, knitting his eyebrows together. Moon rolls her eyes in frustration.

“Fine!” She huffs, walking back out of the office.

She knows why none of Henry’s men can go. They need to keep working. They still have more orders to fill for Alpha Colin. Ben can’t go because he is needed here at the pack as well. A small pack means everyone needs to pitch in to keep things running. Moon is just wondering which Colin she will meet this time: The one that seems annoyed with her very existence, or the other one that brought her her favorite candy, apologized to her, and wished her a happy birthday.

The next morning Moon is up before the sun and heads to the mill. Ben gave her the paperwork the night before. As Moon walks to the mill, she swings the thermos of coffee. Suddenly, she has a strange feeling. A soft voice seems to whisper in her head, but Moon can’t tell what it is saying.

Shaking her head, Moon decides to just forget about it. She hasn’t been sleeping well the last several nights. She figures her mind is playing tricks on her. Moon yawns hard as she walks into the mill yard and sees the three semi-trucks loaded with freshly milled wood. The smell of pine and cedar is thick in the air.

“Good morning Henry,” Moon beams brightly at the older man. He reminds her so much of her grandpa. She has always liked Henry.

“Oh, Moon good morning. I’m just checking one more time before I let these boys go. I have some more papers for Alpha Colin. He wanted to up the next order, so I need him to look over that order and sign off on it. I’m not about to have some Alpha tell me I didn’t get something right, so I want him to check every number and sign it.” Henry glares at the papers and then smiles at Moon.

“You got it Henry. I’ll make sure he signs it,” Moon smiles and he hands her the order. Moon gives it a quick look, and, indeed, the next order is almost twice as much as the first.

“He really wants all of this?” Moon questions.

“Yep. Seems he has big plans for his pack.” Henry shrugs.

“Well you are all set. You can ride with Johnny.”

“Hey Moon,” Johnny says, “Let’s get a move on. it’s a long drive.”

Johnny brushes his dark hair out of his face and opens the truck door for Moon. She climbs inside, and soon Johnny is in the driver seat.

“Here. this is for you. I know you forgot yours this morning, didn’t you?” Johnny lets out a laugh.

“Yeah I did. Thanks for looking out for me Moon,” he says taking the thermos of coffee.

Moon knows Johnny all too well. He spends so much time hurrying and trying to get everything done that he never remembers the little things for himself. Moon half hopes he finds his mate soon because he needs someone to look after him. If it was up to Johnny, he would just work through every meal.

“So Moon, have you ever been to Alpha Colin’s pack, Twin Falls?” Johnny asks.

“No I haven’t. I know it’s still pretty new. Alpha Colin started the pack all on his own a few years ago, and it has grown rapidly. I guess he plans to keep on growing. I know several smaller packs have joined him. He even took a few by force when rival packs threatened him.”

“Yeah isn’t kind of strange though? I mean why did he start his own pack from the ground up? Most Alpha’s inherit their pack. Why didn’t he?” Johnny questions.

Moon has been wondering the same thing. Alpha Colin is unknown to everyone. He just seemed to show up out of know where and start his own pack. No one does that anymore.

“I tried to find out more about him when Ben made the call looking for Alphas to make the deal with, but I couldn’t really find anything. Just that he has a brother Caleb, and Caleb inherited the pack even though Colin is the older one. It all seems a little strange to me. Gramps wasn’t fond of Colin’s father and tried to avoid dealing with him.” Moon muses as the truck bounces down the road heading out of Big Springs pack. Colin’s father was one of the Alphaholes her Gramps couldn’t stand.

The irritating voice is in the back of Moon’s head. Moon yawns again shaking her head to clear it. She yawns again and Johnny chuckles.

“I think you need the coffee more than I do Moon.” He teases her.

“I just haven’t slept well the last few nights. I’m fine though.”

Moon feels anything but fine. She feels tired and on edge. She has a nagging feeling that she just can’t shake. Something just isn’t sitting right with Moon. She can’t figure out what it is.
