Not My Alpha

Moon is nearly out of the water when she sees a flash of movement in the trees. She’s worried it’s the rogues coming to block her escape, so she moves faster When the sound of fighting wolves starts, Moon hesitates a moment.

She nearly forgot about the wolf swimming after her until she hears the splash of water and looks over her shoulder to see that he is almost to shore now. Moon heads for the nearest tree and starts climbing, wishing she was wearing more than her yellow swimsuit as the bark scrapes her arms and thighs.

She’s up the tree and just pulls her foot up out of reach as wolf jaws snap, just missing her foot. Moon heads high up the tree, happy that he can’t climb the tree after her. At least in his wolf form he can’t. The sounds of howls have the rogue looking in that direction. He most not have liked what he heard because the rogue that was chasing her takes off running the opposite way. A black streak of fur rushes past the tree, but Moon decides she will stay right where she is.

There is a loud yip and sounds of another fight, but it doesn’t last long. Moon still hasn’t moved from the branch she is crouching on, clutching the large tree trunk. Several minutes pass, and the woods are silent. Not even the birds are chirping now. Moon can feel all her muscles burning from her precarious place in the great tree, but she is still reluctant to come down. She doesn’t know who won the fight or even who that was. They went by too fast for her to get a good look.

“You can come down now,” the slightly irritated voice of Alpha Colin makes Moon cringe a little, wondering if he’s about to give her the same kind of lecturer Ben would. Moon rolls her eyes and starts the painful climb back down the tree. She makes it most of the way down before her foot slips. She can’t keep her grip on the tree; she falls the rest of the way.

Moon closes her eyes, shrieking a little, expecting to hit the ground, but she doesn’t. She is being caught in a pair of warm and solid arms. When she opens her eyes to peek out, Colin has an unamused look on his face.

“Um, thanks,” Moon chirps. “You can put me down.”

Colin does, but he lets out an angry growl. Moon looks around for more rogues, wondering what he could be angry at.

“What the hell happened to you?” he fumes. Moon is confused ’til he moves closer to her and starts looking at her shoulder and the large bruise covering it.

“Did those rogues do this?” he questions her, looking at her all over now, and Moon again really wishes she wasn’t in her swimsuit.

“Oh, that was from yesterday,” Moon replies, backing away from him.

She starts to head back to where her clothes are. Alpha Colin is still fuming and unsure of why. He has seen plenty of injuries far worse than the bruises Moon has. For some reason, though, it makes his wolf Farrell see red. What is with you, Farrell? Why are you so upset over her? Colin questions the fuming wolf in his mind. Farrell doesn’t seem to have a good reason either. He just knows it makes him angry.

Moon has already started walking away from them, seemingly unbothered by Colin’s concern. She even starts to hum to herself again as she walks. Colin can’t help but notice how she looks in the little yellow swimsuit. Other than the ugly bruises, he likes what he sees. She’s small for a wolf but average for a human. Her round brown eyes and full lips make her look delightfully sweet. The light freckles across her face and shoulders add to her innocent appearance. Colin starts to follow her as she walks. The view of her walking in front of him isn’t something he’s going to complain about.

The longer Colin watches Moon, the more aggravated he starts to feel. What the hell was she even doing out here? Didn’t she think there may be more rogues around? Farrell chimes in. Farrell only echoes the things Colin himself had already been thinking.

“Moon, What the hell are you doing out here alone?” Colin can’t take her humming and acting like nothing just happened. Colin had linked Chris when he first smelled the rogues and told him to inform Ben. Colin did leave out the fact that Moon was out here too, but he has no idea why he didn’t tell Chris. Maybe it was because he had followed Moon’s scent into the woods this morning. Colin keeps telling himself he just didn’t want to give Chris any more ridiculous ideas. The man is already convinced that Moon is meant for Colin.

“I told you I wanted to go for a swim,” Moon replies, shaking her head as she gets to the spot where she left her shorts and tank top, but they are gone now. Even her shoes are missing.

“Great,” Moon huffs.

“What?” Colin is now standing next to her, trying to keep his anger at the whole situation in check.

“Did you happen to see my clothes?” Moon asks, looking around.

“No. I still don’t understand why you would come out here alone just to go for a swim. There was just a rogue attack yesterday. Why the fuck would you even come out here alone? You don’t have a wolf and can’t fight off a rogue. You should have had more sense than to go anywhere alone. You are practically human. Do you have a death wish?” Colin regrets the words as soon as they leave his mouth. His temper is clearly getting the better of him. Moon looks hurt for a moment before she glares back at Colin, just as angry now.

“You aren’t my Alpha, and I don’t have to answer you.” Moon pokes him in the chest. “I could ask you what you are doing out here?”

That isn’t a question Colin wants to answer. He can’t tell her he followed her out here, so he just says nothing. Moon gives a sound like a growl and a huff, clearly angry at Colin, and turns to leave, just wanting away from him.

Moon is so angry that she isn’t paying attention and trips over a branch. Again, she expects to hit the ground just to find herself in Colin’s arms.

Moon scowls at him, “I don’t need your help or you to save me, you know,” She pushes out of his arms and puts some space between them.

“Clearly not,” Colin says darkly.

Farrell begins to scold Colin for being a jerk. You are making her mad at us and need to shut up, stupid! Great now his own wolf is chastising him for being mean. Colin is becoming increasingly more frustrated.

“You just need to keep to the pack house and quit putting yourself in danger,” Colin orders.

“You are not my Alpha,” Moon maintains.

Colin is frustrated and angry, but he also notices that Moon is cute when she is angry and glaring at him. No one ever argues with him. He’s the Alpha. His word is always final. He isn’t sure what to think about Moon and the fact that without a wolf, she isn’t affected by his Alpha authority. It’s frustrating and enticing all at the same time. He gives one last growl of frustration, and Moon mocks him with a growl of her own before huffing and starting the walk back to the pack house.

While Colin is frustrated with Moon, he isn’t about to let her go walking through the woods all alone. Clearly, the rogue problem is more severe than he originally expected. She glances over her shoulder at him and huffs louder.

“Stop following me,” she states flatly.

“Nope, can’t have you getting killed out here,” Colin remarks with just as flat a tone.

Moon just shakes her head determined to walk faster away from the irritating man. She doesn’t make it far from the lake before the patrol and Ben show up. Ben is first to shift and slip in the shorts he had brought with him. Moon is slightly deflated when she sees that Ben looks just as mad as Colin.

“Hi, Ben,” Moon chirps trying to ease the tension.

“Don’t you hi Ben me. What are you doing out here, Moon?” Ben is trying not to yell, and when he sees her shoulder, he’s more upset.

“What is that?” He says, pointing at the ugly purple bruises, the worst being her shoulder.

“I just wanted to go for a swim,” Moon utters the words, and Ben instantly hangs his head, clearly remorseful.

“Come on, Moon, lets get you back home. I’m sorry.”

Colin is confused as he looks at Moon and Ben. When he makes eye contact with Ben, the man looks sadly at Moon, walking with her back to the pack house. Colin can’t seem to get a straight answer from anyone today.
