Chapter 19

Leaving

Colin pulls up to the packhouse. Moon looks over at him. Her face is flushed from the wind. Colin resists the urge to brush the hair from her eyes. He mentally kicks himself for being so weak. Farrell’s obsession with Moon is clouding his judgment. When he opens his door, he finds Moon is already getting out of the SUV.

She is nearly out of the car, but she is still distracted, and her foot slips. Colin isn’t paying much attention, but Farrell is. He pushes to the surface so quickly that Colin doesn’t have time to stop him.

Farrell is more than happy to have Moon collide with him and even more delighted to wrap his arms around her. Feeling her close to him is all he wants, and he grins, clearly pleased with himself.

“Um, Colin?” Moon questions, but she is pretty sure she knows who has a hold of her. He just smiles and shakes his head.

“Farrell.” Moon can’t help but smile when he grins even wider at her. He is definitely not like Colin. Every emotion radiates over his face.

“Well, thank you for catching me,” Moon remarks.

Farrell puffs up a little, “I’m happy to catch you when you fall.”

Moon finds it hard not to giggle a little at the wolf. All too soon, he lets her go, and his face shifts to the blank unreadable mask.

“Sorry about Farrell, he’s…” Colin trails off. He can’t find the right thing to say. He can’t tell Moon that his wolf is obsessed with her.

“Oh, he’s fine. You know he’s so different than you are,” Moon observes.

“He didn’t use to be,” Colin remarks. “He’s become difficult lately.” His annoyed tone doesn’t go unnoticed.

“Well, I better call Ben and see if anyone can come and get me. Do you think the road is safe? I don’t want what happened to the trucks to happen to anyone else.” Moon shivers, thinking back to the crash.

“I have had wolves patrolling the area. They still haven’t found anything out of the ordinary or even seen anyone,” Colin sighs.

“Well, I know Ben is working on replacing what was lost to you.” Moon thinks that is what is causing his frustration.

“I don’t care about lost lumber; I care about who did this. I care that you lost three trucks and two men.” Colin is angry now. He rubs his face.

“I’m sorry. I just need to go for a run. I’m not mad, just frustrated.”

Moon nods slowly, looking at him. She wonders how much she doesn’t know about him. She thought he was like all the other Alphas she’s heard about, selfish and only concerned for their own gain, but he really isn’t like that at all. Moon can’t figure him out. One moment he seems mad at her and like he wants away from her, but his wolf seems to like her. Colin’s wolf has no problem showing his emotions, and Moon likes that about him. She also wonders if her wolf will be so different from her as well.

Moon doesn’t get to say anything as Colin turns and walks across the lawn to the tree line. Colin looks defeated. He walks away, and Moon guesses it must be the stress of not being able to find the ones responsible for the accident causing him so much distress.

Moon is heading into the packhouse when her phone buzzes in her pocket. Emily’s name is on the screen. Moon answers it in her usual chipper way expecting that Em just wants an update on Johnny.

“Hey, Em,” Moon smiles, hoping that she will be home to see Rosie soon.

“Moon, we are under attack, and this time it isn’t rogues.” Emily is whispering and the sounds of children crying come in over the phone. Emily must be in the pack panic room with the children and older wolves that can’t defend themselves.

Moon’s heart is racing. “Emily did you call any of our allies?”

“They won’t answer my call. I don’t know what to do; I tried to call Alpha Colin just a minute ago. He didn’t even answer.” Emily tries to keep her composure, so she doesn’t scare everyone around her, but Moon can hear how afraid she is.

“He just left on a run, but I’ll get him back here. We are coming, Em, just hold on.” Moon reassures Emily as her heart pounds.

“Okay, Moon, we need you to hurry though. There are so many,” Emily whispers so low Moon almost can’t hear her. The phone goes dead, and Moon is quickly looking for anyone she can make to get in contact with Colin. Poor Zach is the only one she sees as he walks across the common area of the packhouse. Moon yells to him and starts racing toward him. He looks like he wants to run from her.

“Zach, I need you to link Colin right now!” Moon stops in front of him. When he tries to back up from her, she grabs his shirt.

“LINK COLIN NOW! My pack is under attack. Emily just called me, and she said it isn’t rogues. She can’t get any of the other Alphas to answer her calls. Get Colin back here now!”

Zach’s eyes go wide, and he just nods as his face goes blank. He even cringes a bit.

“He says he’s on his way. We are getting as many people together as fast as we can. It’s going to take time. We are hours away from your pack, but Colin is already getting everyone together to leave as soon as possible.”

Moon doesn’t need Zach to point out how hopeless it is. There is no way they can get to her pack in time to save them. Colin comes rushing through the back of the packhouse. He must have come through the kitchen. He’s on the phone and yelling. Moon recognizes the name of Alpha David. He’s a creep, but his pack is closer to hers.

“You said you owed me, David. Now you can pay me back. You need to send warriors to the Big Springs pack before they are wiped out,” Colin orders.

Moon doesn’t know what David says, but it makes Colin growl into the phone. Moon thinks he is going to throw it. Colin then sees Moon and Zach together. He flashes a glare at Zach for only a second, but Moon still has ahold of the poor man. Moon lets him go, and he takes one step away from her. Colin stops in front of them in nothing but a pair of loose shorts, looking sweaty and a bit disheveled.

“Okay, when do we leave?” Moon interrogates looking at him squarely and crossing her arms. She is not going to be left behind no matter what.

Colin stares at her for a moment, realizing she is completely serious.

“David is sending warriors, and mine will be ready in fifteen minutes.”

“Great. I’m ready now,” Moon states.

“What are you going to do? Hit them with rolled-up paper?” This time it’s Zach, and he’s nearly laughing at her.

“Worked pretty well on you, didn’t it? Don’t you worry about me. I’m going, and I won’t be in the way,” Moon huffs at him.

“Just meet me at my car in ten minutes,” Colin orders.

“We are leaving, and clearly, she’s going, so Zach deal with it.”

“Yes, Alpha,” Zach says a little sheepishly.

Moon just heads back out to the car. She wants to call Emily so badly. She just wants to know what’s happening. Not knowing is the worst feeling. It makes her feel even more helpless and weak. She just can’t imagine who would want to attack her pack like this. They have only had problems with rogues, not other packs, before now. Moon just wishes Colin would hurry up. She just needs to get back to her pack before they are all killed.
