Voice

Moon is still dazed as she walks into the room, hoping her face has returned to its normal color. She smiles but blushes again when she sees Johnny wrapped in Chris’ arms. Colin gives a slight cough behind her, and Chris turns and beams at Colin. Chris is clearly relieved that Johnny is doing so much better. If the embrace is anything to judge by, Johnny is just as happy he finally found his mate.

“How are you feeling?” Moon rushes to Johnny. She is reassured as well that he is all right.

“I’m better now. I’m still a bit sore, and my head is killing me. I hear it was pretty bad for a minute.” Johnny almost sounds like he feels guilty for being a problem for anyone. Chris just takes his hand and smiles warmly.

“We are just happy you are okay,” Moon reassures him again.

“Johnny, I need to ask you what you remember about the attack. Did you notice anything? What about the wolves that jumped you? Can you tell us anything about it? My people were unable to gather many clues about the accident. Most of it looked like it was cleaned up or tampered with.” Colin moves closer to the bed as he speaks. Johnny is quick to try to answer.

“Alpha, that was no accident. I can tell you that much. From what I saw, the trucks hit some spike strips. The drivers must not have seen them and lost control. It also looked like someone got to them quickly because I know those men, and they would have put up a fight for sure. I found one man out of his truck, but they got to him before he even had a chance. It was definitely no accident, and those wolves were not rogues. I just don’t know who would want to attack us. We aren’t a big pack or anything. We don’t have any real enemies. We have only ever had problems with rogues. We are on good terms with all the other packs in our area. I can’t think who would do this or attack our trucks. It just doesn’t make sense.” Johnny is getting more and more upset as he talks. Chris gives his hand a squeeze.

“It’s all right. We will figure it out,” Chris consoles Johnny.

“Thank you, Johnny. That is helpful. I have people working on trying to figure this out. I will tell them what you told me, which will help them greatly,” Colin says, looking lost in thought for a moment.

“I will let you rest. I look forward to welcoming you to the pack.” Colin raises an eyebrow and gives a half smile as Johnny blushes and looks at Chris.

“I’m excited about that as well. I will need to go home and take care of a few things, though.” Johnny sounds sad at the thought of leaving Chris at all.

“Well, you won’t be going until you are cleared by Doc, and you won’t be going anywhere without me,” Chris playfully teases and boops Johnny on the nose, making Moon giggle.

“I think I will go too and let you two get to know each other. I’ll call Ben and let him know you are doing better.” Moon is still giggling a little as she watches the two. She’s delighted that they have each other. She can’t help but think how perfect Chris is for Johnny. He needs someone to look after him.

The two love birds don’t really notice when Colin and Moon leave the room, not that anyone would blame them. The mate bond is powerful, much stronger than any drug or brief infatuation of lust you can ever feel. Right now, the pair only really have eyes for each other.

Moon is reluctant to be alone with Colin after what happened in the hall just a few moments before. She doesn’t really know what made her say anything. She also doesn’t know what made Colin act the way he did. Moon knows it was Colin’s wolf she was dealing with more than Colin himself. She just feels confused about why his wolf would want to talk to her and tell her she was wrong. The more Moon thinks about it, the more confused she feels.

Before she can even figure out what to say, Doctor Lewis is walking back down the hall.

“Moon, will you come with me? I have your bloodwork back, and I want to go over it with you.”

Colin looks at Moon. “Blood work? What is this about?”

Moon bristles, “That is between Doc and me, thank you,” she says.

Before Colin can ask more questions, Moon heads down the hall toward Doc Lewis. The poor doctor is fighting to control his laughter as they walk down the hall to his office.

“You like to rile him up, don’t you?” Doc chuckles as soon as they are in his office.

“Now, let’s sit down and discuss these results, shall we?”

Doctor Lewis starts rifling through a file on his desk as he sits down. Moon doesn’t really feel like sitting, but as she pulls the chair out, she hears the voice in her head again, clearer than before.

I don’t like being stuck in here. Moon doesn’t get to ask the voice more before it’s gone again. Moon’s momentary loss of concentration leads to her missing the chair completely. When she tries to sit down, Moon lands with a hard thunk right on her butt.

“Ouch!” She shouts.

Doctor Lewis is around his desk and helping her up before she can ask. Moon can see that while he is concerned, he is suppressing a smile.

“Are you all right, Moon?” he asks, helping her up.

“Yes, I’m fine. Not the first time I have landed on my ass. With my luck, it won’t be the last.” She laughs a little, and Doctor Lewis smiles.

“Happens to the best of us.” He helps her to her seat and returns to his.

“But you looked distracted for a moment. What happened?”

“I heard a voice in my head. I mean, I have been hearing strange whispering, but this time I really heard it,” Moon says, feeling like she must be losing her mind.

“What did the voice say?” Doctor Lewis is clearly curious.

“It said it didn’t like being stuck here. But I don’t know what that means.” Moon looks at her hands in her lap and tries to figure out what the voice could have meant. It doesn’t like being stuck but stuck where?
