Leopold knitted his brows, gently prying her hand away. “Didn't I tell you to stay put? It's dangerous for you to wander off like this.”

Ever since she'd been tied to the bed, she'd slept straight through the night, immobile even when she woke up startled, resigning herself to slumber after a few futile struggles.

Aurelia felt a twist in her heart with bitterness spreading from her tongue to her stomach.

“Mommy, can I go play in Leopold's room?" William asked, looking up at her with hopeful eyes. Aurelia gave her consent with a nod, reminding the guards to keep a close eye on them.

She popped open a can of apple juice and took a gulp immediately after she returned to her room. It tasted unbearably sour like she was drinking straight lemon juice.

Every encounter with Megan dragged her back to the harsh truth, forcing her to confront the reality that she and Leopold were over.
