“I know, Mom,” Evelyn replied, patting her stomach for effect. Nobody knew about her fake pregnancy, not even her parents. She was not worried about being found out; she would be pregnant sooner or later anyway!

The ceremony started without any hitch.

A priest took the stage to make a speech, and then the feast began.

All the traditional rituals were skipped.

The Alcotts knew Leopold was not one for public affection, so as long as the formalities were observed, they were satisfied.

Leopold was distracted the whole time. He hadn't slept a wink last night. Ever since he left the villa, he had a bad feeling, as if something terrible was about to happen.
