Aurelia said, "Aunt Harriet, if you ever run into trouble, feel free to talk it out with me."

"I appreciate that." Harriet nodded, her voice a whisper of gratitude.

They chatted for a bit before spotting Charles strolling into the yard.

"Mom, Dad's back." Beverley said.

"I see him," Harriet replied, her tone flat, barely concealing her dismay.

Charles soon entered, glaring at Harriet, his face a stormy shade of grey, "I'm telling you, this isn't over."

Slamming her teacup onto the table with a forceful thud, Harriet retorted, "This has nothing to do with me. Even if it does, what

can you possibly do about it? You planning on killingto atone for your bastard's life?"

Charles was fuming, "I thought you were a compassionate and virtuous woman, but you're nothing but venom."

Harriet let out a scornful laugh, "All these years, I've turned a blind eye to your flings, but instead of reining yourself in, you've

gotten bolder, going from flings to openly keeping that woman. Have you ever considered me?"

"You have joined the Stirling family for a long time. Have you forgotten the family rules?" Charles snapped.

Cutting in calmly, Aurelia said, "Uncle Charles, the rules have changed."

"That's for the next generation, not ours," Charles shot back irritably, glaring at her. He knew Aurelia was siding with Harriet, and

the Stirling women always banded together against the men in matters like these.

"Regardless, respect is a two-way street," Aurelia continued, "The Stirling family doesn't allow a man to hurt his lawful wife over

smistress. Mistresses were nothing. Since when has the highborn ever given them any standing? They're nothing but maids

serving the lady of the house."

Beverley admired Aurelia's courage internally, and Charles was probably about to burst with anger.

Charles’ face full of anger, her words a bone stuck in his throat, unable to swallow or spit out.

"Aurelia, you're being unfair as the matriarch, showing blatant favoritism."

With a smile, Aurelia replied, "Uncle Charles, should I favor your mistress over Aunt Harriet? I don't even know her. How would

favoring her benefit me? There's nothing in the Stirling family rule about looking after mistresses."

Charles clenched his teeth in fury.

"The family rule forbids harm to any offspring, legitimate or not. Her plotting against my child is a heinous crime."

Harriet retorted fiercely, "What does this have to do with me? Perhaps that woman got pregnant by someone else and couldn't

explain it to you. Maybe she set a trap to miscarry and then blamed it on me, a two-for-one scheme."

Charles declared, "Don't think you can slander her and get away with it. Who knows better than I whether the child is mine? I will

see justice served and enforce family rule."

Harriet's lips quivered with rage, "Are you trying to kill me?"

"If I don't discipline you now, you'll only get worse," Charles grumbled.

Aurelia sipped her tea leisurely and said, "Uncle Charles, you're ready to condemn Aunt Harriet on the word of a servant. That's far

too hasty. Besides, an unborn child isn't protected by rights. Even the law wouldn't intervene, let alone family rules."

Charles didn't retort. He knew Aurelia wasn't truly backing Harriet but was securing her own standing. She had been ousted by a

mistress before, so how could she possibly spare these women any mercy?

Just then, Leopold walked in.

Upon seeing him, Charles said, "Leopold, you need to teach your wife how to be a proper matriarch. She shouldn't let personal

feelings dictate family matters."

Leopold wrapped an arm around Aurelia's shoulder, "Uncle Charles, Aurelia's right, you know. An unborn child isn't legally

protected. You should hang out with those mistresses, and don't take it too seriously."
