In her mind, Charles and Harriet had always been the picture of marital bliss. Could Charles actually be playing the field?

She hadn't thought it possible. Men really had no self-control.

Slipping an arm around Beverley's shoulders, she said, "Alright, we've shopped enough. Let's head out for lunch."

Out of sight, out of mind.

After paying, they left the store together. Watching Aurelia's retreating figure, Megan's eyes nearly bulged out of her skull. She

wished her glare could be as piercing as an arrow, striking Aurelia through the heart from behind.

In the restaurant, they requested a private booth. Beverley took a sip of her juice and leaned in to whisper, "Aurelia, about Dad and

that young actress..."

Aurelia interrupted hastily, "How could I ever believe Megan's gossip?"

Beverley exhaled deeply, "It's true, though. Dad really is keeping that actress on the side. He's got a sugar baby."

Aurelia choked on her drink, "Could there be smistake? Weren't Uncle Charles and Aunt Harriet always so loving?"

Beverley replied, "Life is long, and even the happiest couples can grow weary of each other. When they were young, they were

great together. Mom was young and beautiful, a real catch, so of course, Dad adored her. But now that Mom's aged, and Dad has

all these young beauties around him, it's hard for him not to crave svariety."

Aurelia felt like she'd been punched in the gut.

Is it really so tough for a guy to keep it in his pants? Do they all start wandering once their wives start showing wrinkles?

Would Leopold do the sonce she grew old and unattractive?

"Does Aunt Harriet know about this?" asked Aurelia.

Beverley nodded, "She knows. She's aware of all Dad's escapades but chooses to ignore them. I mean, he's just having fun, right?

He still comes hto Mom every night, and doesn't neglect her because of his fling."

Aurelia was reeling.

So they appeared to be in love, but Charles already had many mistresses.

Why should men have all the fun while the women just suffer in silence?

"Keeping an actress is hardly 'just having fun.’ Don't you ever talk to Uncle Charles about it?"

Beverley shrugged, "What's the use? He won't listen to me. I never meddle in his affairs."

"What about your brother? Doesn't he care?" Aurelia pressed.

"He's studying abroad. How would he know what's going on at home? Mom wouldn't wantto tell him either," Beverley

explained.

Aurelia felt speechless. She realized Beverley was rather indifferent about the whole situation, almost as if Charles’ infidelity was

no big deal. She seemed content to turn a blind eye, just like Harriet.

Seeing the troubled look on Aurelia's face, Beverley patted her shoulder, "Are you worried about Leopold? Afraid he might do the

sin the future?"

"No, not really." Aurelia brushed a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

Beverley said, "You're young, and it's natural for you to judge. But when you reach Mom's age, you'll probably feel the sway

she does. As long as a man takes care of his family and isn't too outrageous, like Fredric, that's good enough. Even if you swapped

him for another, it'd be the sstory."

Aurelia was in turmoil. She could never tolerate such behavior. She'd rather stay single than swallow her pride.

"Why settle? If it's not working, why not just divorce?"

Beverley replied, "Divorce isn't good for the kids. Especially for you, the lady of the house. Your son is the future heir. Do you really

want him to have a stepmom who could bear half-siblings to compete with him for the position?"

Aurelia fell silent.

What a mess. Reform of the family rules seemed inevitable.

"Are all the men in the Stirling family like this?"

"Not just the Stirling family," Beverley mused, "Any man with a bit of money and power has his playthings. It's in their nature.

They're simply not wired to be monogamous."

Aurelia pressed a hand to her forehead.

What a world. Being a woman was an uphill battle.
