"Alright, Chirpy, back to your cage for a bit of a rest, and we'll play later," Nina said with a gentle voice.

The little parrot seemed a bit reluctant but obediently hopped into its cage.

Kane moved Chirpy's cage to the windowsill and then, under the pretense of needing the bathroom, dashed out of the room.

When he returned, he saw Aurelia had driven herself home, her car sandwiched between the bodyguards’ vehicles for protection.

Kane was out in the yard when he saw the cars pull in. He sprinted towards them, eager to hop in, but a large hand grabbed him

firmly. "They're getting out, why you hopping in?"

Kane broke into a sweat. How did Dad catch up so fast?

"I'm, uh, going to welcmom and Kane back," he stammered.

Aurelia paled. How did Leopold get back so soon? She thought he wouldn't be huntil midnight. No chance of the kids swapping

back in the car now.

William climbed out of the car.

"Dad, mom's beat from the day, feeling a bit under the weather. Better help her inside to rest up."

Hearing this, Leopold let go of Kane and wrapped his arm around Aurelia.

"You should stay hmore, take it easy," he chided gently.

Aurelia clutched her forehead, feigning discomfort. "It's nothing, just a bit dizzy. Helpto the room, please."

Leopold, with his wife in arm, headed inside. William and Kane exchanged a knowing glance. They needed to hurry to their rooms

to switch.

But just as Leopold took a few steps, he spun around, "Kane, cwith me."

William felt his plans scattering in the wind. "Why?"

"We're going to take care of your mother together."

William was the picture of confusion. "Dad, you can take care of her. I really need the bathroom."

"I... I gotta go too," Kane chimed in, looking for an escape, but Leopold grabbed him, "Didn't you just go? What's up with you two

today?"

Aurelia quickly intervened, "You're the one acting strange, snapping at them. They're kids and want to play, not hang with the

adults."

"Why? Kane's always been a good boy, listens to me," Leopold said, glancing at "Kane."

"Kane, off to the bathroom with you, then cfindin the room."

William, internally fuming at the lack of freedom, begrudgingly headed to the bathroom.

Leopold ushered "William" and Aurelia upstairs. Aurelia's mind was a whirlwind. Leopold's behavior was off. Had he sensed

something amiss?

Even the best could slip up, and Kane, still a child, couldn't possibly impersonate William flawlessly. To the unobservant eye,

nothing would seem amiss, but to someone as sharp as Leopold, the slightest discrepancy could be a giveaway.

The kids needed to switch back, and fast.

"William, go play. I want salone twith your Uncle Leopold."

"Okay." Kane turned to leave, pulled open the door, and there was William.

Leopold approached, "William, go hang out with Skyler. Kane's fine here with me."

With that, he ushered "Kane" into the room and shut the door.

Kane wiped his brow. Hopefully, William could handle dad.

Meanwhile, William's mind was a stampede of frustration.

"Dad, I'm beat and wanna head to my room to sleep," he said, punctuating it with a yawn, the picture of exhaustion.

"Sure, I'll cwith you," Leopold offered.

William was speechless. "You've got mom to look after, don't worry about me."

"Your mom's a big girl. She can take care of herself," Leopold asserted.

William pouted, "Aren't you all about loving mom? Why do you seem like you couldn't care less today? You haven't fallen out of

love, have you?"
