Ch33 - epilogue

Sarah laughed as she clashed swords with an increasingly frustrated Creed as they stood atop a high breezy hill overlooking New Sanctuary. Vixen and human were working together, for the first time ever, to create a new kind of city. A new kind of society.

Creed let loose a flurry of attacks, which Sarah parried effortlessly. She could slip in and out of her Awareness now with ease, and it was no longer a thing to be feared, but a part of her that she accepted. Along with the hundreds of voices that touched her lightly and went on about their jobs. The Vixen, her Vixen now, were at peace, and content with their new Queen. After all, she had brought them back from oblivion.

“Are you quite finished frustrating Creed? You know he gets cranky if you beat him too easily.” Amil said as he brushed his mop of hair from his eyes and smiled at Sarah from the blanket they had spread out for the picnic.

Sarah nodded and raised Orna is a gesture of her intent to cease sparring. The panting Creed nodded and stuck his own sword in the soft earth.

“It’s an amazing thing you’ve done, Sarah. Turning your enemy into an ally. ” Creed said, almost panting with effort. They turned to look down at the partially complete buildings as a large Vixen buzzed by, carrying more of the strange concrete-like substance they used to build nests.

“I couldn’t have done it without you, or Amil, or Orna.” Sarah7 said with a half grin.

“Don’t forget me” Maximillian said as he trudged up the hill, still in full armor and walking as light as if he were merely wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

“How could I do that, you’ll never let me!” She giggled.

‘He is bearing unfortunate news’ Orna said in her thoughts.

Sarah frowned and gestured for Maximillian to follow her to a copse of trees a few paces away. They had all learned to accept her seeming uncanny awareness - given her knew eyes and ears as a Vixen Queen, as well as the unknown powers of her sword.

“What is it Max? Are the other human settlements still wanting to fight? Is it Sarah 5?” Sarah spoke tightly. These past six months had not been easy, but with persistence and hope, she had been slowly getting both Vixen and human to entertain the idea that they could not only cease being enemies, but possibly also work together. New Sanctuary was becoming that symbol of hope.

“No Sarah. As you know, crews of humans have been exploring the Starlight Hope for anything we could salvage, as well as the history archives...” Maximillian raised his visor and removed his helm. His rugged face always surprised Sarah, after knowing him as a machine for so long.

“Ok. Don’t keep me in suspense, Max.”

“They managed to reactivate some of the ship’s systems. Including the long range scanners.” His gentle eyes lifted to look into Sarah’s. “They’ve picked up something. Something at the edge of their range...”

Sarah bit her lip and closed her eyes. Instantly her awareness touched one of her Vixen drones. It took only a few seconds for it to confirm Max’s report.

Something was coming to Earth

Something big.
