Chapter 6

Joan froze in place, his initial intent to regain composure shattered when he met Carlos’s piercing gaze.

He had a hunch about Carlos’s identity, but what irked him more was Ashley’s current demeanor. She made no effort to resist, allowing Carlos to embrace her without protest.

Jealousy consumed Joan. Weren’t they married in name only? Why was she so compliant with Carlos?

Without a word, Carlos yanked Ashley’s coat off and swapped it with his

own.

When he turned around, his eyes bore a menacing intensity as he said, “Ashley is my wife. Stay clear, and if this happens again, I’ll deal with. you.”

But Joan wasn’t ready to back down. “Mr. Balton, is all this really necessary? It’s clear that Ashley doesn’t like you. Divorce is inevitable.”

Carlos frowned, his gaze locked on Ashley. “What’s your take on this?”

Ashley shook her head, replying, “I have nothing to say.”

Carlos didn’t push it any further but spoke in a lower, more menacing tone. “Whether we divorce or not isn’t up to her.”

Ashley felt lost. The man she had spent months with, day in and day out, seemed utterly unfamiliar to her now.

He was no longer the docile and ordinary man she once knew. Instead, he radiated a dominating presence and an indescribable tenderness.

Before Ashley could respond, an odd noise echoed from the ground.

Looking down, she found Teddy clinging to Joan’s thigh, trembling and behaving inappropriately.

Joan awkwardly kicked Teddy away, his face flushed with embarrassment. “I… I should go.”

As Joan hurriedly departed, Ashley couldn’t believe her eyes.

She had considered using Joan to pave the way for a divorce, but she had never expected him to be completely defeated.

It was beyond belief!

Before she could react, both Carlos and Teddy were already heading back.

Ashley hastened her steps, and called out, “Joan, your coat!”

Carlos, without glancing back, said, “Throw it away.”

Ashley didn’t comprehend. “What did you say?”

Carlos repeated, his voice even deeper, “It’s d*rty. Throw it away.”

Ashley stood still. “Carlos! What are you implying?”

Carlos retorted, “Can’t you figure it out?”

Tears welled up in Ashley’s eyes welled up, a cocktail of anger, frustration, bitterness, and injustice swirling within her, rendering her speechless.

Her nose tingled, and tears threatened to spill out.

She couldn’t help but wonder what had come over her.

After all, they were two people destined for divorce sooner or later. Did Carlos’s opinion even matter?

In the bedroom, Carlos lay on the bed, engrossed in a book.

He aimed to honor the marriage contract until its end, and he had no intention of being made a cuckold.

In theory, without the binds of marriage, he should have been at ease. with Ashley leading her life independently.

But seeing Ashley with Joan made him seethe with rage.

As the sound of running water from the bathroom ceased, Ashley emerged, wrapped snugly in a towel.

The bed creaked as she climbed in, and a pleasant fragrance accompanied her.

They were, after all, a man and a woman sharing the same space. Initially, she had been apprehensive, but she soon realized her concerns were unfounded.

They observed their boundaries, plain and simple.

With more than half a year of marriage behind them, Carlos had never crossed the line, not even a hint of physical contact.

Sometimes, she wondered if his thing could even get hard.

Carlos read while she listened to music.

They coexisted under the same roof, yet remained in separate worlds. Even upon returning to the bedroom, they rarely exchanged words. It had become their routine.

However, on this particular day, their familiar routine felt strangely unsettling.

Ashley rolled and twisted in bed, hoping to incite Carlos’s curiosity about where she had been and what she had been up to with Joan. Did he truly

not care?

Eventually, she gave in and divulged, “Mom filled me in on your Maredar Group ordeal.

“That matter is resolved. Joan helped out, but there’s nothing more to it, just a simple friendship.

“Even though I have never fallen in love with you, I do have my dignity!”

Whether or not Carlos believed her, she continued, holding nothing

back.

Carlos looked somewhat puzzled. What was she getting at? Were they heading for a divorce or not?

When he didn’t push for more information, Ashley turned off the lights and pulled the blanket over herself, ready for sleep.

Carlos sat on the bed, baffled. Finally, he mumbled, “Is she out of her mind…”

To Ashley’s surprise, his words didn’t anger her; they even put her in a good mood as she drifted off to sleep.

The psychological defenses she had erected in front of Joan had completely crumbled in Carlos’s presence.

At the Nantes Hotel, Jason Moore, the wealthy magnate of Nantes,

appeared uncharacteristically humble.

It was late at night, and he didn’t dare to leave or sit, displaying no hint of arrogance or impatience.

Every influential figure from Colmar who had checked into this hotel today was untouchable. Crossing any of them was a recipe for disaster. After his anxious wait, the elevator doors finally opened.

Jason greeted Jasper, trying to win him over, “Hello, Mr. Miller! How did Miss Hiller respond?”

Jasper kept moving, remarking, “Miss Hiller is unpredictable. Whether she attends or not depends solely on someone’s mood. We can’t make a decision now. Let’s discuss it tomorrow.

“In any case, the preparations for tomorrow’s dinner must be meticulous, regardless of whether she shows up or not.

“If she decides to join, consider yourself fortunate. If not, it means your luck hasn’t arrived yet.

“But no matter what, the dinner tomorrow must be impeccable.”

Jasper spoke as he walked, followed by the other executives.

Jason could only stay half a step behind. The gap in their status wast obvious!

Then Jasper paused before saying, “As for our cooperation, let’s talk after Miss Hiller leaves.

“Once we have this task sorted, we can explore further opportunities. Do you get what I mean?”

Jason wiped his brows, saying, “I get it, Mr. Miller. Thank you for the guidance.”

He personally escorted Jasper’s entourage to their cars and watched as the convoy disappeared into the distance. Only then did he slowly regain his composure.

For a moment, he was drenched in sweat.

These Colmar heavyweights were truly daunting.

But what did Jasper mean by that remark? “Whether Ms. Hiller attends

depends on someone’s mood? What?” he wondered.
