My Elf Soulmate
Chapter 8

After riding together for about an hour Paxton decided to take me to a large open-field restaurant that was apparently run by fairies. We took a seat at the table that we had been guided to and then a menu just appeared on the table in front of me.

"What would you like to order?" I heard a voice emit from the menu, making me jump a little as my eyes snapped open and were probably as wide as saucers. I heard a burst of laughter coming from Paxton who was still in his human form for some reason.

"It's not funny Pax," I said to Paxton with a pout.

"I'm sorry for laughing little one," He said with his soft brown eyes as he looked at me with a lingering smile. "Should I order for you?" He asked me as if he already knew that I was as lost as one could be when it cane to this menu. None of the dishes on the menu looked familiar to me so I just nodded and let Paxton order for me, Paxton just spoke to the menu and then it disappeared leaving behind a small barely noticeable gust of air.

"So what made you decide to ride again?" I asked Paxton as I leaned my head onto my palms.

"You are the reason why," He said sounding genuine but I could tell that the was more to the story. "Plus I didn't like the way that Indigo was looking at looking you." He added with a sigh.

"How was Indigo looking at me?" I asked him, not recalling Indigo having an odd and different look towards me.

"He wanted you and that made me uncomfortable." He explained with a slight blush as he rubbed the back of his neck, making me release a little laugh, poor Paxton was jealous. Jealous of something that I hasn't even picked up.

"I didn't take you as the possessive type," I said with complete amusement. "And you still have to tell how old you are. Plus I also want to know about your elf history, it seems like it might be pretty interesting," I said with a comfortable smile stretched over my face. "And I also would like to know why it is that you chose to stay in your human form today." I said still wondering why he didn't change when he knew that this form could be draining for him.

"Where to start?" He mumbled to himself, just as the food appeared in front of us and my goodness did it look and smell better than I had expected. To be honest, my plate looked completely normal with what seemed to be a rib burger and some fries but it smelt way nicer than it would have if I had bought it back at home.

"Start at the first question, or start at the question with the shortest answer." I suggested as I took a bite of my jumbo burger and moaned at the taste as it flooded my taste buds.

"I'm glad to see that you're enjoying your meal," I heard Paxton say and just nodded as I continued to stuff my mouth with food. "Okay so, I'm in this form right now because for some reason I just felt like staying in it for a bit longer. Plus I'm not feeling tired as yet," He said and I just nodded to show him that I was listening to him. "Secondly, elves have a bit of a rigid past, about 500 years ago there was a war between elves, fairies, witches, and all the other supernatural beings I suppose. Elves can make potions and we have magic, magic that the old elves used to use for bad reasons, the worst one being the poisoning of other supernatural creatures and the killing of the past king. Elves are regarded as evil creatures by some people here due to our bad past of harming people with our magic. The fairies and witches have the same or similar past so we mostly get along with each other." He continued while I just stared at him in shock, Paxton looked incredibly incapable of even hurting a fly when he was in elf form so to hear that his people were capable of being that cruel shocked me, then again I guess that everyone was capable of doing bad.

"Are there still elves that are still up to their old ways?" I asked before I tossed a fry into my mouth.

"As far as I'm aware, there hasn't been anything about an elf that has gone wild in the past 400 years." He explained.

"So am I currently under a spell or potion," I Asked fidgeting around uncomfortably at the possibility that I was I could be under a spell. It would explain why I was suddenly more comfortable around him and why I've grown so calm to everything.

"I would never do that to you," Paxton said with a frown and a look of hurt that I was even suggesting this, but it couldn't be helped. "Everything that you are feeling is natural, it's how mate bonds work." He explained.

"I remember that you said that the Fantasy app was mostly created to help elves, why is that and how do you know for certain that I'm your soulmate?" I asked him. "Why do you trust this app so much, when you know that it could easily be incorrect?" I continued feeling more desperate to know the truth even though I felt as though I already knew it.

"It's not just an app, Roseanne, it's enchanted, even if something were to be wrong with it, we supernatural beings have ways of knowing when someone is our soulmate. The sparks for one and the way that my soul calls out to yours cannot be mistaken as anything else but a soulmate's call to their soulmate." He explained with such soft sincere eyes, eyes that seemed to hold a bit of desperation. "Now for your question, yes the app is made to cater mostly to elves because it is almost common for an elf to be rejected by their soulmate when the soulmate is not an elf and this is mostly because of our past, but others are rejected just because they are elves." He said his voice sounding a little strained, with some sadness as he looked at his half-eaten plate. It made me wonder.

"Paxton, were you rejected by your soulmate?" I asked him and watched as his eyes darted up to meet mine.

"Yes, I was." He said with a sad sigh and an even sadder smile.

"Paxton, how am I your soulmate when you already have one?" I asked as I raked my hands through my own hair. I felt a little hurt, I felt as though I was being used as a rebound more than anything.

"Some of us are lucky enough to have a second chance soulmate Rosie, I promise you you're my second chance. I'm not using you, my feelings for you are only for you, they have nothing to do with my first soulmate." Paxton said as he reached out to hold my hand, which I left to lay limply in his. I didn’t know how to feel, was I just the second-best thing to him? Why did it matter anyway, it's not like I was planning on staying here forever or anything like that. It's not like somewhere deep inside my heart I was actually potentially starting to care.

"Can we please go back to your house?" I asked him as I looked at the remaining fries on my plate, my appetite completely gone.

"Of course." He said just before he pulled up a small hologram screen and tapped on something on it, right before we stood up and made our way down the path, and out of the field of the restaurant.

When we got back to the house, I excused myself and left a sad-looking Paxton as I made my way to the room that I had been staying in. I plopped down onto the bed and closed my eyes, wanting nothing more than to fall asleep and to escape whatever reality that I was in. After today it felt as if things had gotten slightly more complicated than they already were.

I spent my whole day in my room and only got out to eat, I just couldn't face Paxton and I felt like I needed a little space to think about everything. I felt myself attaching to him and trusting him and I didn't want that. It would only cause me trouble when it was time to go and that is something that I didn't want. I didn't want to be hurt. What if I ended up liking him just for his real soulmate to come back. I'm sure that he would choose her in a heartbeat. His real soulmate. It was just too much of a risk for my heart. A risk that I wasn't willing to take. That night I fell asleep with a train of thoughts raging in my head.
