Chapter 20

Maya’s Pov:

I watched his gaze fixated on me as he approached me with a huge smile plastered across his face. A playful look flickered in his eyes and I couldn’t help but wonder what might be keeping him in a happy mood. Technically I’m the one who usually approached him first but this time he was doing it instead but the fact we haven’t shared our wedding night still troubled me.

“Someone seemed to be in a happy mood,” a smile crept on my l*ps, as he sat down opposite me. His eyes still held that devilish tease in them and a thought popped in my mind. Was he going to say the one thing I wanted to hear? If so, then he neededn’t say a word because I was ready but still I couldn’t stop myself from asking. “Did something good happen today? You seem to be bubbling with excitement.”

“Maya,” he drew closer, taking my hand in his. My heart skipped a bit at his sweet gaze. His alluring eyes that made me fall for him from the start. I have always liked him from the start even when he was still friends with Aurora. I had wanted him to look at me the way he looked at my sister and as if the moon goddess noticed my unrequited love made my wish come true and gave him to me.

“Can you

ask your father if it’s possible to buy shares from my company?” He finally voiced out what must be eating him up on the inside.

“O….kay? But is this why you kept staring at me in that manner?” I placed my other hand on top of his and smiled. “You don’t need to worry about that…..I will put a word for you to my father. Your happiness is my priority but I’m afraid to ask why?”

“The company is dropping down more and I can’t seem to reach out to any merging company who would like to work with me considering the given state of my company.” Jaden was handling ten percent of his father’s assets which dealt with the production and distribution of tiles, and any other building materials.

“What could be the reason?” Out of curiosity I asked as worry etched across his face. He nibbled on his lower l*p and let out a worried sigh.

“Well I can’t tell who posted bad words against my company, against the originality of some building materials and now some of the construction companies won’t want to work with me.”

“What of Lee Otto Fraser?”

A surprised glint flickered in his eyes when I mentioned his name. His company is a good one and could help lift your company back to the charts. Why don’t you reach out to him

Jaden went silent immediately and it got me thinking if I uttered a word I shouldn’t have. He looked away from me and rested his gaze on anything his eyes could see. He had that farther look. in his eyes and I knew he was worried. “Ohh, don’t get me wrong,” I immediately added so it wouldn’t seem like I didn’t want my father to help him

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m still going to tell my father to invest in your company but as you know the

saying. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket so reach out to Fraser too for help.”

“You think he’d help without requesting for something in return?”

“What do you mean?” I queried. Puzzled at the forceful edge in his voice. He had that troubled look in his eyes. It felt as if he didn’t appreciate that suggestion.

“What if he decides that the only way to help is to give him my company. Like making him bet among the board of directors or worse, the chairman……I can’t lose to him again,” though he mumbled the last line under his breath. I heard it loud and clear.

Did these two share a history? Why the sudden change in countenance when I mentioned his

name?

“Just look at your sister,” he pointed out, returning his eyes to me. “He took her in place of the land your father mortgaged to him when he couldn’t meet up to his demands.”

Honestly speaking, he had started saying a word I dislike hearing and that was bringing up my sister in every conversation I have with him. He almost has Aurora’s name at the tip of his tongue at all times and the sound of her name or whenever her name was mentioned, it irked me.

“My father had no other choice but to do that,” I said in a bit of an upset tone. Watching the look in his eyes.

“Who weighs the worth of a person with land?” I didn’t know if that was supposed to be a question or statement but either way, I simply didn’t have an answer to it. “Shouldn’t he have demanded something else other than your sister? Also why would your father give your sister to such a man? A man with many bad records. Someone who didn’t give fck about people around him?”

He leaned closer to me, his eyes searching mine while I studied his face. A clear look of disappointment appeared in his gaze. A look that said he was more disappointed in my Lee Otto Fraser.

father than

“Aurora! Aurora!! Aurora!!!! Can you refrain from calling her name? Please.” I gritted my l*ps and almost slammed a fist on the table opposite us. “Why are you getting worked up over that? Why are you getting angry at the fact he took my sister in place of the land?”

“Because that was an absurd thing to request,” his comeback was a bit deliberate. “I haven’t seen. your sister for ages and when I did–only to see her being married off to him. None of his wives survived his marriage to them, do you think your sister will be an exception? What if your sister meets the same fate as the previous wives?”

“Jaden?” I called, my insides almost exploding. “I asked you to seek Fraser’s help not calling my sister into this conversation. It is okay if you don’t desire to work with him and I literally don’t care what he does to her. Like he said she now belongs to him.”

“Do you even care about your/sister?……

“What about me?” I snapped because I have had it. “Do you even care about me or just my sister?

Her name always graced your l*ps at all times, making me wonder if you married me based off on that I’m your mate and not because you really like me. Who am I to you?”

He didn’t say a word and looked away. He adjusted on the seat he sat down, harboring a frown across his face. “I was humiliated by your nephew at your family dinner but you sat there and smiled it out but when it comes to my sister, you jump to any given opportunity to defend her.”

“She’s now Otto’s wife, you realize that….”

“And she’s also your sister. She’s family…

“She’s not family!” I jerked up to my feet. This time I couldn’t contain the anger in me. My b*dy was heated up to a point I couldn’t restrain myself. “She’s not. She’s not my father’s daughter! She’s that woman’s daughter so I beg of you in my mother’s name to refrain from calling her name.”

“Maya… “He stood up and tried to grab my hand, I pulled my hand away from him. “I don’t mean to hurt your feelings. It wasn’t my intention to do so, of course you are my wife and not your sister. You are here with me now and not your sister.”

“Because whether she’s half sister or step sister, she’s still family. I don’t know why you have so much bitterness in you for her……..have you considered to put yourself in your sister’s shoes? Have you wondered how she must have felt, knowing she wasn’t gifted like others. She wasn’t able to shift.”

“Have you pondered how dejected and lost she must have felt……..

“My sister must be having hiccups right now,” I arched a brow up.

He furrowed his brows in surprise as questions masked his eyes. “What do you mean?”

“Her name is on your l*ps every now and then. You have called her name up to 100 times. Is that how much you like her?”

“Maya, what are you talking about? This has nothing to do……

“Have you ever considered igniting even the littlest feelings for me? Do you even consider me your love type?” I watched the startled and confused in his eyes. Either he didn’t know what to say or my fears were true. Silence flew between us and he wasn’t making an attempt to prove me wrong. His silence pierced my bones, shattered every of my being.

I tried. I have tried to turn to his attention to me. Desperately and with consequences of my actions, I had tried to pull his attention to me but…… little tears well up in my eyes at the profound truth. The truth I didn’t want to accept even though it was right there in front of me. My husband….. His heart belonged….. I couldn’t even finished the sentence within me.

I sniffed, batting back the tears in my eyes. I won’t cry anymore. Not in his presence. I wouldn’t give him that impression that I am weakling like Aurora. I took in a deep breath before asserting.

“I will talk to my father. I’ll convince him to help you out.” I whirled away from him toward our

bedroom. He hurt me deeply, beyond words could describe..

“Maya,” he grabbed my hand. “You are misquoting me. I’d like you to understand me a little.”

I yanked my hand away from him. “Your silence already gave me the answer I needed.”

I walked into our room, expecting him to rush in after me but not a glimpse of him. My insides. boistered with rage, I felt my skin on fire. I balled a fist and stared at my reflection in my mirror and right there, I saw her. She was smiling at me. Wearing that triumphant smile across her face. Her eyes ridiculed me.

“I wonder who is the worthless one, now, she came closer. Whispering against my right ear, her breath falling on my nape. She let out a cackle. “You couldn’t even get your husband to stop thinking about me and love you. What happened to all those years trying to sabotage me to win him over?”

This time she laughed.

“Shut up! Shut up! I said shut it!‘ I was raving mad. I was losing it. I can’t let hen. She’s out of the

picture. She’s out. “You might think you won but I promise you, I will put you in your place. I will show you why weeds are entirely removed.”

“Yet they kept growing back no matter how many times they are uprooted.’ An evil grin played on her l*ps.

“I SAID…….SHUT IT!!!!!” My hand was about trashing everywhere when something in silver container caught my attention on the dressing table. A face foundation. I picked it up, examining the product. Did Jaden get it for me? Also it was the face foundation I have always wanted but very costly after I saw some actresses and influencers advertise it.

Just then Jaden rushed in, harboring a startled worried look on his face. “What is it? I heard sounds of stuff falling?”

“Did you get this for me?……I showed the face foundation to him.

He didn’t answer and just stood there.

Just then my phone on the dressing table buzzed. I froze when I picked it up and checked the message that just dropped in and saw something that made me weak in the knees. My chest constricted in pain as I stared at the pictures of my husband and Aurora smiling heartily at each other at some supermarket or mall as he handed her the very face foundation in my grip and this was sent to me by Nora with a single message.

“Watch out for your husband.”

Fully enraged. I lifted my eyes from my phone’s screen. Looking at the man who is my husband. “Did you get this for Aurora?”
