She didn’t get a reply. Maybe he didn’t see it or it was a delay in the message Cornelia figured if she gave him a call, he should hear it, right? 

All she wanted was for him to be safe! 

But, when she dialed Jeremy’s number, what came through the phone was a cold, emotionless robotic voice, “The number you have dialed is currently switched off, please try again later.” 

He had turned off his phonel Why did he turn off his phone? A sense of unease quickly spread through Cornelia’s heart. 

She didn’t want to think the worst, so she kept reassuring herself that Jeremy must be asleep and would reply to her message when he woke up 

But such consolation was useless, the unease continued to spread, quickly reaching every corner of her body, making her hand holding the phone tremble slightly 

*Nelly, why don’t you and me go for a walk in the yard? Granny Rebecca had noticed Cornelia’s anxiety all day, but since she didn’t say anything. Granny didn’t ask 

“Sure” Cornelia quickly put away her phone and helped Granny walk towards the yard. 

The yard was a sea of flowers. It was springtime, and all sorts of red, blue, and white flowers were in bloom, a sight that could lighten anyone’s mood. 

Southern Peak was close to Riverton, but the housing prices were different. The best houses in Southern Peak were still cheaper than an average house in Riverton. So, Cornelia didn’t think Jeremy’s house with a big yard in Southern Peak was anything fancy. 

After a while, Granny Rebecca finally asked. “Nelly, is something bothering you?” 

Cornelia didn’t want her grandma to worry, so she shook her head, “No.” 

Granny Rebecca gently tapped her forehead, “You can fool others, but not me. What’s troubling you?” 

Seeing she couldn’t hide it, Cornelia confessed her worries, “I messaged Jeremy this morning and he hasn’t replied. I tried calling him and his phone was off. I’m worried something happened Granny Jeremy’s okay, right? He won’t leave me like my dad did, right? I won’t be unable to reach him ever again, right?” 

Cornelia had experienced abandonment too many times. Her mother left when she was very young. Her father died in a car accident when she was still naive. Her boyfriend left her during college. 

So, when she didn’t get a reply from Jeremy, it made her very anxious. 

Granny Rebecca understood and hugged Cornelia, “Nelly, Jay is overseas, and there’s a time difference. Maybe he just turned off his phone to sleep when you messaged him. Or maybe he’s just overslept because he’s tired. Don’t worry” 

Cornelia rested her head on Granny’s shoulder. “Granny, that’s what I’ve been telling myself. But I’m scared I’m scared something bad will happen to Jeremy because of 

me…” 

Granny Rebecca felt a pang of pain hearing this, “Nelly, your parents‘ departure had nothing to do with you. You can’t blame yourself for everything. Got it?” 

Cornelia murmured, “But if it wasn’t for protecting me, dad wouldn’t have…”
