Honeybee
Chapter 47

Chapter 47

The next morning Jason slowly awoke. It was too early to wake up. The sun was chasing the darkness away, casting a warm orange glow into the room through the window and curtains. He lay comfortable and drifting in and out of sleep, he felt good. But something was different, something was niggling at him. He lay there for a moment longer and then he became aware of his surroundings, the warmth of the sun, the orange glow, and then a faint sound. It would come in waves, slowing getting louder and then fading away. It sounded like it was coming from outside, almost like something vibrating. Jason got out of bed and slowly walked over to the window, careful not to wake the others. As he reached for the curtain, the sound stopped, so he stepped back and listened. The sound started again so he carefully opened the curtain and looked outside. There was nothing visible, so he reached over to push the window open. And then he saw it. He stopped dead in his tracks, half shocked, half amazed. Right next him was a honeybee, frantically buzzing around in between the window and the curtains, looking for a way out. Jason slowly pulled the window shut and closed the curtains and then went over to wake Amanda and the Doc.

‘Wake up!’ He said as he gently shook Amanda. ‘You have to see this.’

Amanda stirred and as her eyes opened, she could see Jason waking up the Doc.

‘What’s going on?’ She said, rubbing the sleep from her eyes.

‘You won’t believe this.’ He said as he moved towards the window. ‘Come take a look.’

Walking over to the window, Amanda and the Doc looked tired and confused.

‘What are we supposed to be looking at?’ The Doc said.

‘Here, behind the curtain.’ Jason said as he carefully opened it.

They both stared through the window, looking at the countryside.

‘I don’t see anything different.’ Amanda said.

‘Look to your left.’ Jason said.

They both peered left, and a moment later they both saw it.

‘Oh my god.’ Amanda said. ‘This is amazing.’

‘A honeybee.’ The Doc said.

‘Do you know what this could mean?’ Amanda said. ‘This could signal the end of the virus, the end of all of this.’

‘Let’s not be too hasty.’ The Doc said. ‘Show me a hive and I will have more faith.’

‘Its early days, but I believe this is a good sign.’ Jason said. ‘What do we do with the little fellow?’

‘Part of me wants to examine it.’ Amanda said. ‘But my gut tells me we should let it go.’

‘Agreed.’ The Doc said.

‘This is a good day. The start of a new beginning.’ Jason said, as he reached for the window. ‘Fly away my little friend.’
