Chapter 421 The Benefactor

Daphne briefly explained the situation listlessly, probably due to lack of sleep the night before. “I have to- pay off the loan within a week, or else the factory will be auctioned off. I listed my car on the used car platform last night and arranged a meeting for later.”

Lysander glanced at her bright red sports car parked by the roadside and asked, “How much could it sell for?”

“I’m in dire need of money, so I have no choice but to sell it at a loss. I bought this car for over a million, and it hasn’t even hit five thousand kilometers yet, but the buyer only wanted to pay three hundred thousand.”

“Why don’t you check if there are any other potential buyers?

“Not many people can cough up this much cash in one go. I’ve asked others too, but most of them need to apply for a loan. The bank approval process alone would take at least fifteen working days, and I just can’t wait that long.” Daphne downed a cup of coffee.

Aside from the scent of coffee, Lysander also detected a faint hint of alcohol on her.

“Have you been drinking last night?”

Daphne smirked, forcing a dry chuckle. “Just a bit. I was bored at home. The thought that I can no longer. be carefree and that I have to work hard to earn money to pay off debts is rather disheartening. It’s such a pity that all the luxury items I bought before have passed their return period. Otherwise, I could have returned them like Priscilla did to get some money

back.”

“Are you planning to sell your bags too?”

“Yeah. I’ve put them on sale.”

“How much money did Mr. Everhart borrow from the bank to build the factory?”

“Over ten million.”

“It still wouldn’t be enough even if you sold your car and bags.”

“Yeah, but I don’t know what I can do right now.” Daphne lowered her gaze. “In the past, my parents paved. the way for me, but now when I want to do something for them, I have no clue what to do. Hey, do you think Josiah would take a fancy to me? Would it work if I offered myself on your behalf?”

Lysander’s expression was grim. “What nonsense are you talking about?”

“Come on, I was just joking. Don’t look so sullen. It’s not like you owe me anything,” Daphne said.

She did feel indebted toward Daphne.

During her most challenging times, Daphne didn’t hesitate to lend her a hand.

But now, the Everhart family was in trouble and she couldn’t even do anything.

Daphne patted the back of Lysander’s hand. “All right. At worst, I’ll just work a bit harder in the future. I’ve lived carefree for many years now, anyway. I should at least do something meaningful while I’m still

Lysander said, “Yesterday, I went to see Josiah for another matter, but he refused to meet me and was unwilling to help when he did.”

Daphne’s smile faded. “I’ve heard that he’s been fooling around with a few women lately.”

“Yeah..

Daphne waved her hand dismissively “Ah, whatever, let’s not talk about this. Before I came back, my father mentioned that we owe Josiah a great deal for his private jet, Grandma’s life was saved thanks to him, so I must personally thank him.”

Lysander replied, “The private jet wasn’t his.”

“It wasn’t his?”

“Yeah, I asked him, and he said he has no idea about Old Mrs. Everhart’s situation.”

“He must be lying. Who else in Harborbrook could arrange a private jet in such a short span of time?”

“He didn’t look like he was lying. I think he genuinely doesn’t know.”

“Oh….

Lysander took out her phone. “Hold on, let me ask for you.”

She made a phone call to Howard.

Howard said as soon as he answered the phone, “Perfect timing. My friend was just asking about Old Mrs. Everhart’s situation today. She’s quite worried, too. How about you, Ms. Everhart, and I go to her place for dinner tonight?”

Lysander looked at Daphne, wordlessly asking if she was fine with it. Daphne responded with a nod of agreement.

In the afternoon, Lysander accompanied Daphne to meet with the car buyer. The buyer, having struck a great deal, quickly paid the money and urged Daphne to transfer the ownership of the car. Then, he drove. off in a hurry, seemingly afraid that she might change her mind.

Daphne watched the car’s taillights fade into the distance, letting out a sigh. “No wonder men treat their cars like their wives. I feel the rage of a husband whose wife has run off with another man.”

Without a car, the two of them had no choice but to take a taxi to the hospital.

After meeting up with Howard, the group hailed a cab together to visit his friend’s house.

Lysander asked, “What’s the hospital’s plan?”

Howard answered, “Your friend Priscilla heard that we had something to take care of today, so she personally came over to look after your mom. Four other caretakers will be around, too. I’ll be back after we finish our meal.”

Lysander nodded. “You should go home and rest tonight. I’ll stay here to keep watch.”

The look in Howard’s eyes softened, happy to hear Lysander’s offer to help. “We’ll talk about it later.”

Five minutes later, the taxi came to a halt at a place Lysander found uncannily familiar.

“Does your

friend live here?” she asked.

Daphne also recognized the place. “Isn’t this the same neighborhood where you used to live with Josiah? Mr. Thorne, your friend owns a private jet, so why doesn’t she live in a more upscale neighborhood?”

Howard explained, “She used to live in a mansion and only moved here recently. As people age, they often fear loneliness. She probably found living alone in a big house too isolating, so she moved here to be

closer to others.”

“I sec.

Howard led them into the residential area, heading toward one of the apartment buildings.

No one was more familiar with this path than Lysander.

She had lived here for over three years, and every day, she had to take this route to and from work.

It wasn’t until Howard led them into the elevator, pressed the button for a familiar floor, and stopped to knock on an apartment door that realization finally dawned on Lysander.

The door swung open, and Eleanor greeted them with a warm smile, seemingly anticipating their arrival. “Mr. Thorne, you’re here! Mrs. Guerra and Ms. Everhart, too. Do come in quickly. Madam Susan has been waiting for you all. Madam Susan, look who’s here!”

Susan greeted them with a beaming smile. “Welcome! Come on in!”

Before Susan could even finish her sentence, Eleanor grabbed Lysander’s arm and pulled her in, sitting her down on the couch.

Susan was clearly thrilled. “Eleanor and I spent the whole afternoon preparing for your arrival. Look, this is the menu we came up with! They are all Lysander’s favorite dishes!”

Lysander stared at the paper on the table, unsure of how to react.

Daphne asked, “Um… Mr. Thorne, did Madam Susan lend us her private jet?”

“Yes,

Howard laughed heartilys I’ve said, they’re my friends. Our families have been neighbors for decades, and Josiah has always managed the Thorne family’s business. We’re practically family. When I heard your grandmother was in critical condition, my first thought was to reach out to the Guerra family. But given the relationship between Lysa and Josiah, I thought it would be best for Susan to step in. After all, saving lives is what matters most.”

Susan sat down next to Lysander. “Yeah. Ms. Everhart, you’re Lysander’s closest friend, so of course I’ll step in to help when you’re in need. How’s your grandmother holding up?”

Daphne behaved politely when interacting with an elder. “Thank you, Madam Susan. My grandma received the surgery just in time. She’s currently receiving treatment abroad with my dad by her side.”

“That’s great! It’s good that she made it in time for the surgery. We can consider that a good deed done.”

“I’m truly grateful for your help. I wasn’t sure what you might need, so I brought some health supplements for you. Lysander mentioned that you have hypertension. I’ve checked, and these supplements won’t affect your blood pressure, so you can safely consume thech

“Thank you. Lysander’s friends are just like her, meticulous and reliable,” said Susan before raising her voice and asking, “Eleanor, what time did Josiah say he’d be back?”

Eleanor glanced at the wall clock. “Seven o’clock. He should be back soon.”

While they were talking, the sound of a lock turning echoed from the main entrance.
