Part 9

“Maybe I heard something in the elevator and got it all mixed up,” Kelly shrugged. “Let’s not dwell on that bad stuff, okay?”

Steven nodded and the two of them kept walking. Well, technically, three. I was there too, just invisible.

“So, you coming back after this trip?” Steven asked.

Kelly shook her head. “Nah, my family’s business is mostly overseas now. I’m staying there for good.”

Steven frowned and asked, “But you left because of a spat with Sabrina. Why move the whole business too?”

Kelly chuckled. “Come on, Stevie, you know better. Going abroad was my plan all along. Sabrina had nothing to do with it.”

Steven looked bewildered, waving his hands in disbelief.

“Wait, what? But at the airport, you said Sabrina was making you mad by acting like my new girlfriend,” Steven insisted, his voice tinged with confusion. “You were leaving because you were really upset back then, weren’t you?”

Kelly paused, then chuckled. “Oh, that? Just a little joke. I thought you knew I was messing around!”

A joke, she said?

That one sentence that messed up everything for me? Just a stupid joke from her?

Kelly noticed Steven’s odd expression and couldn’t help but giggle nervously, covering her mouth dramatically. “Oh, come on, you don’t really believe me, do you? It was just a joke! I mean, sure, I was a little annoyed seeing Sabrina lurking behind you like some sort of creep, so I thought, why not give her a taste of her own medicine? But you seriously bought into that?”

Kelly chuckled, teasingly poking Steven’s arm. “Hey, come on, aren’t you two supposed to be married couple? What happened to trust? You’re not seriously doubting your wife, are you?” She grinned mischievously, clearly enjoying her little game. Meanwhile, Steven’s complexion went from bad to worse, like he’d seen a ghost.

Amidst the night’s silence, Steven’s sudden aggression shocked Kelly to her core. She cried out, “Steven, what are you doing?” But his response was nothing but the grinding of his teeth, a sinister sound in the darkness. Ignoring her protests, he delivered another slap, his grip tightening around her neck, reminiscent of the terrifying grip he had on me that wedding night. I should have found some satisfaction in this moment, but alas, it seemed the fun was still incomplete. Would Steven truly go as far as to strangle her?

Soon, a passerby intervened, calling the police and urging them to return to the station. The police were incredulous at the sight of Steven, usually so composed, now engaged in such violence. As protocol dictated, they began to take statements from both parties. Inside the station, Kelly squirmed uncomfortably, eager to escape the situation. When questioned by the police, Kelly put on a smile and brushed it off, saying, “Come on, it’s not a big deal. Steven and I are just friends and we were goofing around on the street.”

“Goofing around?” The police weren’t buying it. “Your face looks like you tangled with a

heavyweight boxer. That’s your idea of goofing around?”

Kelly stood up, looking serious and declared, “Look, I’m the one who got hit here. I’m not looking to press charges right now. I need to go, my flight’s about to leave!”

The police officer shook his head. “Sorry, it doesn’t work like that. We need your DNA sample and fingerprints. It’s procedure.”

Kelly was adamant. “No way! I’m not doing that! I need to leave now! If you need anything, talk to my lawyer!”

She tried to bolt, but the police intercepted her at the door, cuffing her hands behind her back.

“Steven! Aren’t you in charge here? Why can’t you do something? My plane is about to leave……..” she pleaded.

But Steven remained silent, as if he hadn’t heard a thing.

Another officer turned to him. “Mr. Craig, what’s your connection to this woman?”

Steven replied calmly, “It’s fine. Carry on.”
