Fire On Fire
Chapter seventeen - Waves

We had been walking for a few hours and he hadn't said a word to me. I tried to start up a conversation earlier but failed miserably. He didn't even look at me. So he wants to pretend like nothing happened ? fine. I'm exhausted anyway.

We stopped to rest for the night.

I didn't even know where we were going. Here I was, following a strange man, through a strange land, feeling strange things.

Everything was so strange. But hey, isn't this the typical life of all young adults ?

Ace left to get firewood, I had to assume because he left without saying a word. I felt so unwelcome...and after a short time of feeling wanted...I felt so unwanted.

I found a soft spot under a tree and plopped down on my back.

I stared up at the stars through the extending branches and leaves of the big tree. The stars were shining their lovely colors. It was weird, sad even, that the world just continued no matter what was happening. The stars still shinned, the sun still rose, the waves still crashed. Even when everything was going wrong, everything was confusing, these things still happened each day. It was frustrating.

Somewhere between my frustration and my distant thinking I fell asleep, curled up in a ball under the tree.

ACE P.O.V

I came back to the sight of her sleeping. Curled up into a tight ball, she was confused, and scared, and I wasn't helping.

I left to clear my head, there were too many things happening, too many distractions. Too many emotions.

I tried to keep Ava away from me, but it was already too late. She didn't know. She didn't know the things I had done. Didn't know the kind of man I was.

I softened as soon as I saw her and I finally let my guard down. I risked getting captured again to save her.

I risked everything for her. She was a weakness already. That night I heard her scream. I formed a bond with her. I hadn't been attached to something this much in so long. It felt weird.

I didn't want her to get caught up in my world. She was such an amazing woman, I couldn't let her waste her time here, with me.

She was just following me. Blindly. Not knowing where I was taking her, or where we were going.

What if I'm a threat to her ? That's the thing, I AM a threat to her.

She must've known that, she saw the way I was that night and yet, she still followed me. She still TRUSTED me...

It hurt every time I looked into her soft brown eyes and saw how confused she was. I had to force down my feelings, shut down our bond. It was difficult because by the day it felt like it grew deeper. It felt like the current was too strong and I was losing.

But I couldn't.

I couldn't let her lose herself in me, or she'd be lost forever. I wasn't the type of river someone would want to take a dip in. I was a sea of unreleased emotion, crashing and burning over and over again.

I had to focus. I had to focus on getting to where I needed to be.

I had to focus on getting to my people.
