Fire On Fire
Chapter ten - Dark corners

I woke up with a pounding in my head but as I opened my eyes, I was met with nothing but darkness.

There were some words still echoing in the back of my mind, but they were jumbled up. All I could remember were the words 'He's fuel to your fire'

What...

My heartbeat quickened, panic rising up my throat as I reached up to rub my eyes.

My arms couldn't move and I quickly realized why, they were chained behind my back.

I tried to tug them free but it was no use. The lock was too secure. So I did the only thing I knew left to do.

"HELLOOOO!!!" I screamed out, hopefull that somehow, someway someone would hear me and save me. Then I remembered Ace. Ace.

"AAACCEEEEEEEE, HEEEEEELP!!!!" I screamed out again.

Growing frustrated, I tugged at the chains again and screamed louder "ACCCCEEEEE, HEEEELP!!! ANYONE!!! HEEELP!!!" I screamed out as loud as I could, my voice cracking at the end.

After hours of screaming the exhaustion took over me. A tight pain tore through my abdomen. I hadn't eaten in days I was too weak for this.

I just sat there on the floor.

I began to shiver and I pulled my knees closer to me as I leaned against the cold concrete wall.

"Why does this shit always happen to me ?" I asked softly, my voice croaky.

He's your fuel.

"Maybe you're just unlucky ?" A deep voice spoke out from the darkest corner of the room. Startled I sat upright. Guard on.

"Who's there ?" I asked directing my question to the dark corner.

"I'm no one, just a figment of your imagination" the voice chuckled.

I scoffed, retreating further into the wall.

"Great. Now I'm going crazy too"

"Hm. Maybe. But let us talk about why you're really here" the voice said.

"I'm unlucky"

"No. That's not really it. You're here because of what you did" the voice replied laced with humor.

"Tch. What are you talking about?" I asked, annoyed.

I'm tired, I'm confused and I've been kidnapped, I don't need this.

"Oh don't act clueless Ava" the voice chuckled again

"Do I really need to spell it out for you ?"

"You killed your parents" as soon as I heard those words my heartbeat sped up and anger boiled up inside me.

"You don't know anything about that" I said seething. You know nothing about that.

"Oh but I do, I know you started the fire"

"Shut up" I shot back, grinding my teeth.

"You may not remember but you did and deep down, we both know its true"

"SHUT UP!" I screamed out feeling my wrists heat up under the chains.

"Just admit it Ava. You did it."

"NO! I DIDN'T! I'd never..." I trailed off recalling the memory of that terrible night.

"Honey I don't think she's ready to know" my mom pleaded with my dad "No Julie, she needs to know" My dad paced.

I was supposed to be asleep but I sneaked down the stairs to get some water when I heard my parents arguing. They almost never argued... what could possibly... ?

Curious, I tipped-toed closer to hear better.

"She can't know she's adopted it'd break her" my mother cried out softly.

A pang of unexpected pain stabbed at my heart.

"I'm adopted... ?" I whispered to myself, backing away.

Hot tears rolled down my face unexpectedly. I didn't know why I was so hurt, it was not like they treated me bad. Or made me feel different or unwanted.

I backed up into one of mom's expensive vases. It fell down with a loud shatter, the small pieces of glass scattered all over the tiled floor.

The arguing stopped and I heard my parent's footsteps getting closer. My mom walked into the hall, my dad close behind her.

"Honey-" Mom reached out, I stepped back.

"No-" I said, stepping back further. Mom looked hurt, tears at the corners of her eyes, her nose red and her hands trembling.

Dad stayed behind her, his face grim.

I felt anger start to coil at the base of my belly, like a little flame that only grew bigger and bigger when all my parents did was stare at me.

"You..." I whispered under my breath my anger burning.

"Honey we-" My mom started but I interrupted her.

"YOU LIED" I seethed, the fire now extending out towards the rest of my body, from the hairs on my head to the tips of my fingers and toes.

That was the last thing I remembered from that night, that sensation, then everything went black. The next thing I knew I was in a hospital bed, surrounded by tubes and machines being told that my parents had died in a fire.

I shut my eyes tight as the memories came rushing back.

Tears streamed down my face and I started crying.

It WAS my fault... I just didn't want to accept it, that anger I felt towards them...I...I murdered them...I KILLED my parents...

He's your fuel.

I hung my head low, feeling all emotion and energy drain from me.
