Chapter 20

Farren’s POV s POV

“Your husband is quite attractive. Seeing him, I can understand why you would settle for someone like him. But aren’t you ashamed to bring a nob*dy into this family?”

Katrine’s booming voice caught the attention of everyone at the party. Suddenly, a buzzing noise filled the air, resembling a swarm of bees around a flower.

As I observed Katrine’s smug expression while uttering those words, it became evident

However, I believe she made a miscalculation. I knew Alaric wouldn’t tolerate such disrespect towards him. After all, he’s conceited and self-centered.

So, I patiently waited for Alaric to stand up for himself. But…

“It was nice to see my wife’s family. I am Al.”

To my surprise, he simply introduced himself as “Al” and mentioned how nice it was to see my family.

What?

Confused, I glanced at Alaric, who was behaving quite differently from his usual self. Why did he allow Katrine to mock him like that?

“Haha!” Katrine scoffed. “Al? I’ve never heard of that name before. Farren, you really are

foolish. With the inheritance from Grandfather, you should have chosen a bette

husband

Her words irritated me, so I couldn’t resist correcting her, “Don’t refer to my Grandpa as your Grandpa.”

“Oh, come on, Farren,” she waved her hand dismissively. “There’s no need to be possessive over a deceased man,”

“KATRINE,” I snapped, gritting my teeth.

Katrine only laughed at me, finding my anger amusing. “Anyway, I’ll do you and your husband a favor. You only need to listen to my request, and that is to just go and give the inheritance that your father wanted to receive. Then leave with your handsome yet useless husband. That way, you’ll stop embarrassing yourself.”

“She can’t leave just yet, another voice chimed in.

When I turned my head, there was Julie, my stepmother. Or should I say, my father’s

mistress before he divorced my mother?

Dressed in a luxurious fur coat, strutting in a revealing outfit and bold red l*pstick, Julie approached. She took a sip of her wine before giving me a scrutinizing look from head.

to toe.

“You look stunning, Farren,” she complimented, though her words lacked sincerity. “You still manage to make yourself presentable even while busy calling the police.”

I clenched my fists, enraged by the venomous words coming out of that woman’s mouth.

“What do you mean by calling the police, Mom?” Katrine asked.

Julie chuckled and replied, “Oh, my dear, you know I’ve given Farren some ‘gifts’ before.” She glanced at me and inquired, “So, how did you like my ‘gift”?”

She was referring to hiring someone to stalk and threaten me.

“I was really looking forward to seeing you take action. But unfortunately, you did nothing.” Julie uttered. “You are exceptionally boring, my dear child.”

Julie was aware that I couldn’t be honest with the police because of my stepbrother, Dominic. He was the only one I was concerned about. If Julie ended up in prison, it would affect Dominic. He had to complete his entrance exam first.

Speaking of Dominic, I couldn’t find him anywhere.

“Where’s Dominic?” I inquired.

Katrine responded, “Why? Are you looking for him because you want someone to support you? Unfortunately, Dominic is out of town. He didn’t even know that you were invited to this party. I don’t want someone like him defending you.”

“Oh, come on, don’t be so harsh on your sister,” Julie intervened. “She even came here with her husband. Show some respect, Katrine,” she sarcastically added.

“Right,” Katrine agreed. “You took your time to bring your husband along. I guess you needed someon

to protect you. But unfortunately, Farren, you brought the wrong

guy.”

“What do you mean, my daughter?” Julie asked Katrine.

“I mean, her husband is good-looking. But he’s nob*dy important. What was your name again?” Katrine turned her head towards Alaric.

I heard Alaric’s voice from behind me. “Al. I’m Farren’s husband, Al.”

“I’ve never heard of you.” Julie remarked. “What do you do for a living? Where did you study?”

I glanced at Alaric but to my disappointment, he didn’t say anything. He just lowered

gaze and pursed his l*ps tightly.

I couldn’t believe he chose to be modest at a time like this.

Regardless. I didn’t bring him here to show off his status. If he wanted them to continue mocking him like this, then he shouldn’t blame me in the future.

“Oh my goodness,” Julie gasped. “Did you just randomly pick someone off the street to marry? You shouldn’t do that, Farren. You’ll have to share your inheritance with the man you marry. You should choose wisely! She gave Alaric a mocking stare before adding, “Who knows? This handsome guy might have married you for your money.

I’ve had it with their nonsense. And since Alaric doesn’t seem to have any intention of defending himself. I might as well make this unwanted reunion quick.

“Whoever I married has nothing to do with any of you. 1 handle my own life, and you handle yours. If you keep meddling with me. I won’t just sit back.” I stated.

Julie and Katrine exchanged glances. They chuckled menacingly like second-rate

villains.

“Are you threatening us?” Katrine questioned.

“You shouldn’t do that, Julie chimed in. Right now, you should be the one feeling anxious. After all, I know what you did behind your husband’s back”

There was a sudden ringing in my ears, catching my attention. Julie had just said something that completely went over my head.

“I have no clue what you’re trying to say,” I admitted.

Julie flashed a mischievous grin and raised her hand. With a quick flick of her finger, a man in a suit appeared and handed her an envelope.

“Why don’t you take a look for yourself, Mr. Al?” Julie said teasingly before passing me the envelope.

I observed as she handed the envelope to my husband, Alaric. He glanced at me briefly before opening it and reading its contents.

As his eyes widened in surprise, he turned to look at me.

What on earth did they show him?

Intrigued, I snat ched what he was holding. It turned out to be a photograph. And as soon as I saw what was captured in the picture, my eyes widened in surprise.

It was a snapshot of Max and me inside the coffee shop, taken by my stepmother and stepsister. We were both smiling at each other while enjoying our coffee.

Suddenly, Julic approached and remarked, “You must be so proud to bring your husband here despite having an affair.”
