Dweller
Chapter 13

I had now been in this city for a couple of days once I finally ditched the merchants group. I had learned I was in the city called Wohlstand, Which stands for prosperity. Such a cliché, name for this place as it seems to be anything but that. There are always people fighting amongst themselves, over stupid things or just having a drunk squabble.

The city was beautiful however, hanging lights covered the sky, the lights illuminated beautifully at night. The lights were strung from house to house. As they were different colors it caused a beautiful fusion of colors. At night only couples were out in the lovey dovey setting having the time of their life. Forgetting about the kids that slept home. Even with the beautiful hanging lights the unlit and dangerous parts of the city still remain, they are filled with pickpockets and other mysterious people whose only job is to ruin your day. They lurked in the dark zones in between the houses waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

Most of the houses were wooden cottages. They were small and were very close together with thin roads in between leaving only enough space for a singular cart to pass between them. The houses had bright chimneys and their doors and windows were always open during the day. Their small spherical windows made the box-like structures feel less flat. All of the houses were the same as you got further in the city the better they got but not by much.

Children roamed the streets laughing and playing. They kicked with a pedal or a round like object instead of a ball. In some places you could even see children working excitedly to get paid and show it off to their families.

People were getting pick pocketed left and right. They were slick and hard to notice. You would hardly even notice them coming. Eventually it happened to me. Lucky me. I somewhat listened to the girl from a couple of days ago, hiding some things from me. I hid my most valuable things, for protection.

As I was walking to get from one market to another, I had to travel between two houses and an out of the way alley. I got pushed into a clay stone brick wall. Two older looking boys were behind the one that held me down. His breath reeked. His hand securely on my shoulder caused me to not be able to move.

“What's a pretty girl like you doing wandering around all alone like this.” He says trying to sound all so nice.

“Oh you know, going shopping for mommy.” I say trying to play along with the innocent little girl act. They were not going to play nice I could tell and I was ready to put up a fight. Over the last couple of days I had gotten a basic understanding of how to fight and I would if I had too.

He took his hand off of my shoulder and ripped off my backpack causing the whiplash of the action to bang my head against the wall. I fell to my knees as the pain swarmed me. They opened up my backpack and tipped it upside down causing everything to fall out.

They were talking to each other, but my head was ringing and was too dizzy to try and comprehend what they were saying. Finally they took one of my daggers that I left in there finding it hard to be able to hide that one somewhere.

They then graded the last couple coins I had and the food I had bought and ran off, leaving me almost passed out and with my stuff all over the floor. I kept my back against the brown brick wall trying to stop the head blistering pain, once it subsided I slowly crawled over and picked everything up. I barely had anything left, only my extra clothes and my journal now remained. I needed a small bag, something I could easily hide.

I slowly got up wiping off the dirt on my knees and headed to the market that I originally tried to get to. I went to a tailor's store and entered. I looked around until I saw the woman working, I walked over to her.

She had on a long green dress with a small arpen that covered the front of her. She was a bigger sized woman with long curly black hair, her brown eyes looked at me as I approached her.

“What can I do for you hunny.” She said in a sweet voice.

“I need money.” I stated as I did I handed her my old clothes.

The clothes were on the nicer side but not too nice that they would draw attention to them. They were a pair of brown overalls with a blue shirt that had a flower on it. There were also a pair of shorts there.

She gently grabbed the pair of clothes she looked at me before she grabbed the glasses off her head. She pulled them down to her eyes and looked at the clothes one by one. Once she was done expecting them she folded them nicely together, stood up and waved for me to follow her. I complayed and followed her behind a high counter only to come back around a few minutes later.

“Are you sure you want to sell those clothes hun, they seem like a really nice pair.”She asked, not even asking if they were actually mine.

I nodded my head answering her question, and she handed me a bag of coins. I asked for directions and thanked her before leaving the store. I looked around at all of the different vendors before I came across the one I was looking for. It was covered in different flashy bags that women would buy.

I was stranded on my tippy toes and peered over the counter. The man behind the stall looked at me with disgust. He was reading a newspaper, he didn’t pay attention to my presence and continued on with what he was doing.

I looked around for a bag that would be for what I was wanting, all of the bags that were on display were big and flashy, not what I was looking for. I walked away from the stall and kept walking down the market trying to find something else that could be useful instead knowing that I wasn’t going to be able to find an appropriate bag.

It was starting to get late, people were clearing the streets, and entering their homes for dinner then bed. I looked for a suitable and easy place to hide and look at the stars for the night. I saw the perfect spot on a nearby roof. I walked over and climbed up. I was above the hanging lights and could openly see the stars. Traveling the roofs of these buildings had been my speciality. It was amazing and very relaxing to walk on top of them late at night. I layed on my back and watched as darkness consumed the sky.
