Nothing Lasts Forever

A long, long time, in the far future, in a small wood cabin, located on the outskirts of the city of Haven, on the Eastern Continent. An elderly Roisin is sat by the fire, next to an old looking Dex. They exchange a knowing look as there is a knock on the door.

"I'll get it!" A young woman called over to them, she looked like Roisin, but with Hubun ears. The young woman opened the door, to see a dragon that now stood at a similar height to her. "Ruby?" The girl asked.

"Hello, Clara" Ruby smiled. "Can I come in?" She asked.

"Yeah, of course" Clara smiled, as she let Ruby in, before closing the door.

"Hello, old timers" Ruby chuckled as she approached Dex and Roisin.

"Ruby, good to see you" Roisin smiled. "Sorry to call you out so late" She added.

"It's no trouble" Ruby nodded. "It's always good to see you two" She smiled.

"Clara, come sit down, we have something to say" Dex called over to the young woman. Clara made her way over to a cosy chair in the corner and sat down. Roisin turned to Clara.

"Clara, we know... about the powers, you have gained" Roisin began.

"Huh?" Clara raised her eyebrow.

"Well, not gained" Dex smiled as he corrected Roisin. "It's more fair to say, you've always had them" He added. "Ever since that day that me and Roisin relinquished our Crystalla powers, and move our here to the middle of nowhere" Dex explained.

"You... had these powers?" Clara asked.

"Yes, you're not alone in the world" Roisin sighed, before looking to Ruby, who was listening intently. "The day has come, for you to... fly from the nest, so to speak" She added. Clara shook her head.

"I want to stay here with you" Clara protested.

"You're 20 now, Clara, it's been nice, living out here together, but I want you to live for yourself now" Roisin explained.

"The powers you have, they... let you live for a long time" Dex tried to explain.

"I don't understand" Clara frowned, wiping away her tears.

"We're dying" Roisin sighed. "Every day we are getting weaker, we enjoyed a long and happy life and lived long enough to see you grow into the smart young woman you are today..." She sighed.

"...Dying?" Clara asked.

"I imagine we've got a good decade or so left in us" Dex added. "But we don't want you to waste your days looking after us. We can manage on our own, and you can always visit" He smiled.

"Ruby will take you to where there are others like you, to Aquala University, in Inchaya" Roisin explained.

"There's lots like you!" Ruby nodded.

"She'll also be your friend, for life" Dex grinned, as he looked at the Dragon, who he saw as his own daughter. "Ruby will never leave you, please... don't leave her either" He said, as a tear formed in his eye.

"We love you both so much, and we... we've always hoped you would explore the world together, you're both going to be able to live for such a long time in this new age of peace" Roisin explained.

"So live" Dex smiled softly. "Run fast, be free, enjoy everything that life has to offer, like me and Roisin did" He nodded.

"We were afraid, at first, we had sad times, but we also had each other" Roisin explained.

"I..." Clara began, as she wiped her tears away. "I think I understand" She added.

"This isn't goodbye" Roisin smiled. "It's the start of a journey. Your journey. Your story" She added, as Clara walked over to Roisin and hugged her.

"Make it one worth telling" Dex smiled, as Clara pulled him into a hug.

The next day, Clara and Ruby were outside the cabin, as Roisin and Dex came to see her off. Clara looked at the blue sky, as the cold crisp winter air flowed through the trees.

"Call us often, yeah?" Roisin chuckled.

"I will" Clara smiled.

"That goes for you too, Ruby" Dex teased.

"I'll try to remember" Ruby shrugged, as the others laughed. Clara took a final look at her parents.

"I love you both" Clara nodded.

"We love you too, Clara" Roisin nodded. "Life can be scary, unfair, at times it can feel like the odds are against you. But never let that get you down. You deserve all the good things in life. Clara, just remember, to be kind, to be happy, and be free" Roisin smiled.

"Do us proud" Dex nodded in agreement.

"I promise I will" Clara nodded, as she saddled onto Ruby's back.

"Goodbye, Clara" Roisin said, with a tear in her eyes.

"Goodbye, Mum, Dad" Clara's voice shook.

"We'll be back, sometime" Ruby smiled. "Until then, goodbye, Mum and Dad" Ruby nodded. Roisin and Dex waved as Ruby took a run before flying into the air with Clara on her back.

As the soared through the skies, Clara looked at the ground below, to see the beauty of Crystalla and all it had to offer.
